Historia
I have been standing on the side of life, watching it float by. I want to swim in the river. I want to feel the current. So writes Mamah Borthwick Cheney in her diary as she struggles to justify her clandestine love affair with Frank Lloyd Wright. Four years earlier, in 1903, Mamah and her husband, Edwin, had commissioned the renowned architect to design a new home for them. During the construction of the house, a powerful attraction developed between Mamah and Frank, and in time the lovers, each married with children, embarked on a course that would shock society....

FLW and his mistress…
Revisado: 03-02-23
I thought the book seemed light on ample detail of FLW’s upbringing, and the writing / narration was simple. I didn’t care for the narration that much, but found myself on an 8 hr road trip and looking to finish the story. Seemed to end abruptly… not much closure.

The author is clever, witty and perceptive, but I had a challenging time finishing this book...it seemed more like free flow of thought from the author that could have been condensed.

Great narration; content disturbing
Revisado: 08-16-17
I almost didn't finish listening to this book; the content and details were extremely graphic and upsetting. The story was engaging. Another example of the horrors of war and, sadly, pertinent in our world today.

Couldn't stand the narration
Revisado: 09-23-16
I got to chap3 and had to stop listening. The author's narration seemed breathy, too unnatural and like he was reading a long list. I couldn't bear listening. I was hoping it'd be a good listen.

Historia
Despite constant efforts to declutter your home, do papers still accumulate like snowdrifts and clothes pile up like a tangled mess of noodles?Japanese cleaning consultant Marie Kondo takes tidying to a whole new level, promising that if you properly simplify and organize your home once, you'll never have to do it again. Most methods advocate a room-by-room or little-by-little approach, which doom you to pick away at your piles of stuff forever.

Tidying Up
Revisado: 05-14-16
I wasn't impressed by the author's reaching attempt to push her obsessive need to 'tidy' and the marketing of it. I felt like this woman wrote this book to make money and feed her obsession. If she encourages people to dispose of so many material goods, she should have been more responsible to offer various organizations which would welcome the donations. I felt she had a wasteful attitude of 'out of sight, out of mind'.

Historia
In the winter of 1918, at the height of World War I, history's most lethal influenza virus erupted in an army camp in Kansas, moved east with American troops, then exploded, killing as many as 100 million people worldwide. It killed more people in 24 weeks than AIDS has killed in 24 years, more in a year than the Black Death killed in a century. But this was not the Middle Ages, and 1918 marked the first collision between modern science and epidemic disease.

This Great Influenza could have been condensed.
Revisado: 01-02-13
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
There was a LOT of statistical information shared in this audio book; way too much.
I stopped listening to it after SEVERAL hours and went to the library to get a condensed version, which summarized this audio book very well. Too many exact figures and repeat of those figures; it diluted the book.
The Great Influenza of 1918-19 WAS interesting and worthy of a book, but this audio book was way too detailed, and seemed to draw out information that could have been condensed.
What was most disappointing about John M. Barry’s story?
The most disappointing part of the story was the deluge of statistics...over and over. I started rolling my eyes as I listened.
What three words best describe Scott Brick’s voice?
Overly-dramatic; the tone seemed like it was meant to scare the listener about the Great Influenza...like a ghost story-teller. He tried too hard to bring a sober tone to the book. (that was more than 3 words, I know).
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
I would not see the movie; I'd go to the juvenile section of a library and read a condensed version of the great influenza. It's definitely worthy information.
Any additional comments?
If this book was offered in an abridged version, I'd recommend it over the unabrided.

Historia
Reporter Sam Kean reveals the periodic table as it’s never been seen before. Not only is it one of man's crowning scientific achievements, it's also a treasure trove of stories of passion, adventure, betrayal, and obsession. The infectious tales and astounding details in The Disappearing Spoon follow carbon, neon, silicon, and gold as they play out their parts in human history, finance, mythology, war, the arts, poison, and the lives of the (frequently) mad scientists who discovered them.

Lots of tales with the p. table!!
Revisado: 12-13-12
Would you consider the audio edition of The Disappearing Spoon to be better than the print version?
I've not read the hard-copy of this book, but the audio was great!
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Disappearing Spoon?
The detailed stories shared of the various scientists and their contributions to the p.table / science....so many!! The mad scientist who invented and utilized nerve gas and elements for war purposes; disgusting, but interesting.
Any additional comments?
Lots of information about just every element; the content got heavy near the end, and I started to tune out.
