Climate Denying BS
Revisado: 03-14-25
Crichton creates a story where climate scientists are secretly in league to manufacture fake global warming data in order to keep the grant funds flowing. The vast conspiracy is willing to lie, kill, and generally operates like a James Bond villain. The book may appeal to folks looking to escape the inescapable truth of climate change.

Scattered and clunky. Newcomers to climate issues should start somewhere else. This book is poorly organized and hard to navigate.

Historia
As he did so masterfully in The Jungle, Pulitzer Prize-winning author Upton Sinclair interweaves social criticism with human tragedy to create an unforgettable portrait of Southern California's early oil industry. Enraged by the oil scandals of the Harding administration in the 1920s, Sinclair tells a gripping tale of avarice, corruption, and class warfare, featuring a cavalcade of characters, including senators, oil magnates, Hollywood film starlets, and a crusading evangelist.

Great read
Revisado: 01-28-25
Sinclair does a nice job reflecting the early days of the oil industry, the small drillers, the workers and society in the early 20th century. Particularly interesting for those interested in fossil fuels and labor unions.
The narrative reading is terrific.

Historia
A thirty-four-year-old American woman—a secret agent—is sent to do dirty work in France. “Sadie Smith” is how the narrator introduces herself to her lover, to the rural commune of French subversives on whom she is keeping tabs, and to the reader. Sadie has met her love, Lucien, a young and well-born Parisian, by “cold bump”—making him believe the encounter was accidental. Like everyone Sadie targets, Lucien is useful to her and used by her. Sadie operates by strategy and dissimulation, based on what her “contacts”—shadowy figures in business and government—instruct.

I Don’t Get the Hype
Revisado: 10-01-24
I don’t know what to make of this book. I made it a quarter of the way through and found myself dreading the chore of picking it up again. The monologue of an uninteresting young woman tramping around France while bleating endlessly about Neanderthals, or something. Am I missing something? Why do people like this book?

Historia
The messages waiting for Henry Pierce when he plugs in his new phone clearly aren't intended for him. They indicate something has gone terribly wrong for a woman named Lilly. Pierce probes, investigates, and then tumbles through a hole, leaving behind a life driven by work to track down and help a woman he's never met. Connelly's latest is "a grabber from the beginning...utterly compelling."

Not Connelly’s Best
Revisado: 05-09-24
Not interesting. Moronic protagonist is boring and off-putting. Each scene drones on and on. The book could literally be edited by 50% and still would seem unbearable. Thank goodness the author got better at his craft. The narrator is bad enough to give you a headache.

Historia
In 1714, England's Parliament offered a huge reward to anyone whose method of measuring longitude could be proven successful. The scientific establishment--from Galileo to Sir Isaac Newton--had mapped the heavens in its certainty of a celestial answer. In stark contrast, one man, John Harrison, dared to imagine a mechanical solution--a clock that would keep precise time at sea, something no clock had been able to do on land. And the race was on....
