Historia
In the summer of 1846, the Army of the West marched through Santa Fe, en route to invade and occupy the Western territories claimed by Mexico. Fueled by the new ideology of “Manifest Destiny,” this land grab would lead to a decades-long battle between the United States and the Navajos, the fiercely resistant rulers of a huge swath of mountainous desert wilderness.

The story is true. The mystery is mysterious. The characters, all dead now, are alive and vibrant. The writing is firstrate. The narrator is top shelf.

Historia
With her marriage prospects limited, teenage Varina Howell agrees to wed the much-older widower Jefferson Davis, with whom she expects a life of security as a landowner. He instead pursues a career in politics and is eventually appointed president of the Confederacy, placing Varina at the white-hot center of one of the darkest moments in American history - culpable regardless of her intentions. The Confederacy falling, her marriage in tatters, and the country divided, Varina and her children escape Richmond and travel south on their own, now fugitives.

An Epic, Uniquely American Tragedy in the Best Hands Imaginable
Revisado: 11-13-24
As to narration, it is hard to imagine a more perfect reading of this great American tragedy. As to the author, Charles Frazier is among the best storytellers in America, today or any day. It is hard to overstate his contributions but, if we're not careful, it might be easy to overlook.
Varina is on par with Cold Mountain as an epic, beautiful, brutal tale of love, loss, and life in the most tragic period and place in American history.

Working with the full cooperation of the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, Steven Naifeh and Gregory White Smith have accessed a wealth of previously untapped materials. While drawing liberally from the artist's famously eloquent letters, they have also delved into hundreds of unpublished family correspondences, illuminating with poignancy the wanderings of Van Gogh's troubled, restless soul. Naifeh and Smith bring a crucial understanding to the larger-than-life mythology of this great artist.

I tried but couldn't
Revisado: 01-16-24
The narration sounds like a frat boy attempting depth, insight, and vulnerability. Like the story, it feels condescending and smug. Here is a dude born to privilege, going on a journey of self-discovery on the budget privilege provides.
I feel for him in the loss of his father. I lost mine when I was 30 and he was 51. That is where my ability to empathize and commune ends.
I feel like this was one of those rare times a book was a complete waste of time.

Historia
On January 28, 1742, a ramshackle vessel of patched-together wood and cloth washed up on the coast of Brazil. Inside were thirty emaciated men, barely alive, and they had an extraordinary tale to tell. They were survivors of His Majesty’s Ship the Wager, a British vessel that had left England in 1740 on a secret mission during an imperial war with Spain. While the Wager had been chasing a Spanish treasure-filled galleon known as “the prize of all the oceans,” it had wrecked on a desolate island off the coast of Patagonia.

Incredible Story, Fantastic Writing!
Revisado: 12-19-23
This is a harrowing story of hardship, friendship, sunken ships, survival, betrayal, and the high cost imperial aspirations. Few stories of human endurance and suffering are its match. And the writing is first-rate.

Revisado: 10-21-23
I didn't knw this story of treachery and horror. Now I do and in vivid detail because of the exhaustive investigative work done by the author.
The reading by Will Patton, as always, was great. The other two narrators were ok.

Historia
The Sound and the Fury is the tragedy of the Compson family, featuring some of the most memorable characters in literature: beautiful, rebellious Caddy; the manchild Benjy; haunted, neurotic Quentin; Jason, the brutal cynic; and Dilsey, their black servant. Their lives fragmented and harrowed by history and legacy, the character’s voices and actions mesh to create what is arguably Faulkner’s masterpiece and one of the greatest novels of the twentieth century.

Great Presentation of an Unsatisfying Story
Revisado: 09-07-23
The narration was exquisite. The narrator gave life and personality to each character. The book itself, while written by a legendary American writer, felt like a story that spun on itself and got nowhere but occasionally managed to intrigue or entertain. I was ready to be done with it when it was done

Historia
We have a glut of text and trade books on American history. But what we don’t have is a compact, inexpensive, and authoritative book that will offer to American citizens a clear, informative, and inspiring narrative account of their own country. Such an account can shape and deepen their sense of the land they inhabit and, by making them understand that land’s roots, and share in its memories, equip them for the privileges and responsibilities of citizenship in American society.
