My family is planing a trip through the south, and I read this to learn more about Natchez and I'm soooo excited to go there now. These stories are fascinating!

I was so into this book. I loved being in Weissmann’s clear prose, and it made me want to be part of the Justice Department. I loved the drama of good intentions and good faith efforts crashing into “The death of honesty mattering.”
Also, I’ve had frustrating jobs, but holy smokes, I felt for Weissmann on so many levels. It was amazing to see how distorted (by pressure and obstruction) the process of creating the Mueller Report was. (The distortions of how it was released to the public were already obvious to me).
I’m very grateful that this book exists. Anything that brings a way of understanding this baffling time is such a balm to my nerves. (Mary Trump book was also a balm in this sense; both books gave me a sense that I was on solid ground again.) When “truth” has been this consistently in the Cuisinart, it feels naïve to even believe that “truth” has a chance, but Weissmann’s earnest faith in truth mattering feels like an important part of ever healing from all of this.

I was afraid to read this because, in general, I try to avoid Donald's bullying & bragging and feared this might be a wade through infectiously toxic material. But Mary's voice gives a lucid scaffold for sane neurons to hang on to, and this is such an soothing read because it makes all my intuitive misgivings make sense.

Sternbergs Bücher sind Romanzen, aber irgendwie fühlen sie sich frisch und echt an, was ich sehr schätze. Ich habe meine Zeit mit diesen Charakteren in Italien geliebt.

There is some writing here I enjoyed a lot, but the narrator’s kvellingly cheerful delivery (as if introducing a heartwarming children’s movie in every sentence) made me want to stop many times. My book club was reading this, though, so I persevered.

Also, a production note: there are no pauses at all between the different essays, so when a story ends on a touching moment, the next story starts immediately, mid-feels.

I love these books, but if you're gonna re-read one for xanax, maybe skip this one. The recaps for new readers (Hogwarts is a school for wizards! Harry didn't find out until his 11th birthday that he was a wizard!) jolt you out of the story. And it's wall to wall a tour of some of the most annoying characters in the series: Dobby, Gilderoy, Colin, Peeves, Filch, Moaning Myrtle, not to mention the Dursleys and Malfoy. The Riddle's Diary stuff is cool.

There is good stuff here, but I stopped listening after a while because of two things that didn't sit with me.

structural critique:
a lot of this is plot summary, and translating dialogue, then playing excerpts. I don't need that. Like, I'd rather watch a youtube video of an aria with subtitles without hearing Greenberg act out the parts. I thought it would be more analysis, and amazing observations, not so much plot summary. Could be that that comes after I stopped listening.

But mainly there is a way that the narrator takes on almost a mocking tone in the attempt to inject energy and "sell" this as exciting. I am excited about opera and Mozart, no need to sell so hard. I couldn't stand it after a while because it seemed antithetical to the delicacy and beauty of the operas.

The author announces proudly that this book is self-published (Yay DIY!), but an editor's comb could have done wonders here in tightening up the rambling. There’s a long of preamble about what the book is not, which could have been shortened to, “This is about big picture inspiration, not the details.” Then it launches into over-explained common sense, with the occasional interesting thought (like the idea of Productive Impatience). It might be OK if you have never thought about maverick career moves before and if you can bear hearing etc. pronounced “egg-cetera”. I gave it three stars, though, because business books are often written in a vacuous style, and it could be good for if you want a buddy in your ear getting your ideas percolating.
