Beautiful and compelling story!
Revisado: 08-14-18
Lovingly told, this talented young author unflinchingly tells a tale of love and tragedy set against a compelling historical tableau. The characters are real and human, flawed yet loveable, relatable in their shortcomings and inspiring in their growth. There is action aplenty but the pacing is fair, giving the reader plenty of time to absorb the generous lessons and metaphors. The prose is sweeping and poetic, the imagry rich and lush. Highly, highly recommended. If you love good books you will love this story!

Narrator ruins it for me
Revisado: 05-10-16
Is there anything you would change about this book?
The narrator is just wrong for this story. His performance is all off, and to top it off, he never seems to get excited about the story. If he disliked the story so much, why would he narrate it!
What didn’t you like about Lloyd James’s performance?
He has a weak, nasally, east coast accent that is entirely wrong for all of the tough roughneck space marine characters. Furthermore, he has an odd cadence, pausing in the middle of sentences and making it tough to follow the narrative flow. And despite the odd cadence, he has a low-energy, droning quality to his voice that makes one feel sleepy, even during the action scenes.
Any additional comments?
Classic novel ruined by a poorly matched narrator!

Historia
Told for the first time, here is the story of a stray dog who eventually became affectionately known as Sergeant Stubby, the most famous war dog of World War I. Beloved award-winning children's author Ann Bausum brings her friendly writing style and in-depth research to her first book for adults. Stubby's story begins in 1917 when America is about to enter the war. A stray dog befriends Private J. Robert "Bob" Conroy at the Connecticut National Guard camp at Yale University, and the two become inseparable, eventually crossing an ocean and going to war together.

Amazing historical story ruined by campy narration
Revisado: 03-31-16
What disappointed you about Sergeant Stubby?
The narrator was distracting, using entirely the wrong tone for the serious topic. Also, the writing was rather puerile. Multiple times the author over-sized the word "literally," and the narrator's obvious amusement over the weak-but-oft-repeated joke was infuriating. Yes, it's a story about WWI, we know that they are "literally" in the trenches. It's not funny. And with hundreds of thousands of people dead, it's not an appropriate joke either.
What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?
The foreword, written by the grandson of Sgt Stubby's owner, who is himself a veteran suffering from PTSD, was probably the best part. Heart wrenching, personal, vulnerable, uplifting, and warm. That section also had a better narrator. Wish that guy had done the whole story.
What didn’t you like about Pam Ward’s performance?
She used a light, jovial, almost sing-song tone, entirely inappropriate for a story about a war. She almost sounded happy, like she was telling a joke, when reciting gruesome casualty numbers. It was highly distracting and occasionally infuriating.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Bitter disappointment.
Any additional comments?
I was really looking forward to this story. I loved the foreword. I barely made it through the main narration.

Historia
Chances are you've been there before: On an awkward first date where you find yourself stuck playing 20 questions with a person who has broccoli stuck in their teeth, or the one who shows up so on-the-rocks wasted that they end up passed out in their bowl of clam chowder before the main course arrives. All My Friends Are Engaged is a collection of dating disaster stories, packed with witty and relatable answers to the age-old annoying question of "Why are you still single?"

Just not very good.
Revisado: 02-19-16
I tried to finish this book, I really did. I came back to it a half dozen times. But I could never listen to more than 15 minutes at a time. The stories are inane and often disgusting. The writing is cringe worthy, full of ridiculous similes and analogies, inapplicable adjectives, and distracting non sequiturs. It reads like the kind of thing a 10th grader who thinks she's good at writing (but isn't) would post on her 'creative' blog. And worst of all, I could never get invested in the main character. Oh, you're a young, healthy, pretty, rich, white girl? Your life is so hard! So sad for you!

Historia
Requiem for Battleship Yamato is Yoshida Mitsuru's story of his own experience as a junior naval officer aboard the fabled Japanese battleship as it set out on a last, desperate sortie in April 1945. Yoshida was on the bridge during Yamato's fatal encounter with American airplanes, and his eloquent, moving account of that battle makes a singular contribution to the literature of the Pacific war. The book has long been considered a classic in both Japan and the United States.

Simply amazing. One of a kind.

Poetic and philosophical, this is an amazing and beautiful memoir of a very unique moment in history. Truly one of a kind. The narrator is very good too, capturing the spirit of the text and precisely conveying the atmosphere of this thoughtful work.

Annoying narrator
Revisado: 12-07-15
Would you try another book from Andrew Chaikin and/or Bronson Pinchot?
Narrator has a very odd cadence, pausing at strange times, pushing words together at others, pausing for breath in the middle of sentences or phrases, often ending sentences on up-notes instead of down-notes. It's actually distracting me from the story. I would be inclined to avoid stories from this narrator in the future.
