Historia
For some it’s an opportunity. For others it’s a moment to question their faith: In God, in science, in everything. Still others try to keep the world running in the face of absurdity and uncertainty. And then there are the billions looking to the sky and wondering how a thing that was always just there is now... something absolutely impossible.

Sheer talent...Saves the day.
Revisado: 05-06-25
Until I read the afterward, I was convinced that John Scalzi had lost a bet! In that afterward he described the premise of this story as ridiculous, and I agree. I was tempted early on to shift to another book, but the brilliance of Scalzi's writing and the talent of Wheton's narration made this book enjoyable, engaging, and fun! Scalzi wove intricate short stories around a goofy and impossible idea. Science fiction is a combination of cutting edge science and our ability to suspend disbelief. This story strains credulity to the point of breaking. If it were not for Scalzi's ability to create, weave, and present backstory, perspective, and human interest in such short glimpses into his character's lives, this book would not have worked. But it does. It really does!
Thanks Mr. Scalzi!

mediocre at best
Revisado: 01-16-25
The story is derivative, predictable, and without humor or engagement.
The narrator is bland. Very little vocal inflection and sounds much older than the early 39's that the character is supposed to be.

Historia
When Van Tudor returns to his childhood home, he inherits more than the family farm. His grandfather used to tell him fantastic stories of spacemen and monsters, princesses and galactic knights. Little did Van realize, the old man's tales were more than fiction; they were real. Hidden beneath the old barn, Van’s legacy is waiting: a starship, not of this world. With his combat AI, an android bird named Perry, Van takes his first steps into the wider galaxy. He soon finds that space is far busier and more dangerous than he could have ever conceived.

The story was a repetition of a hundred other sci-fi and fantasy novels, character development was shallow, and the narrator's voice was right out of a 40's noir detective film. Somehow those issues combined into a tolerable listen. But I won't be following this author or narrator on the future

Historia
This near-future trilogy is the first chance for English-speaking listeners to experience this multiple-award-winning phenomenon from Cixin Liu, China's most beloved science fiction author. In The Dark Forest, Earth is reeling from the revelation of a coming alien invasion - in just four centuries' time. The aliens' human collaborators may have been defeated, but the presence of the sophons, the subatomic particles that allow Trisolaris instant access to all human information, means that Earth's defense plans are totally exposed to the enemy.

grinding and slow...
Revisado: 07-14-23
I struggled to finish this. there are good parts, but they are surrounded by overly detailed, vague sections.
the change in narrator killed this sequel. Luke Daniel's was able to make the slow sections worth listening to. The current narrator has trouble with pacing, inflection, and audibly separating the voices of his characters.
I will look forward to the upcoming series on Netflix for the rest of the story... Not worth the listen...

Amateurish
Revisado: 06-25-21
Poorly written books can be saved by really good narration. This audiobook had neither. There is potential for a good story here, but the writing was repetitive and predictable, the characters were 2 dimensional, and the history of this universe needed a bit more development.
The narration was monotone. I almost turned it off after 5 minutes, but stuck it out for about 5 chapters. The Scottish accent sounded like a lethargic James Doohan, women's voices were falsetto, and the main character came off as a macho monolith.
Save yourself some time and a credit!

I made it about a minute into the second chapter before I had to shut it off. Once he attempted to imitate an alien voice, it was over.
I can't say anything about the author or the story because I didn't get that far...

A River Runs Through It is a universal story of family love and a lyrical masterpiece, as beautiful as the great trout rivers of western Montana upon which it is set. Its beauty is especially evident through the "near-perfect match" of reader Ivan Doig and author Norman MacLean.

Very worth the listen, but truthfully, one of the few times that I have actually enjoyed a movie more than the book it is based on.
