Historia
In 1972, when workers in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, were digging the foundations for a new development, the last thing they expected to find was a skeleton at the bottom of a well. Who the skeleton was and how it got there were two of the long-held secrets kept by the residents of Chicken Hill, the dilapidated neighborhood where immigrant Jews and African Americans lived side by side and shared ambitions and sorrows. Chicken Hill was where Moshe and Chona Ludlow lived when Moshe integrated his theater and where Chona ran the Heaven & Earth Grocery Store.

In the aftermath of the 2020 presidential election, Donald Trump and many around him, including certain other elected Republican officials, intentionally breached their oath to the Constitution: they ignored the rulings of dozens of courts, plotted to overturn a lawful election, and provoked a violent attack on our Capitol.

While I am NO Cheney fan, I found this book inspired by respect for a woman who is clearly intelligent, hard working, clear eyed and brave, brave, brave. I really enjoyed it and I learned from it. Narration was excellent.

Historia
Winston Churchill is perhaps the most important political figure of the 20th century. His great oratory and leadership during the Second World War were only part of his huge breadth of experience and achievement. Studying his life is a fascinating way to imbibe the history of his era and gain insight into key events that have shaped our time.

Historia
This second volume in William Manchester's three-volume biography of Winston Churchill challenges the assumption that Churchill's finest hour was as a wartime leader. During the years 1932-1940, he was tested as few men are. Pursued by creditors (at one point he had to put up his home for sale), he remained solvent only by writing an extraordinary number of books and magazine articles.

Charming. Fascinating.
Revisado: 11-22-24
If you are interested in Scotland. If you want to just escape to an island. If you like to eat. If you like textiles. If you like animals. If you are interested in regenerative agriculture. If public policy impact on communities interests you. All, some, or any of the above. You will love this book. Beautiful written and gracefully narrated, the author traces her journey in support of one particular breed of sheep. She comes through as so human, smart, and accessible - her company is a delight. And I learned a huge amount about all of the above.

Historia
At a time when a lasting peace between the Palestinians and the Israelis seems unattainable, understanding the roots of their conflict is an essential step in restoring hope to the region. In The Iron Cage, Rashid Khalidi provides a lucid context for the realities on the ground today, a context that has been, until now, notably lacking in our discourse.

Valuable addition the canon
Revisado: 11-22-24
As can be expected of the eminent scholar, Rashid Khalidi - This is a really wonderful book that helps build some knowledge bridges between Dr. Khalidi's book on Palestinian Identify and the 100 Years War. His analysis, detail, and understanding is just fantastic and I have no hesitation recommending the book. However, had I to do it again, I would read it - not listen to the really, really awful narrator. His fast, monotone reading and consistent, almost laughable, mispronounciation of names has an odd combination of putting one to sleep and, at the same time, nails on chalkboard. It is an insult to the listener, subject matter, and author, that the narrator doesn't bother to figure out pronounciations. Ridiculous. And the editing is awful with the effect that the listerner can't tell as the narrator speedwalks them down hill, where one chapter ends or another beings.

Historia
Drawing on a wealth of untapped archival materials and the reports of generations of family members - mayors, judges, scholars, diplomats, and journalists - The Hundred Years' War on Palestine upends accepted interpretations of the conflict, which tend, at best, to describe a tragic clash between two peoples with claims to the same territory. Instead, Khalidi traces a hundred years of colonial war on the Palestinians, waged first by the Zionist movement and then Israel, but backed by Britain and the United States, the great powers of the age.

Superb book moderately narrated
Revisado: 11-22-24
Rashid Khalidi has researched and written a superb book and it is a great contribution to understanding Palestine, Israel, and the current state of play (lo these 100+ years). Professor Khalidi reads the introduction and I so much wish he had read the whole book. It is a mystery to me what a narrator for this would have been chosen who is unable to pronounce most of the place and people names - be they Palestinian or Israeli. In fact, in light of the sensitivity of the topic, it was rather insulting.
That said, I listened to it twice to get the facts down. Very, very good book on a topic that is important toyou whethe you know it or not.

Important memoir by an admirable young woman
Revisado: 11-07-23
This is an interesting memoir of a very important event that also offers insight into Ms Hutchinson’s very typical background - an extraordinary person emerging from an ordinary, but interesting, background. Her mother should be proud to have raised such a clear-eyed, brave person. She is so young - but her story should school a lot of much older people.

Historia
As Assistant Private Secretary to four monarchs, 'Tommy' Lascelles had a ringside seat from which to observe the workings of the royal household and Downing Street during the first half of the 20th century. These fascinating diaries begin with Edward VIII's abdication and end with George VI's death and his daughter Elizabeth's Coronation. In between we see George VI at work and play, a portrait more intimate than any other previously published.
