I'm sitting here listening to this with both hands pressed over my face in delight. My GOSH it's indulgent and wild and wonderful. I haven't read anything that made me so happy in years.

This was really, really, really fun. If you like the Alien series this fits right in with them. Lance Henriksen is back as Bishop and has the gravitas that made him so good in the original Aliens. I enjoyed every minute of it!

I'm here, I'm queer, I thought I would be INTO this book, but I found not a lot to respond to. The pieces were neither sincere, well written, nor moving enough to keep me interested even though this is usually totally my jam. I faded out before I finished it, which seems like a sign since I am definitely the target market.

Give it a miss.

a delight and a classic

I keep recommending this book to people. They either haven't heard of it, pick it up and thank me, or have read it and we spend a gleeful ten minutes telling our favourite story from within. Even people who read it years and years ago like my mother clearly have a part in mind that filled them with glee.

It's a warm, family focused shenanigansy story perfect for anyone with embarrassing zany relatives

This whole book was really cruel. Who it cast as the 'weak' characters, how it had them consistently craven or stupid when faced with any kind of obstacle- it was just so much unfettered nastiness, and the targets were nerds, young people, gender studies majors- but mostly nerds. Weird choice for a scifi writer.

I was left with a very clear sense that Larry Correia would like me to know that he doesn't like me very much. He even wrote himself as an insert into his own story in order to have him tell me so!

This was a fun, whippy little take on a weird subculture. It's always interesting when you get into the people who are WAY TOO INTO some corner of the internet. A few weird traditions, a few fun characters, a couple of dumb controversies that several people care waaaaay too much about. I enjoyed learning more about pepper people!

It wasn't great, it wasn't terrible. A sorrowfully surface level take on the stories. I wish I'd just listened to the unabridged originals, but I guess I got what I paid for (free monthly original.)

An interesting research project; the history of the illness and an exploration of the search for a cure over the centuries. It can be a bit dry and dense but if you're interested in that kind of thing no one does it quite as well as Siddhartha Mukherjee.

weird choice for true crime

It's always an incredibly complicated choice to give a convicted murderer a huge platform in a case where he maintains there's been a miscarriage of justice but there isn't 100% credible evidence that that was the case. Yes some parts of the story were ambiguous, but he's hardly CLEARLY INNOCENT. If I were the family of the victim I'd feel pretty violated by this take on the case.

Honestly this is probably my favourite thing of his I've ever read. Yes it rambles a little, and yes it has problems, but boy was it a lot of fun. Super relevant if you happen to come across it during the cresting coronavirus panic of early 2020. Here's hoping we don't all go the way of the Stand!
