Historia
"I am a doctor." Every year, thousands of medical school graduates utter these four simple words. But as you will hear in Playing God, earning an MD is just the first step to becoming a real physician. In this thrilling and moving memoir, Dr. Anthony Youn reveals that the true metamorphosis from student to doctor occurs not in medical school but in the formative years of residency training and early practice. Here, you will take a journey through the world of surgery, hospitals, and the practice of medicine unlike any that you have traveled before.

Dr. Youn- The Type of Doctor We All Want
Revisado: 09-01-24
Right off I did not care for the narration of this book, and I didn’t think I wanted to continue. However, by the end of the first chapter, I changed my mind and actually looked forward to hearing the narrator read about Dr. Youn’s beginnings as a med student, husband, and doctor. And let me say— I really enjoyed this book.
Dr. Youn is exactly the kind of doctor (or neighbor for that matter) that I would love to have. He really seems to care about his patients, takes pride is his work while staying humble, and has a great sense of humor. He is also blessed with a wonderful wife and proud parents.
If it wasn’t for living in California, I would definitely consider visiting his office to see about getting a procedure or two. I love his sense of humor.

In this book, Riley scrutinizes the perspectives of athletes on the opposing side of this debate, deconstructing their arguments with science, facts, and logic. She also asks what has happened to free speech and dissent in this country, where it now seems nearly impossible to have a well-reasoned debate. And in telling her story, Riley reveals what’s at stake if the truth-seekers remain silent about the injustices women face from radical agendas.

Women and Girls Still Face Discrimination in Competition
Revisado: 08-19-24
I was shocked at the time when I first heard about Riley Gaines and other women not only having to complete against a former men’s swim team member, but also having to share a locker room together. Further more, hearing about her teammate that lost her spot to compete because the former men’s swimmer bumped her down in position is just plain wrong. As a former college athlete myself, I worked as hard as I could and practiced non-stop just to make the last position on the tennis team. I was so very grateful to be on the team and made the most of the opportunity I had earned. The partial scholarship that I received and a part time job allowed me to graduate and go on to become a teacher and administrator. I certainly wouldn’t have made the team if a player on the men’s team decided after 3 years to play their final year on the women’s team. There is no way I could have won a challenge match against them.
Come on NCAA and society. This is not a fair playing ground, and it is certainly not equitable for women. Do the right thing and stop this nonsense.
Lastly, this is not the type of book that I would normally reach for, but I heard about it on Mike Rowe’s podcast and thought I’d give it a listen. I’m glad I did.

Another outstanding book by Jacqueline Winspear!!!
Revisado: 06-21-24
I cannot believe (actually, I do not want to accept) that this is the last adventure for Maisie Dobbs. I didn’t discover this series until November 2023 and have been listening to each novel non-stop since then. I have enjoyed each book tremendously and always looked forward to the next one. And just when there seems to be so much more adventure out there for Maisie and all of the characters we have gotten to know and love, it is over.
I am so grateful not only to Ms. Winspear for writing this outstanding series, but also to Orlagh Cassidy for giving each character his/her own distinct and authentic personality. I loved that she narrated each and every Maisie Dobbs’ book (unlike some series that use multiple narrators). Between the descriptive writing and the narration, it made me feel as though I was there in person watching everything unfold.
Again— I am sorry that this will be the last book in the series. I feel like I’ve lost my best friend!

Historia
Almost six million Americans—about one in every ten people over the age of sixty-five—have Alzheimer’s disease or related dementias, and this number is projected to more than double by 2050. What is it like to live with and amid this increasingly prevalent condition—an affliction that some fear more than death? In My Father’s Brain, the distinguished physician and author Sandeep Jauhar sets his father’s descent into Alzheimer’s alongside his own journey toward understanding this disease and how it might best be coped with, if not cured.

