Historia
In the six lectures of The Great Gatsby at 100, you will join Sheila Liming of Champlain College to revisit the context and culture of the Roaring ‘20s, which inspired the story of the mysterious Jay Gatsby and his disastrous pursuit of Daisy Buchanan. As you’ll discover, while Gatsby is framed as a love story, it’s also a story of the American experience, revealing the unspoken rules of wealth and class and the false promises of self-made success in a world of Old Money privilege.

Hard to enjoy
Revisado: 04-27-25
The Great Gatsby is in my list of top 10 novels. I love it. This lecture would have been SO much better had it not been read by its writer. Her enunciation was so strange and uneven. Every time she said the name Myrtle, I cringed. I would love to find it in written form so I can enjoy it thoroughly.

Awful
Revisado: 03-14-25
I can't believe James Patterson wrote this. The story was so formulaic. The voice actors were so over the top I found myself laughing and rolling my eyes. Don't waste your time listening to this.

Historia
The year was 1917. As a war raged across the world, young American women flocked to work, painting watches, clocks, and military dials with a special luminous substance made from radium. It was a fun job, lucrative and glamorous - the girls themselves shone brightly in the dark, covered head to toe in the dust from the paint. They were the radium girls. As the years passed, the women began to suffer from mysterious and crippling illnesses.

I had NO idea about these women!
Revisado: 05-18-24
I thought I knew a bit of obscure history, but this bit of manufacturing history was a huge shock. What these young women went through was shocking and the lying, deception, and conspiring done by the factory owners was infuriating. I cannot imagine the level of pain and suffering they endured.
as many others have said, the narration was not great. I don't care for overly dramatic narration where each character is done in a different voice, so that aspect of Ms. Brazil's reading didn't bother me. but she read much too slowly and sounded like an AI voice. So, I too had to speed it up to 1.25x.

Historia
Ex-military policeman Jack Reacher is a drifter. He’s just passing through Margrave, Georgia, and in less than an hour, he’s arrested for murder. Not much of a welcome. All Reacher knows is that he didn’t kill anybody. At least not here. Not lately. But he doesn’t stand a chance of convincing anyone. Not in Margrave, Georgia. Not a chance in hell.

Great story, narration not so much
Revisado: 01-08-24
I came to this book from the Reacher Amazon Prime series. it seems the series stays pretty true to the book. That being said, the narration was very distracting and too slow. If I increased the speed, it didn't help. I will not get any more books in this series with the same narrator. I'd rather read the printed book.

Revisado: 01-27-23
As much as I love The Witcher Netflix series, the book just feels disjointed and the narrative forces. I am guessing it is not easily translated. all I know is this was a huge chore to get through and I won't be reading anything else in the series.

Fascinating
Revisado: 01-18-23
I was totally immersed in this story. My paternal side of the family is from Skibbereen, so I thoroughly enjoyed all the accents and descriptions of the country.
My opinion of "did he or didn't he" went back and forth, and I truly don't know what to think.
It's a long haul, but I wholeheartedly recommend 'West Cork'!

Revisado: 01-12-23
For some reason the app won't let me give one star for Overall and Story. The narrator was excellent, however. I struggled through 2 chapters. I couldn't get into the story or characters. I hope I'm able to return it.

Distracting narration
Revisado: 04-10-22
I enjoyed the story itself, but the narration was a complete distraction, especially when she was voicing the men. Sometimes sounding ridiculously gruff, sometimes slobbering.

Narration was the worst!
Revisado: 04-13-21
I don't know how I made it through, actually. I watched the Netflix series and wanted to read the actual story. I don't know who Ms Landon is, but she shouldn't be narrating anything. I think I will find the book and read it for myself. Hopefully it will cleanse my brain from this experience.
