Historia
William S. Burroughs’ fiction and essays are legendary—but his influence on music’s counterculture has been less well-documented until now. Examining how one of America’s most controversial literary figures altered the destinies of many notable and varied musicians, William S. Burroughs and the Cult of Rock ‘n’ Roll reveals the transformations in music history that can be traced to Burroughs. The stories of Burroughs’ backstage impact will transform the way you see America’s cultural revolution and the way you hear its music.

William Burroughs was a heck of an influencer
Revisado: 03-01-23
I knew a little bit about William Burroughs before I listened to this audiobook. I knew he was famous for legitimate literary reasons, but I had no idea how broad his impact was on musicians and artists generations younger than him. This deep dive was so interesting and I enjoyed how the author filled in with biographical information about some of those artists who were so impacted by Burroughs' work and their personal relationships with him, including David Bowie, Patti Smith and Lou Reed. I found the occult stuff especially fascinating.
I really enjoy the work of this particular narrator. Very pleasant listening.

Historia
In his book-length essay Spirituality and the Writer, Larson surveys the literary insights of authors old and new who have shaped religious autobiography and spiritual memoir - from Augustine to Thomas Merton, from Peter Matthiessen to Cheryl Strayed. He holds them to an exacting standard: They must render transcendent experience in the writing itself.

Fascinating deep dive into writers of spirit
Revisado: 01-04-23
This thoughtful and insightful book was a treat. Some of the authors profiled are writers I have particularly enjoyed over the years, and I appreciated learning more about how deeply their spiritual journeys and outlooks informed their work. A wonderful companion piece to the works of any of the authors addressed within the book. Excellent narration! This narrator's warm and even style was a great match with the material.

Historia
The British Legion was one of the most remarkable regiments, not only of the American Revolution, but of any war. A corps made up of American Loyalists, it saw its first action in New York and then engaged in almost every battle in the Southern colonies. Relying on firsthand accounts - letters, diaries, and journals - War at Saber Point: Banastre Tarleton and the British Legion is the enthralling story of those forgotten Americans and the young Englishman who led them.

A must read for Revolutionary War buffs
Revisado: 12-23-21
Fascinating deep dive into aspects of the war that were totally new to me. The intricacies of the conflict between the British and their loyalists and the patriots, especially in the Carolinas, are highlighted in very listenable yet scholarly narrative. Outstanding narrator!

Historia
France, 1942: While war blazes at the front lines of Europe, in the walled southern city of Carcassonne, nestled deep in the Pyrenees, a group of courageous women is engaged in an equally lethal battle. Like their ancestors who fought northern invaders 700 years before, these members of the French Resistance - code-named Citadel - fight to liberate their home from the Nazis. Led by a daring 18-year-old, Sandrine Vidal, and her elder sister, Marianne, the women of Citadel work quickly to sabotage their German occupiers, safeguard their neighbors and smuggle refugees over the mountains into neutral territory.

Wanted to like it. It just made me mad.
Revisado: 04-13-19
I really wanted to like this book. WWII French Resistance, mystical codex, heroic women--what's not to love? This book only annoyed me the further I got into it, but I just didn't want to give up. I've had a similar reaction to other Kate Mosse books. This will be my last go at her work. The main character starts out as a naive teenager and, suddenly, fast forward two years and she's a savvy ringleader of a resistance cell. Wait, what? The author doesn't bother to take us through this significant personal growth. We're just supposed to believe it. Also, if repeated intense scenes of Nazis torturing people for information and punching women in the face isn't your bag, skip this book.

Historia
After disgracing themselves at a high society New Year's Eve party in Philadelphia in 1944, Madeline Hyde and her husband, Ellis, are cut off financially by his father, a former army colonel who is already ashamed of his son’s inability to serve in the war. Ellis and his best friend, Hank, decide that the only way to regain the colonel's favor is to succeed where the colonel very publicly failed - by hunting down the famous Loch Ness monster.

Not worth the time
Revisado: 08-20-15
Is there anything you would change about this book?
The action revolved for so much of the time around three very unlikable characters. Two men who had no redeeming qualities, and a female protagonist who shlumped her way through the story. I didn't root for her at all. The whole story reminded me of a poor quality paperback romance novel. Just lame.
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
Given it to a different writer.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
I will definitely avoid this narrator in the future. She has some odd nasally quirks that I think come from poor breath support and, though I recognize this can't be easy, her male voices are awful. They all sound the same. BIG annoyance with this book, however, was her horrible depiction of Scottish accents. I think she accidentally took a brief listen to an Irish accent and then just threw the whole thing to the wind. TERRIBLE! Do the research, narrator! The book takes place in Scotland, Scotland, Scotland.
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
No. Characters were so unlikable.
Any additional comments?
This is the first time I've left a negative review for an audiobook. I listen to a lot of them, so I have to feel really strongly to speak up. The setting is what attracted me. I disliked Water for Elephants tremendously, so I shouldn't have bothered with this author. I know others will greatly disagree, but this is just poor quality literature.
