Historia
Benjamin's life was perfect. He'd just graduated from college and landed his dream job; he was finally ready to make his own way in life. However, before he could do that, he and his buddies decided to go on one last camping trip that changed everything. Suddenly, the five of them were ripped from their campsite on Earth by powerful magics, brought face-to-face with the might of the rune mages, and forced to become pawns in larger schemes.

Great start!
Revisado: 03-20-24
Good character development, although I need more. This is what I would consider an excellent first book in a series, setting up the background and mechanics for the readers, but it ends on a soft cliffhanger. It’s a good stopping spot, but if there was more of the story ready, I wouldn’t put the book down here. Highly encourage people who like litrpgs to pick this one up, as it doesn’t have the endless stats that bog down so many books in the genre, and it is a refreshingly novel take on character building.

Historia
Minalan the Spellmonger has come a long way since he woke up to a goblin invasion almost a decade ago. Since then, he has built cities and mighty armies, invented new enchantments, and pioneered entirely new fields of magic. Now that the Witch Queen of Darkfaller has taken over one of the most powerful castles in the center of the kingdom, he has to marshal all his resources—political, military, and arcane—to try to drive her from the strategic and symbolically important stronghold.

Love catching up on all this backstory. Keras is my favorite character in this universe, and I love all the side episodes of his life that explain why he is so powerful later.

Historia
I’m a Gemini. Impulsive. Curious. Headstrong. A twin. Heir to a throne I know nothing about. And it turns out, I’m Fae. But of course, there’s a catch - all I have to do to claim my birthright is prove that I’m the most powerful supernatural in the whole of Solaria. And sure, technically that’s true, as I’m the daughter of the Savage King. But the bit they didn’t put in the brochure was that every single Fae in this Kingdom would claim my throne if they could.

Where is the counselor
Revisado: 07-26-23
Straight up victim abuse. Hopefully in the next book the main characters actually learn something useful. This entire book amounts to “at the end, the only thing you learned is that you already knew you can’t trust anyone”. Where is character development, where is any kind of redemption? Where is the school counselor?
I know that fae are portrayed in literature as generally as evil as it gets, but in a story where the main characters ARE fae, I expected more development of the race, and less blatant victim bashing.

Setting off, then, to traverse the continent in search of the missing Paladin Yollock, it isn't long before they find themselves sucked into a maelstrom of adventures involving a woman who has been robbed, a desperate Cape Verstaad grandee, not to mention a cutthroat city which proves itself a veritable nest of ne'er-do-wells. Controlled by the brilliant assassin Reik Silvermantle, this hub of lawlessness and immorality presents Ahren and his friends with one of their greatest challenges.

New narrator strikes again
Revisado: 07-13-23
This story is excellent, if a little rushed at times. Lots of action keeps it interesting as always with this series.
Stop changing narrators this deep into a series!! Even a decent reader like the one who narrates this story will struggle to fill the shoes of another excellent reader who has given life to the entire cast of characters.
We as listeners have become accustomed to certain inflections and personalities given to the characters, and have been let down by the choice to switch readers this late in the series.

Getting less enthused about these cliffhangers
Revisado: 09-07-20
These books are amazing, and are narrated perfectly. This is however, the first book in the series where I had to actively fight to not skip ahead through superfluous descriptions of spells and skills.
Some of the past books have taken months of in-book time, but this book is less than 7 full days of time in The Land. It also ends on what I consider to be a less than necessary cliffhanger.
That said, and potential small spoiler, no one is in immediate danger of dying when this book ends. I hate it when books end without at least tying off the main plot point they began on, and sadly this is the first book where no major plot point is to be completed.
I am still looking forward to the rest of the books in this series, but I worry that with the teaser of the new book series this author is writing (as an epilogue), that this series may suffer or may not be written/finished soon. It is always sad to see authors take on too many projects and lose sight of what made one or multiple good series great, this can cause those older series to flag. I sincerely hope that this isn’t the case with these books. I am sure that I am not the only person invested in Richter and The Land itself, and I would hate to see too many more books like this one in the future.
Overall the book is still good. My criticism is that it has a noted rise in menu screens that are painful and slow to make it through. Characters still grow some, and while I wouldn’t have cut any of the main story plot points that do occur in this book, some of the descriptions and reiterations of past events are unnecessary.
I feel like this would have been a great first half of a longer book, and should probably have been held back until the story line could be finished. The previous book was three times as long as this one, and while this book is on par with the earlier books in the series in terms of length, it fails to finish a story in that amount of time/pages.

Way to RUIN my favorite book!
Revisado: 08-08-18
I have a hardcover copy of this, and a soft cover one that I loan out to people who haven't read it yet. This book is one of the best in this series, top 3 for sure!!! I bought the audio version to listen to in the car on my way to work. I will be returning the audio book so that I don't support this reader.
The reader is a monotone combination of "Stallone's Judge Dredd" and Clint Eastwood, even when he is reading the female voices. He absolutely ruined Zedd's voice, and Richard's voice makes him sound like a bad spaghetti western hero. It AMAZES me that anyone at brilliance audio managed to make it through 38 and a half hours of this guy reading into a mic, let alone all of the mistakes/retakes he must have made during his read, kudos to their patience.
I will never again buy a book read by Jim Bond.

Minalan gets medieval! When you defeat the invading goblin army, get knighted on the field of battle, gifted with lands and gold, usually your happily-ever-after is...happy. But now that Minalan the Spellmonger has been ennobled and enfiefed, Sire Minalan has a task cut out for him that makes defeating goblins seem like child’s play: Moving his very pregnant bride and a few thousand refugees from Boval Vale into the remote, sparsely peopled Domain of Sevendor. But when he arrives, he finds the land withered from neglect, filled with superstition and suspicion.

The series really picks up with this one
Revisado: 11-07-17
The first two books in this series were a little slow to start and had a lot of loose ends that haven't been addressed yet. In contrast, this book really picks up right at the beginning, and carries interest thoroughly throughout! Take a break from the war on the frontier with goblins, and enter into the magelord's fief, with all of the petty squabbles and high politics you can handle! This is my favorite book in the series so far! Keep em' comin'
