Written with the austere clarity that has made J. M. Historia
All too often, this brilliant novel of thwarted love and revenge miscarried has been read for its political implications. Now, a quarter century after The Joke was first published and several years after the collapse of the Soviet-imposed Czechoslovak regime, it becomes easier to put such implications into perspective in favor of valuing the book (and all Kundera 's work) as what it truly is: great, stirring literature that sheds new light on the eternal themes of human existence.

Another depressing Russian type novel
Revisado: 02-15-20
At least I could listen to this while walking my dogs instead of forcing myself to spend precious time reading it.
Story is circular, sort of predictable and the main character is a pathetic narcissist. Book is misogynistic and most of the men are weak. So all in all it deals with the underbelly of mankind. No bright spot, none of the characters are likable . I wish I had not had to even pick this book up but I completed it because of a commitment to my book club .

DEPRESSION IN AND OUT!!
Revisado: 01-01-17
Where does The Noonday Demon rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
Very Very good although Andrew Solomon's voice can be a bit shrill. He has lived in the valley of severe depression and does an excellent job of both sharing his experiences, interviewing others, making some very good points and has done quite a bit of research both on current and past treatments modalities and the history of depression. I am a Psychotherapist in private practice for over 30 years and also struggled with my own severe depressions at times. I felt joined by him and hope that other's who are struggling or know someone struggling will feel some hope.

Historia
Philip Roth presents a vivid portrait of an innocent man being swept away by a current of conflict and violence in his own backyard - a story that is as much about loving America as it is hating it. Seymour "Swede" Levov, a legendary high school athlete, a devoted family man, a hard worker, and the prosperous heir of his father's Newark glove factory comes of age in thriving, triumphant postwar America. But everything he loves is lost when the country begins to run amok in the turbulent 1960s. Not even a most private, well-intentioned citizen, it seems, gets to sidestep the sweep of history. American Pastoral is the story of a fortunate American's rise and fall ... a strong, confident man, a master of social equilibrium, overwhelmed by the forces of social disorder. For the Swede is not allowed to stay forever blissful living out life in rural Old Rimrock in his 170 year-old stone farmhouse with his pretty wife (his college sweetheart and Miss New Jersey of 1949) and his lively albeit precocious daughter, the apple of his eye ... that is until she grows up to become a revolutionary terrorist.

Where does American Pastoral rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
Loved the story and the reader who even reads with a heavy New York accent. Very entertaining and funny yet sad. A lot of emotions about relationships particularly about family
What does Ron Silver bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
He is a fabulous reader. I have listened to every Phillip Roth book he has read and been totally engaged.

Historia
Before Liz Lemon, before Weekend Update, before Sarah Palin, Tina Fey was just a young girl with a dream: A recurring stress dream that she was being chased through a local airport by her middle-school gym teacher. She also had a dream that one day she would be a comedian on TV. She has seen both these dreams come true. At last, Tina Fey's story can be told. From her youthful days as a vicious nerd to her tour of duty on Saturday Night Live. Tina Fey reveals all, and proves what we've always suspected: You're no one until someone calls you bossy.

Very Funny laugh your head off in certain moments.
Revisado: 05-28-11
Parts of this made me laugh out loud and parts of it were boring. Overall I would recommend it to those of us who are looking for a light distraction from the angst and grind of our daily lives. Even my 19 year old son enjoyed listening to this and actually said he wants to "read the book in print" ( He doesn't read many books). It is anti-intellectual which is also a relief.
