Historia
When Ned chases Anna and their six-year-old daughter from Alaska to Maine, the two go into hiding in a run-down motel on the coast. As his pursuit of Anna and their child moves from threatening to criminal, Ned begins to alter his wife's world in ways she never could have imagined. This double-edged and satisfying story features a strong female protagonist, a thrilling plot, and a creeping sense of the apocalyptic. Sweet Lamb of Heaven builds to a shattering ending with profound implications for its characters.

Her most untipical work
Revisado: 06-18-24
I supposed it might be more than a runaway story. Indeed it is more. You'll find a mind-numbing and oh so confusing exorcist thriller part at the end.
However not a bad novel. The mother-daughter relationship is sensitively described and 5/6 of the audiobook is more than enjoyable. The deep humorlessness is depressing, but all in all it is a sad story.
It is very hard to grow on the author's flat voice. I gave her a 2 because she even sung. Positive that Lydia usually isn't keen on reading her books herself.

What's wrong with this title, I wondered at the beginning. Typical Paterson situation with a boy searching for his new place in a rural world. Narration is pretty okay. After a few minutes I realized why this title has been ranked so low. The dogs in this story are TALKING. Quite surprising from a realistic author. I quickly left the audio alone.

Il libro dell'innocenza smarrita
Revisado: 05-05-20
Calmati, figliuolo mio!

Vincent is a bartender at the Hotel Caiette, a five-star lodging on the northernmost tip of Vancouver Island. On the night she meets Jonathan Alkaitis, a hooded figure scrawls a message on the lobby's glass wall: Why don’t you swallow broken glass. High above Manhattan, a greater crime is committed: Alkaitis's billion-dollar business is really nothing more than a game of smoke and mirrors.

A Ponzi ghost story
Revisado: 04-19-20
I've read all the available audiobooks of Emily. This one is superbe. But please don't take it as a sequel to 'Station 11'. It is closer to her previous works, more somber and meditative. Action is scarse and things run under the surface. I loved it even if the Ponzi part was really a bit too long. Narrator was OK.

Not a literary gem
Revisado: 10-12-18
I have been spoiled by a recent Daily Deal title, 'The Bloody Chamber'. Angela Carter's prose mesmerises me. In comparison everything is so down-to-earth, especially this one. This is not literature. It is a so-so story told like the author sits in a pub chit-chatting after the third round of ale. An absolutely unremarkable thing. If you want good sci-fi, I still recomend PKD or Bradbury.

Historia
In this deeply personal reflection, Pulitzer Prize-winning author Jhumpa Lahiri explores the art of the book jacket from the perspectives of both reader and writer. Probing the complex relationships between text and image, author and designer, and art and commerce, Lahiri delves into the role of the uniform; explains what book jackets and design have come to mean to her; and how, sometimes, "the covers become a part of me".

Where's the Italian version?
Revisado: 04-10-18
This is a pretty good essay on book covers. However, it was a bitter disappointment for me. I simply loved the bilingual edition of 'In Other Words' and even if I found at times painful Mrs. Lahiri's pronunciation, I enjoyed the original version very much. Here I find only the English translation.
I really recommend the editor to release Mrs. Lahiri's following writings bilingual. I think the author is pleased to narrate in Italian and there are many Italian or Italian-speaking fans (such as me) who want to listen the original text.

Charlie Gordon knows that he isn't very bright. At 32, he mops floors in a bakery and earns just enough to get by. Three evenings a week, he studies at a center for mentally challenged adults. They hope the operation and special medication will increase his intelligence, just as it has for the laboratory mouse, Algernon.

Patience Lost
Revisado: 01-30-18
I know this is a modern classic. And that narrator did a great job indeed. But after 1,5 hours of listening I skipped to the last track and did it done. Somehow the perspective to struggle myself through the mostly unprobable rise of Charlie's IQ seemed exhausting. And the pacing is also somehow old-fashioned and longish, whilst the degression comes too soon. I think the first and the last tracks are sufficient to get an outlook.
You know... I grow older and older and I must realise that everything written before the 90's get me bored. The only exception are the shorts of Bernard Malamud and iron curtain classics. I simply can not keep myself on the mood and I loose the focus. May it be the beginning of my degression report?

Historia

Revisado: 01-26-18
Vi spiego perché ho dato all'audio sole due stelline.
Buon proseguimento e coraggio!

May I rate it 0 from 5?
Revisado: 01-25-18
A very efficient tool, cleverly structured and actually practical. But the poor Finnish girl...
I met many Scandinavians with peculiar pronunciations. And I am still unable to comprehend why an intelligent human being can not make a distinction between sh and s. She says Finnis. She says dis instead osf dih. She says always Finnis. And this is only a sample of her immense buchering of Englis. First it made me laugh then angry and in the end I decided to return the title. It's idiotic to listen for six heavy hours. Maybe this narrator is not at all an intelligent human being. Just a being. What a shame!

In 1938 Maugham wrote, "Fact and fiction are so intermingled in my work that now, looking back on it, I can hardly distinguish one from the other." Maugham also wrote that most of his short stories were inspired by accounts he heard firsthand during his travels to the lonely outposts of the British Empire. In volume three of this series, we present all of the remaining short stories which Maugham published after World War I and which he subsequently caused to be republished in various collections.

The very shame of all narrators
Revisado: 11-02-17
Hear the very first story. The female voice is high-piched like a gay pig. And all along the audio this diamond of all actors keeps on voicing women like this. Quite hateful, it spoils all my pleasure gained by listening to these briliant stories. What a shame, Mr. Griffin!
