Silly
Revisado: 03-20-25
The story was ridiculous, as were the characters. The narraters were fine until it came to the Nextdoor neighbor/landlord guy…I think he was suppose to sound deep and sexy but really, I would have guessed a frog croaking or throat cancer. But, I needed a mindless listen while doing a big project today that didn’t require concentration, it worked well enough for that.

Historia
A best seller in its native Canada, Drunk Mom is a gripping, brutally honest memoir of motherhood in the shadow of alcoholism. Three years after giving up drinking, Jowita Bydlowska found herself throwing back a glass of champagne like it was ginger ale. It was a special occasion: a party celebrating the birth of her first child. It also marked Bydlowska's immediate, full-blown return to crippling alcoholism.

So dull…
Revisado: 11-22-22
I’m a huge memoir fan, and this story was a brave, raw personal exposure showcasing the grip and horrors of addiction, and I hope it was able to help others in this boat to not feel alone and perhaps face their own demons.
But, I finally had to put this away after about 4 hours of listening, I was bored to tears. Frustrating, because it could have been riveting. Was it the extremely monotone narrating, or perhaps the use of constant wordy metaphors? Or both? I really can’t say for sure, I only know when I finally said enough and stopped listening, I wished I’d stopped hours before I did. Although I gave the story itself 5 stars, I did so only because it had so much potential.

"I am a survivor of horrific physical and mental abuse inflicted on me by the one person in my life that was supposed to love and protect me and teach me right from wrong.... My journey to overcome my childhood demons was difficult and painful; but in the end, I realized that my past is what it is and it was up to me to decide my future. I realized that I needed to tell the rest of my story and show everyone what I endured to finally be able to sit back and say, 'It is what it is.'"

The amazing human spirit…
Revisado: 11-20-22
This is a a horror story of unspeakable abuse, but also one of fortitude, strength and survival. I’m always mind blown and sickened when I read of mothers out there with the inclinations and capabilities for inflicting unspeakable abuse on the children they’ve brought into this world. There’s simply no words.
With that said, I at times while listening to this found myself wondering what happens to abused girls/women who are not gifted with the same beauty, charm and intellect of the author, those who can’t so easily surround themselves with support or a handsome husband who will gush compliments and validate all they do and accomplish at every turn to aid in the healing. Just a thought.
As for the less than perfect rating, it was only because the narrator didn’t sit well with me at times, the inflections sometimes seemed fake and overly dramatic, something I often had to try to ignore. I found the same issue with her first book, ‘Why Me’… same narrator. I much prefer a memoir read by the author. Other than that, this was a worthy listen.
I’m SO sorry Sarah. I celebrate your survival and that you have come so far.

Mary Karr's biography looks back through a child's eyes to sort through dark household secrets. She witnesses an inheritance squandered, endless bottles emptied, and guns leveled at both the deserving and the undeserving. In a voice stripped of self-pity and charged with brilliant energy, she introduces us to a family ravaged by lies and alcoholism, yet redeemed by the revelation of truth.

Immersed me.
Revisado: 03-05-22
I read some comments criticizing the narration, but I found her style drew my into her story,. Vocal theatrics can be so distracting, and this is a writer who paints detailed visuals with her magical use of language, affected inflections would have taken something away.
I have several half listened to books on here, too many that I should have sent back I suppose, so it was pleasure to listen to a story that I was anxious to get back to. My favorite listening is a really good memoir, this is one.

When Mark Lanegan first arrived in Seattle in the mid-1980s, he was just "an arrogant, self-loathing redneck waster seeking transformation through rock 'n' roll." Little did he know that within less than a decade, he would rise to fame as the frontman of the Screaming Trees, and then fall from grace as a low-level crack dealer and a homeless heroin addict, all the while watching some of his closest friends rocket to the forefront of popular music.

