I found out about Tanith Lee in light of the Neil Gaiman fiasco, and everyone said he clearly stole Sandman from her so I thought to myself I simply must read the real deal. Having now done so, I'm skeptical that this was indeed theft but honestly that's rather burying the lead, which is to say absolutely no one mentioned at all how obsessed with white white white fair skinned pale white white pale Tanith was. Nor mentioned that the two explicitly mentioned Black people are both villains and also physically hideous, and one is the physical embodiment of the evil that will destroy the world. He is literally just huge amorphous Black Male Lips. I wish someone had mentioned this at any point so I could have avoided giving any money at all to Tanith Lee's estate.

This was advertised to me in the KJ Charles discord for being a low stakes low stress historian MM and it is exactly that. It was really just very soft and cute, good escapism (except that one of the lads had all my wife's least kind qualities as well, which was jarring but more of a personal note than a genuine review lmao)

Narrator was often unsure who was speaking, and would catch on only after the "X said" bits, then he would correct his accent for the rest of the dialogue which is very jarring as the one he messed up most often was the one with a very thick Irish accent. It really felt like the narrator did not care at all, or couldn't be bothered to realize through conversational context clues who was speaking, which threw me out a lot. it just seemed unprofessional, which is unfortunate because he did swimmingly otherwise and was incredibly enjoyable to listen to.

The story was alright, not as good as the first, but not as high stakes stress either. Just a much calmer more even keel flow, nothing particularly to write home about but if you're looking for a minimal stress romance with blisteringly hot bedroom scenes you have absolutely found it. I'll certainly read it at least twice more I am sure.

I know a lot of people hated the narrator voice, and they should, she sounded like Roxi Hart from Chicago but with jowls, but I wish someone would have said that the killer Did It bc "they're a crazy loony bipolar, that's why." Turned me off the whole book. Also the disabled woman with the husband who wants kids more than he cares about her being paralyzed ends up being a tradwife and pregnant in the end, which sat poorly on top the of the psycho bipolar killer angle.

just coming in here mid listen to bring up the fact that the narrator chose to make the LI inaudible more than half the time for some reason? this seems like a silly choice to me, given the importance of the role, and boy oh boy I feel I would enjoy this book a lot more if I could here what the love interest was saying

I am this books target audience. A lesbian bibliophile Titanic buff of French descent, I was so worried to start this book and so immediately relieved and joyed when I finally did. This book was exquisite and funny and charming and not at all what I anticipated when I opened, which I think I like it more for. Our main character tipped me off to the inaccuracies of my assumptions within the first hour (think: you had my curiosity, now you have my attention) after which I was happy to follow along after him for the next 9 hours of my life just to see what was next. I'm so pleasantly relieved by the consistency of this book, it's starts well, it remains interesting through the middle, and it sticks the landing, which is where one finds book usually fumble. So pleased with this, truly.

I feel other reviews tried but ultimately failed to warn or prepare one with their comments that this book is about wizards fucking, so I will now attempt to clear that up for you.

This book is *about* wizards fucking. wizards fucking is the plot of this book. How often did wizards fuck? WHO did wizards fuck? Who was the top or bottom in the wizards fucking arrangement? were the wizards into bondage? were the evil wizards fucking the cuck virgin kings? the POINT of this book is, in every way, wizards fucking. wizards fucking is what this book is about.

to be fair to this book, I will say that it only began to read as ridiculous when the author tries her level best to make the mating habits of wizards very serious and hotly debated by scholars and people in government, where it was very clear, at least to me, the author was desperately trying to convince the reader that wizards fucking wasn't silly and was in fact politically and emotionally interesting. (I personally do think wizards fucking is a wonderful subject, but the author relentlessly begging me to take it seriously made the whole thing cheap and annoying.)

do with this review what you will! happy hunting.
