Historia
Yorkshire, 1843. When disgraced former schoolmaster John Eyre arrives at Thornfield Hall to take up a position as tutor to two peculiar young boys, he enters a world unlike any he's ever known. Darkness abounds, punctuated by odd bumps in the night, strange creatures on the moor, and a sinister silver mist that never seems to dissipate. And at the center of it all, John's new employer - a widow as alluring as she is mysterious.

Very like Jane Eyre
Revisado: 04-21-25
I very nearly gave this four stars because it is so very similar in how it tracks with the story of Jane Eyre. This makes it slightly boring since you know exactly where it’s going. At the same time, it’s very clever and, typical of Mimi Matthews, very well written, so that I can’t justify only four stars. It doesn’t deviate much from Brontë’s story arc. In fact, there are lots of lines drawn, both directly and indirectly, from the original Jane Eyre. At the same time, the vampire element fits very cleverly into that Gothic tale. Thankfully, she shortened the end of the story and gave it a slight twist. I guess I wasn’t prepared for the direct similarity to Jane Eyre. I was hoping for a few more deviations and twists. However, if you don’t know Jane Eyre well I am sure you will find this a fabulous read. And if you do know Jane Eyre, it might be interesting for you to see how Matthews plays off the novel.

Historia
"It is the heart of this place, and it is dying," says the Beast. And it is true; the center of the Beast's palace, the glittering glasshouse that brings Beauty both comfort and delight in her strange new environment, is filled with leafless brown rosebushes. But deep within this enchanted world, new life, at once subtle and strong, is about to awaken. Twenty years ago Robin McKinley enthralled listeners with the power of Beauty. Now this extraordinarily gifted novelist retells the story of Beauty and the Beast again - but in a totally new way, with fresh perspective, ingenuity, and mature insight.

Revisado: 01-27-25
I love this rendition of beauty and the beast. The story is fabulous and so well written! I also appreciate the excellent narration. Love, love, love. In case it’s important to you, there’s nothing in it that would be offensive for children to hear. Maybe be a little scary for a younger ones but I’m planning on listening to this again with my 10-year-old. And I’m careful about what I let her listen to. Definitely recommend this.

Historia
Someone is preying upon the street children of Regency London. They seem to think no one will notice when urchins go missing—and even if they are noticed, who will care? Daniel needs to do something about the missing children. But with recent revelations about his past and an unexpected, somewhat unwelcome inheritance to deal with, this is a terrible time to dive back into the seedy underbelly of the crime world. Nevertheless, he's still a Bow Street runner, and his partner Lady Juliette is sensitive to the plight of these wayward youngsters.

Relying on story to drive the plot
Revisado: 09-03-24
I appreciate an author who actually relies on story instead of stupid miscommunication to drive the plot. The story has a strong but kind female and strong male hero who aren’t afraid to talk things out. There were plenty of interesting plot twists. Love a good beauty and beast love story.

Hampton Hall's new owner has the villagers of St. Hampton Heath all aflutter - all except Lavinia Ellison. The reverend's daughter cares for those who are poor and sick, and the seventh Earl of Hawkesbury definitely does not meet that criteria. His refusal to take his responsibilities seriously, or even darken the door of the church, leave her convinced he is as arrogant and reckless as his brother - his brother who stole the most important person in Lavinia's world.

“So pure, so lovely”…so annoying
Revisado: 08-19-24
I liked the premise of this story and it really did have some clever twists. I also appreciate not being dragged through any intimate scenes. However, the novel’s plot follows the oh so annoying “I love him, I love him not” trope. Just make up your mind already! A strong minded woman should also be strong minded in the arena of love, leaving room for a plot that is driven by something more interesting than insipid worries that could be taken care of if she was truly forthright in her conversation.
I may try another of this author’s books just to see if this was simply a one-off. Perhaps, too, the book would have been more enjoyable with a better reader.

Good story, but annoying heroine
Revisado: 08-17-24
Good use of twist and turns in the plot. Loved the relationship between the brother and sister. Unfortunately, during the middle of the book, I found myself rolling my eyes at the heroine’s behavior more than once. I get being hurt by somebody else, but later it was mentioned that she wasn’t all that hurt by the fickle, dishonest, ex fiancé. In other words, I can’t imagine any real person in her position would keep a very eligible man at arms’ length as long as she did. To be fair, the author did an excellent job explaining why the man stuck around. One begins to wonder why any man interested in a happy marriage would ever stick with a woman like this one. Still, it really was well written enough, well performed, and sweet enough that I stuck with it. I look forward to seeing how this author develops her writing over time. I imagine she will write some excellent novels in the future.

Historia
The infamous Lord Ragsdale is as rich as sin, as sinful as he is rich, and as heartless as he is handsome. But after he saves Emma from a life of indentured servitude and shame, Emma decides that it is her personal duty to save him from his wicked ways. Step one — stop his drinking, his gaming, and his wild revelry. Step two — make him break up with his mistress, the superbly sensual Fae Moullé, and transform him into a suitable suitor for the ideal wife that prim and proper Lady Clarissa Partridge would be. Step three — don’t fall in love with him.
