Star Trek ÷ X-men HAL

I love the way he mixes pop sci fi tropes into an engaging conflicted and hopeful story. Its like he took the best of Star Trek, X-men like heros, and scary but maybe ultimately benevolent HAL together.

The characters are great, You really feel like you know them, the narration is excellent.

I have re listened to this series several times already.

not for multi-tasking listen

I really couldn't get into this at first. its written like its from 1920s and narration sounds like it to. You really need to sit down and listen and pay attention. Not for listening while walking or something.

Philosophy, politics, religion are themes.Like another reviewer said, science fiction meets Canterbury Tales is exactly this. It feels very academic and cryptic somehow.

The ending left everything completely unresolved, either that, or I don't get it.

All that said, the characters stories are rich and unique and thought provoking. It wasn't a waste of time, but its hard to say it was a good time.

I first listened to this on a summer vacation a few years ago. the characters stick with me so much that I crave listening to it this summer.

its not so much about the story but about how the characters work together to help each other get over strife

unique easy hard science fiction

Unique premise. I really could relate to Maribel, I had very similar type of relationships and challenges working in academia. I think it is probably the main reason I love this book.

There is enough good science but it is not brain teasing its easy.

I was blown away by Children of Time, very unique, very inspiring and profound. I was hoping this would have something unique like that.. This one is just another robot apocalypse. I felt like it could have been meant to be in the silly realm of Douglas Adam's but it gets kind of too serious sometimes.

Storytelling is still okay, and the characters are well defined. Its just the ending while hopeful is underwhelming for me.

Narration was actually great, especially since I usually prefer American accents.

I can listen this audiobooks from this author over and over, they make me feel good. Hope for humanity and very light and fun with just a enough seriousness to give them substance.

It's perfect science fiction.

The best of of science fiction to me, is serious but somehow hopeful. The horror and weirdness is very much tamed. There is enough hard science but not so hard that you need to stop and rewind it to think about it a minute. You ponder things over with the characters you philosophize with them, it really quite brilliant. Its not force fed to you like some hard science fiction. The banter is quite good and characters develop brilliantly. There is a great deal of humor in it. All the characters have their funny moments.

I would say if you like audiobooks like Galaxy Outlaws, or Expeditionary Force, this one feels very much like those to me. But its somehow even better for me, because the characters are so crazy good.

It seems like the author complains in his notes about how hard character development is. He does characters really really well. I mean crazy good. And its all the characters they are ALL really good.

And the narrator, I had to stop and look up the narrator because I didn't believe there wasn't a cast for this. The accents, so believable to me, I live in a multinational city and have herd them all.

I could almost love it

The virtual voice was so nasal and tinny, and said things with wrong types of tones. I can't get over how it said "how toes" for how to.

I really liked the main character and appreciated her journey. She seems to perseve through inertia at times, but her thoughtful introspection makes it admirable and inspiring.

the ending felt a but ubrupt and unsatisfying

I struggled how characters are forced things by others for their own good. The good sci fi start, ends in ridiculous fantasy. the vitual naration was a bit "metallic sounding", buy was surprisingly easy to get used to.

If you like Star Trek The Next Generation..

It could easily fall in that genre, it can be a spinoff, it has the same notes, exploration, interacting and negotiating with new species, human droids, moral judgements.. but with a some humor.