Gripping.
Revisado: 08-26-20
A raw, riveting and honest account of Mark Lanegan’s abuse ridden youth, his successful rise in the 80’s and 90’s amidst Seattle’s grunge’ music scene while at the same time sinking into the depth’s of horrific addiction until finally hitting a bottom so low that knowing he survived is shocking in and of itself.
So well written and and narrated with his deep gravely voice that it’s about impossible to put down.
I certainly wish him continued health and well being!

In 1950s Quebec, French and English tolerate each other with precarious civility - much like Maggie Hughes' parents. Maggie's English-speaking father has ambitions for his daughter that don't include marriage to the poor French boy on the next farm over. But Maggie's heart is captured by Gabriel Phénix. When she becomes pregnant at 15, her parents force her to give baby Elodie up for adoption and get her life "back on track".

Glad I ordered it...
Revisado: 03-11-20
This was a ‘daily deal’ in my email...I always check those out but rarely see any that pique my interest, so I was happy to stumble upon this. It was so nice to listen to a well written novel with exceptional narration, it’s been awhile! Intriguing history, interesting characters and a good story, even though it contains a dark topic in Canada’s history. My only complaint is, it felt like a story that could have done nicely with an epilogue.

"My father had more than 50 children." So begins the haunting memoir of Anna LeBaron, daughter of the notorious polygamist and murderer Ervil LeBaron. With her father wanted by the FBI for killing anyone who tried to leave his cult - a radical branch of Mormonism - Anna and her siblings were constantly on the run with the other sister-wives. Often starving and always desperate, the children lived in terror. Even though there were dozens of them together, Anna always felt alone.

It was interesting to listen to an entire experience of growing up in a hideous cult...the abuse, neglect and trauma that these kids experience, so tragic. But do be prepared for quite a bit a of proselytizing towards the end though.

After more than a decade, when sisters Nikki, Sami, and Tori Knotek hear the word mom, it claws like an eagle’s talons, triggering memories that have been their secret since childhood. Until now. For years, behind the closed doors of their farmhouse in Raymond, Washington, their sadistic mother, Shelly, subjected her girls to unimaginable abuse, degradation, torture, and psychic terrors. Revisado: 01-31-20
Exceptionally well narrated, exceptionally well written.
As for the story...well, it’s hard to find words. It was so mind boggling that I had to google old media reports to confirm that I was listening to a non-fictional memoir and not a fictional horror story. That the survivor sisters have managed to create healthy adult lives after what they experienced and witnessed during childhood is nothing less than miraculous.
I suggest future listeners have a of level of emotional resilience before choosing this book, it is shocking and horrifying in addition to being riveting.

Heartbreaking.
Revisado: 01-27-20
I too come from a football family, however, I have spent my adult life watching only the Super Bowl each year, that’s it, I don’t follow teams, players or seasonal games. So that all this came of interest to me has been surprising to myself.
But, I also lost a brother while we were in our 30’s in which circumstances leading up to that event held a lot of history and mysterious elements. That history also contained football head injuries.
I somehow landed on Aaron’s story during a bit of documentary watching on TV, I almost passed it over but decided to check it out. Subsequently, I watched an additional, longer and more in-depth, version on a Netflix documentary series. I found it all to be completely engrossing and heartbreaking for all involved, so complex with so many conditions coming into play that may have contributed to this terrible tragedy. With all that under my belt, I decided to go further and listen to DJ’s book. It was worth the listen. (Although some of the narrator’s dramatic inflections felt contrived and unnecessary at times)
If you see this DJ, or Jonathan, I’m SO sorry for all this to have happened in your life and for your loss, to you and your family.
And, thank you for sharing your story and your perspective. I too hope it helps people wake up more fully to the risks of this sport.

Revisado: 01-24-20
So many overlaps to my own life.
I love memoirs, I love reading about the challenges of others, the going through and overcoming to the best of their ability, and although my family’s social status in life certainly varied from the protagonist’s, at times I felt like she was telling my story, seriously. I found myself fighting tears at times. This memoir will stay with me.
Wonderfully narrated as well.
