A great ending to a great series
Revisado: 04-07-25
This entire four volume series was one of the best Western series I ever read. It was realistic and exciting and Hank Fallon’s story was compelling all along the way. I wish we could figure out who the ghostwriter was who wrote these books, because I’d love to read more by them. But alas, NDA’s and legal contracts being what they are, we likely never will know.
Nevertheless, so grateful who wrote these did so and so well.
And the narration was outstanding. Love this reader.

A good one, though not my favorite
Revisado: 01-19-25
The twist in the story I saw coming way before Elvis did. That bothered me a little, because he should be smarter than me.
I also agree with some of the other reviewers in part: while I like this reader, I don’t really like the way he does voices for women, or at least some of them. Something about that feels forced to me - not sure why.
This is a pretty good Elvis Cole/Joe Pike novel. Not one of the best, but still for fans of the series, a must-read.

Historia
Hank Fallon used to be one of the best deputy marshals in the country. Then, he got framed for a crime he didn't commit. Got sentenced to 10 years in a federal penitentiary. And got out early for saving the life of the captain of the guards during a riot. When Fallon is released, a private detective is waiting for him. He wants to put Hank behind bars again - but this time, as an undercover agent.... The last thing Fallon wants is to return to jail. Especially a rat-infested hellhole like Yuma Territorial Prison. But if he wants to clear his name, he's got to take the job.

This was great storytelling all the way around. Well written, well read. And definitely had me wanting more.
I only wish I could know who actually wrote this. So I could read more of the work of whoever it was. Under the brand name, it could be anyone. Looking forward to finishing the books.

Historia
The "Hot Kid" of the U.S. Marshals Service, Carl Webster maintains the law with a cool, showdown attitude. He's one of the richest creations in Elmore Leonard's half century of delivering the goods. From his appearances in the critically acclaimed novels The Hot Kid and Up in Honey's Room, Carl returns to lay down the law in a novella that originally appeared as a serial in the New York Times Sunday Magazine.

Another Great Book By Dutch Leonard
Revisado: 06-21-23
I thought this little collection with the title novella as its showpiece was superb. A great period piece set in that Leonard sweet-spot between his Westerns and more modern crime novels, this one set in early 20th century and has the origin story of “The Hot Kid”, Carl Webster.
Vintage Leonard in every way and well read by Josh Clark. I like how he does voices of different characters.

Historia
Master criminal Parker takes another turn for the worse as he tries to recover loot from a heist gone terribly wrong. Parker and two cohorts stole the assets of a bank in transit, but the police heat was so great they could only escape if they left the money behind. Now Parker and his associates plot to reclaim the loot, which they hid in the choir loft of an unused country church.

We say goodbye to Parker
Revisado: 06-07-23
This is the final book in the series. It follows what happened in the previous book. As with all
of the books, I think it can be read as a standalone, but it is somewhat enhanced if you have read all of the previous books.
It wasn’t intended to be the final book, but the author Donald Westlake writing as Richard Stark died not long after completion.
There’s a few too many moving parts and characters in this book. This book is not about a heist, but rather about recovering the money from the heist at the beginning of the last book, ASK THE PARROT.
While this will never be my favorite Parker book, it’s still a good one. The reader does a good job, although not my favorite reader of the Parker series either. I will re-read the entire series once again. And I will miss the next Parker book which never happened.
They are all decent reads. And I suspect very re-readable.
Goodbye Parker.

Historia
Racing through the backwoods of Massachusetts and on the verge of being taken down for one of the biggest and most disastrous bank heists the state has ever seen, Parker runs right into the barrel of a gun pointed from the wrong side of the law. A quiet and angry recluse with only a silent parrot for company in his seclusion, Tom Lindahl saves Parker from the police dogs, but enmeshes him in yet another in a long line of dubious, highly dangerous, but seriously profitable jobs.

