Historia
When Alexandra Richards approaches professional declutterer Ellen Curtis to ask her to help sort out her mother’s chaotic flat, Ellen gets the impression Alexandra doesn’t like her mother very much. So when Ingrid Richards’ body is discovered in her burned-out home, Alexandra’s exasperated words don’t seem like such a joke. Due to the hazardous state of the victim’s over-cluttered residence, the police are inclined to dismiss her death as an unfortunate accident. Ellen’s not so sure. Could Alexandra’s resentment toward her mother have escalated into outright violence?

Disappointed
Revisado: 01-27-25
I go to Simon Brett reading Simon Brett for the characters with eyerolling quirks yet very human foibles. I love the mix of light, sometimes comedic moments, with challenging puzzles inherent in a cosy mystery. And I always learn something about the times, places, and interests his characters bring to the stories. BUT WHAT THE HECK? I listened to this second installment of this series as my first, because it was on sale. There is no humor, no character I could feel hopeful about, and no healthy people to counterbalance the dysfunctional ones. As a listener, I also found the first person perspective disorienting and flat. Sorry Simon.

Maybe because this is my third in the series, but...
Revisado: 04-11-24
I was struck how much time was spent recapitulating the previous titles in the series. Much of the detail therein did little to support the thread of this story, and, in fact, spoiled the opportunity to entice readers to want to read those titles. In addition, readers who had taken the series in order already knew the background.
I will say, however, that the identity of the culprit remained a mystery right up to the name being spoken. The description in Olivia's mind could have been several characters, and yet the intensity of the revelation for her was conveyed even before we knew.

The small village of Kilbane is hosting a poker tournament at the local pub, and card sharp Eamon Foley, a tinker out of Dublin, is set to win the tournament. But when Foley is found at the end of a rope, it’s time for the garda to take matters into their own hands. Macdara Flannery would lay odds it’s a simple suicide, but Siobhán suspects foul play, as does Foley’s pregnant widow.

The Narrator is Essential
Revisado: 11-26-22
Plot moves quickly enough, and red herrings are plentiful, and characters have a little meat on their bones. But for me, the authenticity of an Irish accent for an Irish setting is the ticket.

The hazards of self-publishing
Revisado: 07-27-20
I don't know who needed to be better at their job, but I had to quit listening. The narrator mispronounces so many words, including terms pivotal to the content, that I have to wonder if the author even listened before publishing.

Need an American proof-listener?
Revisado: 01-22-20
I have few complaints ever about Cherringham books, the narrator, or story. Audible quality is wonderful. But, as with most other UK productions including an "American" character, there would be definite benefit to having an actual American give the dialogue a run-through. Jack may be from "NYC" but, from the first episode, he uses some words and expressions that we just don't. With this episode though, I just have to say something. Jack mispronounces Adirondack and Quantico. Names are notorious for having local pronunciations, but both of these are internationally known references. Does Audible hire preview listeners? If so, I'm in!

When Edward Townes - famed writer of novels about knights and maids, and castles and conquering - attends a medieval launch party for his latest book, he arrives ready to do more than celebrate. But party night brings a blizzard, a once-in-a-century storm that sees Townes staggering home, alone ... only to be found dead the next day. With Cherringham cut-off and the blizzard still raging, Jack and Sarah start investigating. Their questions reveal that many of those still stranded in the dark village have secrets. And Townes' killer is still in the village.

I had to interrupt my listening to say this...
Revisado: 01-22-20
I have always LOVED Neil Dudgeon. I know him from Midsomer Murders, before and after he became the second Barnaby, and he maintains that same "one eyebrow slightly lifted" as narrator of every Cherringham audiobook. But in this one, Chapter 20, with Dugeon's reading about the effective use of a pause during questioning, I laughed out loud and then it got even better! Genius!

More than your money's worth!
Revisado: 01-17-20
Multiple individual stories woven expertly into a single plot line in a way that draws you in without leaving you lost. Characters are not confused because you come to know each one. The narrator not only changes accents and volume, but cadence and emotion with enough consistency that names were not essential to knowing who was in the room. In two cases, the identity of an approaching character was correctly assumed because it would be just like them to show up right now. Add the fact that this story refers back and forth between the past and present, including in the provision of historical context and asides directly to the reader, and the resulting tapestry reflects the work of a master weaver.
