Historia
When retired police detective Joe Heller is called in to investigate what might be Antarctica's first murder, he quickly discovers that winter at McMurdo Station comes with a unique set of challenges: darkness, isolation, and the eccentric behavior of the research facility's 157 inhabitants. But a difficult investigation turns much tougher when all communication with the outside world is suddenly cut off.

Ignore the negative reviews
Revisado: 04-08-25
I really liked this story. I’ve been having trouble finding a book I’d be interested in. This one broke that impasse. And I really enjoyed the delve into the protagonist’s thoughts. Some listeners found this unnecessary. I found it helpful to the story and the location of where it took place. I don’t think that many people realize that Antarctica though a part of this planet is really a separate world. A world we still don’t completely understand. This story helped me see the continent differently.
The mystery was satisfying and unexpected. The narrator was flawless. I would listen to other books he has preformed.

Not for me
Revisado: 02-17-25
Liked the narrator. Not the story.
The parts that included the dogs were well done. Those parts were minimal.
If you love romance novels this book is for you. A strange romance as well.
If you thought it was for dog lovers don’t get this book.

Revisado: 12-03-24
After our scorching summer this novella was a welcome relief. As always Johnson and Guidall did not disappoint. Walt and Henry equally as good with their wit balanced perfectly with the suspense. Please, please more flashback stories about these two characters.

Predictable & Boring
Revisado: 04-22-24
Would probably make it as a Hallmark Channel movie.
And I totally agree about all the “she said “, “he said”, “they said”, “the mailman said”, “the grocery clerk said”. Said, said, said………..!! Oi! The story was mediocre and annoying with every word “said” used.
Not once did I believe the premise. Poor choices made by characters. The adults should have known better.
Can’t return cuz it was a 2 fer. Don’t let the positive reviews fool you.
BTW I rarely leave bad reviews.

Historia
A mummified corpse, over half a century old, is found in the cellar of an abandoned building in a remote New Mexico ghost town. Corrie Swanson is assigned what seems to her a throwaway case: to ID the body and determine cause of death. She brings archaeologist Nora Kelly to excavate the body and lend her expertise to the investigation, and together they uncover something unexpected and shocking: the deceased apparently died in agony, in a fetal position, skin coming off in sheets, with a rictus of horror frozen on his face. Hidden on the corpse lies a 16th-century Spanish gold cross.

The Scorpions Tale
Revisado: 11-21-23
I’m really enjoying this Nora Kelly series. I like the historical background and settings.
Apparently this is a spin off of another book series. I like the female protagonists of these books. What I don’t appreciate is this Pendergast character swooping in at the last minute to save the day. Reminds me of the old school detective television shows of my youth. When the mystery was solved suddenly by pulling the solution out of their backside.
Are we to expect this Pendergast to show up to save our heroines in future books?
Seems like a lazy and unimaginative way to write.

Never knowing his parents, eleven-year-old Stewie Little and his brother have been raised on a farm by their older sister. Stewie steadfastly tends the chickens left by his beloved late grandmother. And every day Stewie goes door to door selling fresh eggs from his wagon—a routine with a surprise just around the corner. It’s his new customer, Marilyn. NOT stupid!
Revisado: 08-01-23
I’ve just finished reading the reviews on this book. I can’t understand why someone would give the book 1 star! And be so ignorant to say how “stupid “ a boy like Stevie could be because he didn’t understand the meaning of some words. I’m so angry. I thought the world had progressed past this impression of learning difficulties. Also how we handle grief in our own way.
I proudly give this book 5 stars for showing how someone can make it through to the other side of losing a person they love.
Grief is not particular about who it touches and how it touches them. Losing someone or something will happen to all of us someday. This book helped me understand that even more.

When Cara felt her teenaged children slipping away and saw an empty nest on the horizon, she decided the best way to fill that void was with dogs - lots of them - and so her foster journey began. In 2015, her Pennsylvania farm became a haven for Operation Paws for Homes. There were the nine puppies at once, which arrived with less than a day's notice; a heart-worm positive dog; a deeply traumatized stray pup from Iraq; and countless others who just needed a gentle touch and a warm place to sleep.

Historia
In 1969, Natalie Kusz and her family abandoned the city, packed up the car, and headed to Alaska. They ended up a hundred miles from Fairbanks in a dilapidated house surrounded by 258 acres of spruce, birch and willow - and no road. When the first winter came - with Mr. Kusz working in Prudhoe Bay, money running out, and temperatures 60 below - the Kusz family was living so close to disaster that the question was not when it would strike but whom.

A story of a fulfilling life
Revisado: 07-02-23
I love stories about the struggles of living in the wilderness. So different from my own life. But similar in that all lives have struggles and successes. It is just the surroundings that differ. But still the bravery and persistence to go on in the face of such hurdles and to love it in spite of it, is inspiring.
Barbara Caruso is magnificent. Ever since listening to her read Joan Didion’s The Year of Magical Thinking, I have looked for her name as narrator of books.
This was a good story.

The Demon Skin
Revisado: 06-21-23
Sometimes I listen to my audible books at bedtime. But the fast pace and excitement of this story hindered my sleep. But I listened during the day and finished in a day. Good story. I especially like the time frame of the books having grown up in the 60’s. The connection to the Vietnam war resurrected some sad feelings. It’s hard for younger people to understand what went on back then. The reminiscing by the two main characters brings to light how harrowing an experience they had. Hope there is more sequels to come.