Very Good, But Mixed
Revisado: 06-05-23
The performance was great on this. Not my favorite reader of the Parker books, but a very good one. Overall I round up from 4 1/2 stars to five.
The story had some interesting twists on the formula. For one thing, there’s a moral dilemma, which is usually not part of Parker books. It’s not a moral dilemma from Parker‘s point of view, but from one of the minor characters (although as Larry Block says in his introduction, just as it applies to actors, it applies to writers: there are no minor characters). The way it is introduced, and dealt with, especially when in the beginning fascinated me.
There are also some other interesting twists that come up in the storytelling.
Having said all that, I have to take off at least a half a star on the story itself. There just seem to be so many conveniences and coincidences. Just a few too many for me. It didn’t ruin the story, but it’s slightly marred it.
Recommended still, especially for a diehard fans of the series like me. And we’re getting close to the end of the entire series by this book, so each one is precious.

Historia
Backflash finds Parker checking out the scene on a Hudson River gambling boat. Parker’s no fan of either relaxation or risk, however, so you can be sure he’s playing with house money - and he’s willing to do anything to tilt the odds in his favor. Featuring a great cast of heisters, a striking setting, and a new introduction by Westlake’s close friend and writing partner, Lawrence Block, this classic Parker adventure deserves a place of honor in any crime fan’s library.

Another Excellent Parker Story
Revisado: 06-04-23
One of the things I love about the Parker books is the question: who is the wild card? What will be the monkey wrench in the machinery? As there almost always is one.
These wild cards often help make the story so interesting because of the strange turns it takes. And quite often we are given hints about this early on, making the books as much mysteries as thrillers. And this one follows that trope.
Great cast of characters, including a few of the “usual suspects” who have been in other books.
And another outstanding reading.
Plus, another worthwhile forward by Westlake’s good friend and fellow crime and thriller writer, Larry Block.

Historia
The 16th Parker novel, Butcher’s Moon, is more than twice as long most of the master heister’s adventures, and absolutely jammed with the action, violence, and nerve-jangling tension listeners have come to expect. Back in the corrupt town where he lost his money, and nearly his life, in Slayground, Parker assembles a stunning cast of characters from throughout his career for one gigantic, blowout job: starting - and finishing - a gang war. It feels like the Parker novel to end all Parker novels, and for nearly 25 years, that’s what it was.

Maybe the Best - Certainly the Longest
Revisado: 06-02-23
This Parker book is over 10 hours. That’s more than twice what most of the books are. But it earns it. I highly recommend you read most of the others that are before this one first. Because now I am pretty sure if you like the Parker books, you could still enjoy this one on its own, it’s much better if you know some of the threads which get tied up in this one. This was the last book for many decades, end it works as kind of a temporary final chapter.
Thankfully Westlake did come back to the Parker universe over 20 years later.
So far, this is my favorite of the series. And that’s saying something, because I have liked a few of them quite a bit.

The hunter becomes prey, as a heist goes sour and Parker finds himself trapped in a shuttered amusement park, besieged by a bevy of local mobsters. There are no exits from Fun Island. Outnumbered and outgunned, Parker can’t afford a single miscalculation. He’s low on bullets - but, as anyone who’s crossed his path knows, that definitely doesn’t mean he’s defenseless.

A Locked Amusement Park Mystery
Revisado: 05-31-23
Title of review is partially a riff on the story and specifically a scene in the story.
(Very light spoilers: what is described below is obvious from beginning and most summaries of book)
But this is a great Parker book, where like the previous one, the heist merely starts the story, but the story is not about the heist, but about a situation which developed. And here, about Parker trapped inside an amusement park closed for the season, while really bad and dangerous people are coming to kill him.
Really sets up a suspense filled story, with some great action and character development.
Highly recommended and well read.

Soon Parker finds himself - and his woman, Claire - menaced by a pair of sadistic, drug-crazed hippies. Even Better
Revisado: 05-30-23
The previous Parker novel was a return to form and it w now among my favorites.
This one goes even better and adds a suspense/thriller element in a pair of antagonists, monsters, almost a horror aspect. There’s a cat & mouse feel to this one. But who is the cat and who the mouse? It keeps changing throughout.
