The story gets lost in the narration. Started over three times, before I finally gave up. I just couldn't stand to listen anymore.

The audio quality is bad, the voices she does are horrible, and it sounds like I imagine a patchwork would do, if it had a voice. Like it's clipped together in a weird way and it also sounds like lack of proper equipment. Not that I think it would have made a difference. The voices for the different characters were just... over the top and unpleasant.

The story might be decent, I don't know, but even with the major info dumps, I still felt like stumbling in the dark or landing in episode 42 of a tv series I'm not familiar with. If this is meant to be an introduction to the series, it fails. If it's for all of those who have read the series already, it's probably fine. They'll know the backstory already and get extra information and story about characters they already know and love.

To give this book a chance, pick up the Kindle version or a paperback version. The audio does not do this book any favors.

This was my first Pendergast story, and it'll be my last for sure! So utterly unbelievable. I don't even know why I kept listening. I just can't make myself abandon ship, it seems.

The narrator did a great job, with what he had to work with.
I feel sorry for him, though. I hope he was paid well, to endure this travesty.

Interesting concept, and overall well done.
Not sure if it's new, but it is to me :)

Darren - the main character - has abilities beyond the usual, which he uses to his advantage in several ways. He can go into "the quiet" where time stands still, and he can walk around in that "world", touch things etc, but he can't do anything that will remain that way when he goes out. Everything will go back to be as it was.

He then discovers that he's not alone, that he can read minds, when he touches people. Not only can he tell what the other person is thinking right now, he can go back in time and experience parts of their life, and what they thought at that time.

The "I, Darren"-parts when the main character is mind reading could easily drive me crazy. I'm sure there could have been a better way to do the mind reading parts, without that stupid line occurring over and over.

Also, the story doesn't really end, but leads into the next book (I assume). Would have been nice if it had been longer and more finished. I haven't looked into the rest of the series, and probably won't be for now. Lots of other interesting books to read, and I bet the next book won't have a more finished feel to it anyway.

To be fair, the "exciting" arc in this book is finished and wrapped up.
I first rated 4 stars, but reconsidered. It's probably 3 1/5 stars. So - 3 stars.

I'll (try to) return to this series, when all the awesome books on my TBR have been read. As I said, I like the concept. Just not so much, that I have to continue right now.

The narrator did an okay job with the material he had.
He sounded slightly bored at times - and made me want to scream each time he said "I, Darren". But how could he say it? Have to read what's in the book.

Book 2 in the Android X series is a very worthy follower to book 1.

We get some more background details about the world as a whole, while we follow X and Shortcut around in their hunt for Jeanette Crenshaw and her androids. X gets his memory chip back, and discover some interesting facts.

I won't spoil the story, but instead recommend that you listen - or read - it yourself. It's such a rich and exciting world. The characters are great, they're flawed and wonderfully human - even the androids ;)

I really like how realistic the author has made this book. He makes the futuristic parts sound very natural, while also exciting. Who wouldn't love to have nano bots riding around their body, discovering you have cancer and take care of that while you're sleeping, just to take one example? So many small notes about things like that, dotted throughout the book. Very clever.

We get a big chunk of backstory for the world very nicely woven into the story itself. A great way to integrate it, since it is shown to us through a futuristic museum, and not some awkward conversation about things that both characters already know (which is seen over and over again in a lot of tv shows). Kudos for handling that so well!

I truly enjoyed every minute of this book, and I can't wait for the next one!

Good narration, although the voice of Shortcut is starting to annoy me a bit, but nothing major so far. The narrator does a good job for pacing along with the storyline.

Great book - and wonderful narration

I really enjoyed this first book in the series, and I'm looking forward to the next book.

The narrator did a wonderful job, and the story was engaging all the way through.

Michael La Ronn did a great job with convincing me that Android easily could be part of our daily life in the future, and of course he touches upon the usual things that will be part of any book or movie about androids/robots in almost any form: the complications involved when they learn to think for themselves - what will happen?

But actually, that's not the main theme here at all. We are. Us. The humans. We are flawed. And deeply so.

The characters are rich and well developed, and even though it is a rather short book, the author manages to get a lot of information and backstory told, along with creating a believable setting for the time we're in, without it ever being boring, or making it feel like an info dump.

Loved it, and I'm ready for the next one!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, good story, although pretty dark. I would clearly tell them up front, that the story isn't resolved in any way in this book. It's the first of a series. I'm not a fan of the narration, but then again, I'm very picky when it comes to audio books, and I'm sure others would enjoy that aspect more than I did. The story was good, and for those who prefer audio over reading, I would definitely recommend this book to them.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

In some places, yes. There are some parts that goes of on tangents, that doesn't make that much sense to me right now, but perhaps it'll make sense when I finish the series. Other parts could easily have been left out, like a kidnapped girl, worrying about make-up and such. I feel pretty sure, that only a totally superficial girl would worry about that when being held against her will - and even that would be a stretch to believe. Survival drift would rise to the top, and push every other thing far down on the list.

Did the narration match the pace of the story?

The narration was awful in places. Sounds just like when I turn on text-to-speech on my Mac or Kindle. And it's weird, because the dialogue parts were mostly good. I don't know why it sounds so bad for all the other stuff. It sounds strangely like words were read separately, and then combined by a computer afterwords, depending on how they appear on the page. Also there were at least once, where a word was repeated. Unfortunately I can't remember where, or I would have told the author.A few places where the toning of the dialogue feels all wrong and so on.I will continue this series on Kindle, not in audio.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

No. The story never goes deep into the feelings in this first book. More telling, than showing on that part, which distances the listener/reader from the emotions that the family is going through.

Any additional comments?

This story could have been a lot better with a better narrator. I will not be listening to any other books that has this narrator.
