Historia
Structured in three parts, each recounting a new expedition, there are some long-awaited answers here, to be sure, but also more questions, and profound new surprises. Absolution is a brilliant, beautiful, and ever-terrifying plunge into unique and fertile literary territory. It is the final word on one of the most provocative and popular speculative fiction series of our time.

An homage to the immaculate and deadly natural world
Revisado: 12-20-24
The Southern Reach Trilogy has been in my top five since I read it. This fourth book is an excellent addition to the grotesque and beautiful landscape painted in the previous three parts. In this addition, the mystery of Area X is expanded upon creating a beautiful map of time and place. Excellent addition to the story of The Southern Reach and Vandermeer’s overall body of work.
(The narrator’s voice is wonderful- Pincho is always a great listen)

Historia
On his second combat tour, Nick Brokhausen served in Recon Team Habu, CCN. This unit was part of MACV-SOG (Military Assistance Command Vietnam Studies and Observations Group), or Studies and Observations Group as it was innocuously called. The small recon companies that were the center of its activities conducted some of the most dangerous missions of the war, infiltrating areas controlled by the North Vietnamese in Laos, Vietnam, and Cambodia. The companies never exceeded more than 30 Americans, yet they were the best source for the enemy's disposition.

A glimpse into a very unique experience
Revisado: 08-14-24
Overall beautifully and comically told. A part of The Vietnam War that I had not heard before. Speaks to the bonds of war across cultures from an honest perspective. I’ve read both memoirs and what was most striking is the way he reflects upon the purpose of war and it’s aftermath while still in country. A phenomenal telling of an important story.

Carolyn's not so different from the other human beings around her. After all, she was a normal American herself once. That was a long time ago, of course - before the time she calls "adoption day", when she and a dozen other children found themselves being raised by a man they learned to call Father.

hilarious and fantastical

Incredibly captivating plot with very well developed characters. If you are a fan of Christopher Moore’s Lamb this is right up your alley. The narrator does a great job of inhabiting the main character as well as bringing other characters to life. Metaphysics with snark. Thoroughly enjoyed this book!

Love the Lions Pod so wanted to check out Joe’s book. His storytelling ability didn’t disappoint. Talented writer, historian, and cynic. The narrator wasn’t so bad, just didn’t fit the narrative. Most other listeners seem annoyed, I wasn’t too distracted. Great book by a solid human.

Historia
Jennette McCurdy was six years old when she had her first acting audition. Her mother’s dream was for her only daughter to become a star, and Jennette would do anything to make her mother happy. So she went along with what Mom called “calorie restriction." She endured extensive at-home makeovers while Mom chided, “Your eyelashes are invisible, okay? You think Dakota Fanning doesn’t tint hers?” She was even showered by Mom until age sixteen while sharing her diaries, email, and all her income. In I’m Glad My Mom Died, Jennette recounts all this in unflinching detail.

If you have a inner child that is or was at some point haunted by a narcissistic caregiver, then this might be your version of a feel good read. It was for me. Additionally just an all around entertaining autobiography.

Historia
In March 2000, a suitcase arrived at a children's Holocaust education center in Tokyo, Japan. On the outside, in white paint, were these words: Hana Brady, May 16, 1931, and Waisenkind - the German word for orphan. Children who saw the suitcase on display were full of questions. Who was Hana Brady? What happened to her? They wanted Fumiko Ishioka, the center's curator, to find the answers.

Highly recommend for teachers
Revisado: 11-14-22
This is an amazing story connecting across time and the world. Heartbreaking and confronting, the reader views the ultimate evils of man through the eyes of a child. However equally full of hope for future generations of children who will benefit from this story of one little girl. Fantastic resource for earl childhood educators. Could easily be incorporated into curriculum on many subjects. Overall great addition to your library.

Audie Murphy was a desperately poor eighteen-year-old orphan when he joined the Army, nineteen when he first saw a buddy die from an enemy bullet and an enemy die from one of his own. By VE day, he had killed at least 240 Germans, had single-handedly destroyed a German tank in one battle and held off six tanks in another, and had become the most decorated soldier in American history, winning every medal his country offered, including the Congressional Medal of Honor.

WWII/bio buff must read
Revisado: 11-10-22
Fantastic biography of a period fixed in time and memory. Thoughtful, self aware and incredibly heartfelt account. Great for biography fans. Amazing for history buffs. Really well narrated. Reader gives depth in the moment incorporating various US dialects. Reading doesn’t seem contrived or corny. 100% recommend.

Enthralling and Poetic
Revisado: 07-06-22
This book is ironically truthful- the names and places may have changed but the grit and honesty of human emotion is present throughout. A fascinating read for those interested in spy craft or someone looking for an interesting memoir. The tagline for this book couldn’t be more succinctly put. Fox has artfully woven together the pivotal developmental milestones many of us experience, creating an incredibly relatable tapestry- then again most of us are not toiling away with finding the balance in our humanity while simultaneously being deep undercover.

Historia
At a remote little inn not far from the Kansas homestead of Laura Ingalls Wilder lived the Bender family. These pioneers welcomed unwary visitors with jackrabbit stew and a sledgehammer to the skull. In time, their apple orchard gave up its secrets - a burial ground for their mutilated victims, each stripped of their possessions. The devilish enterprise on “Hell’s Half-Acre” would earn the Bloody Benders an undying place in the annals of American infamy. But it was the mysterious fate of eldest daughter, Kate, that would make them the stuff of mythic campfire prairie tales.

Historia
Before Area X, there was Ambergris. Jeff VanderMeer conceived what would become his first cult classic series of speculative works: the Ambergris trilogy. Now, for the first time ever, the story of the sprawling metropolis of Ambergris is collected into a single volume, including City of Saints and Madmen, Shriek: An Afterword, and Finch.

The essence of Vandermeer’s magic
Revisado: 06-15-21
Essential reading for any fan of The Southern Reach trilogy. I picked up this book immediately after reading Area X and had a hard time getting into it. I have to admit now that I didn’t give it a chance. If I had finished the first chapter even, I would have been hooked. I have since devoured every other piece of fiction by Jeff Vandermeer and Ambergris was all I had left. So I tried again. I’m SO happy I did! This book ties in beautifully with the other worlds he has created! This is a MUST READ for any fan of his work! This trilogy puts a whole new perspective on the books that came after and leaves the reader searching for ties between worlds. Vandermeer fan or not it is a vividly constructed story that draws you in and leaves you wanting more with every page. Could not put it down.
