Asians in MN! I loved it. The vivid sounds of Northern Minnesota totally took me there, and I was hooked into the mystery.

Stunning and very real
Revisado: 02-28-23
The story is well done. Excellent mystery. The end is believable, totally believable, and doesn't unravel before it should.
Set in the upper Midwest, the accents and regional dialect were not overdone and the characters were not caricatures. Actually quite accurate, inclusion of Hmong and Nordic ethnic groups in the story makes me happy.
The music in the background was perfect, adding to the story but not distracting from it. The sounds of the northwoods, same. Both sound factors build up the story and do not distract or overwhelm the listener.
Well done, all around.

True to life, emotional story

Impressive meld of music and spoken word
Revisado: 01-19-23
This is a complex piece and tells a story I wish more of us would remember and learn from. So impressed with how the choices of music, lyrics, storytelling, and voices develop and play off each other, creating a more intensely emotional reaction in me than they would have a individual components.

Wonderful Storytelling

2020-06-23. Time of COVID-19. This story was exactly... EXACTLY... what I needed today. Thank you for the story and the narration, both. They took me out of this crazy, worry-filled time and reminded me what is magic in the world.

Historia
Melanie is a very special girl. Dr. Caldwell calls her "our little genius". Every morning, Melanie waits in her cell to be collected for class. When they come for her, Sergeant keeps his gun pointing at her while two of his people strap her into the wheelchair. She thinks they don't like her. She jokes that she won't bite, but they don't laugh. Melanie loves school. She loves learning about spelling and sums and the world outside the classroom and the children's cells. She tells her favorite teacher all the things she'll do when she grows up.

Wow. What a story!

Any additional comments?
This is a fascinating story. The characters are very interesting and complex and develop over the course of the story in a way that is natural and not forced. The setting is not of a genre I usually go for (post-apocalypse/"zombies"), but I'm glad I did. The zombie thing isn't trite, it's actually pretty cool sci-fi. And the ending. Wow. Wrapped up neatly and all, but totally not what I was expecting. It was excellent.
The narration was very nice! I'm glad I've found a new favorite narrator and author. Will be looking for more from them.

The overarching storyline of Magnus and WW2 along with the family's current romantic adventures made this a very interesting tale to listen to. I look forward to the next installment!

Encouragement with a chuckle
Revisado: 06-10-12
What did you love best about Use What You've Got, & Other Business Lessons I Learned from My Mom?
This is one of the few Audible books that I've listened to multiple times. The humor, the performance, and the story -- the underlying story and advice -- have gotten me through. From subsidized housing to the beginnings of an export management business in five years, while raising four kids by myself. On Friday I was offered a contract to represent a company from another state, the whole nine yards. Yep. And you know what? It was because I decided to do just what the book title states: Use What I've Got. I think I've listened to this book at least four times. I pull it out when I start getting disheartened, or having major doubts, or I want to disown my teenagers. ;o) Between the chuckles from the stories about Ms. Corcoran's raising or the twists and turns of the evolution of her business... it just shows how in the end you never know where it's all going to lead but if you give up too early, well, that'd just be a darn shame because look what she accomplished! And her voice, when she reads it... Hilarious!!! What a great voice! NYC through and through!
What does Barbara Corcoran bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
I am so glad SHE reads this book! She really brought the stories alive. It's almost like she's sitting there at the table, coffee cup in hand, telling the stories to you. Just a riot!
What insight do you think you’ll apply from Use What You've Got, & Other Business Lessons I Learned from My Mom?
I'd say there are a few insights I re-gain each time I listen to this audible book: For example, my kids will be fine. I've tried to teach them similar things all along, not unlike Ms. Corcoran's mom. If we can get through these teenage years without my having to kill them or at least ground them until they're 30 (and the first one is leaving in exactly 2 weeks for marine boot camp, so that's one down and three to go!) , we'll all be fine. Second, you do NOT have to be born with a silver spoon in your mouth to do SOMETHING for yourself. You just have figure out what you've already got to work with and keep at it, find the people who are going to support you and encourage you and learn from everyone you can, and then make incremental changes. And I'm doing that! I re-listen to this book more and more the closer I get to achieving my business goals!
Any additional comments?
And yet, this is not a handsy-holdsy, let's-all-sing-coom-bay-yah type of self-help book. Don't think that for a minute! It's very funny, great to put on for an afternoon of cleaning out that one room of the house you've been putting off... You can get through it and laugh and recharge your batteries with this book while you do. Thanks, Audible, because I never would've found this book or enjoyed it as much or as often otherwise!