Grateful for this book
Revisado: 09-09-23
This is one of the best books that I have read (listened to) on the subject of experiencing Alzheimer’s as a family member. My husband of 33 years, who I met in college while playing on the tennis team, was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in the summer of 2021. I have been slowing grieving ever since.
While listening to this book, I found myself constantly nodding with the experiences that Dr. Jauhar and his father were experiencing. Although painful and sad for me at times, I also found it quite affirming and comforting to know that what my husband and I are experiencing is typical for this horrible disease. I am thankful to Dr. Jauhar for having written this book, and recommend it to everyone.

Stunning...a wonderful listen...a handbook for life. Those words of advance praise from another celebrated author scarcely convey just how powerfully mesmerizing is the latest book by New York Times best-selling author and nationally syndicated radio talk show host Larry Elder. Dear Father, Dear Son is a personal memoir of Elder's troubled - one might even say tortured - relationship with his father, and the astonishing outcome that develops when Elder, at long last, confronts him.

Great book.... best of the year so far for me...
Revisado: 02-18-21
Listening to this book, I found similar parallels between Larry’s father and my own: walking on my tiptoes because my dad had just gotten off shift work and was sleeping during the day; the leather belt in his dresser drawer, always on standby to give me a whack, and the many times he would say, “You’d better stop crying or I’m going to give you something to really cry about.”
I, too, often wondered why my father had kids, when it seemed like he was always so mean and disappointed with my sister and me. We could never do anything right or enough to please him. My sister moved away to go to college the day after high school graduation and never returned. To this day, she has only come back to visit him about 5-6 times in the last 35 years (while only living 2 hours away). Luckily for me, I took the route Larry did and got to know my father, and also learned some of the reasons why he parented the way he did. This book brought back so many memories (good and bad). I am glad I got to discover it on Audible.

A perfect blend of medical drama and spiritual insight, Gray Matter is a fascinating account of Dr. David Levy's decision to begin asking his patients if he could pray for them before surgery. Some are thrilled. Some are skeptical. Some are hostile, and some are quite literally transformed by the request.

Revisado: 12-14-20
This book was very enjoyable on so many levels. When I had finished listening to it, I was sorry that Dr. Levy had only written this one book. I’d love to hear more stories about his life and his patients. To have your doctor be a praying man of God would be such a blessing, doubly so during neurosurgery.

A cute, but realistic story about a pug
Revisado: 05-21-20
As a teacher of 30 years and a rescue pug owner for about 25, I found this book to be perfect for elementary grade students. It covers many areas that we try to teach students: family, love, home, friendship, rough play, accidents, etc. From the pug side, it gives a springboard for discussions about what is required to be an animal owner and the topic of rescue animals. Being a children’s book, I didn’t expect it to elaborate on the delicate nature of pug eyes (or similar bulgy-eyed breeds like the Frenchie, Boston Terrier, Eng. Bulldog, etc.), but it does lend itself to have a conversation on the owners need to provide safe, supervised play with young puppies until they calm down. Having rescued 4 pugs (1 still living), all 4 had traumatic eye injury (blind in one or both eyes) most likely from rough play. I really liked the narrator; I believe she allowed the book to be appropriate for older elementary students too.
I would read another book by Deborah Hunt.

Sometimes in medicine the only way to know what is truly going on in a patient is to operate, to look inside with one's own eyes. This book is exploratory surgery on medicine itself, laying bare a science not in its idealized form but as it actually is - complicated, perplexing, and profoundly human.

The struggle to perform well is universal: each one of us faces fatigue, limited resources, and imperfect abilities in whatever we do. But nowhere is this drive to do better more important than in medicine, where lives are on the line with every decision. In this book, Atul Gawande explores how doctors strive to close the gap between best intentions and best performance in the face of obstacles that sometimes seem insurmountable.

My New Favorite Author
Revisado: 04-26-20
I just recently became aware of Dr. Gawande when a co-worker recommended that I read “Being Mortal.” I couldn’t put that book down, it was so engaging. I actually wanted it to have a book 2. I then went back to look for others and decided on “Better.” Except for the part on hand washing in hospitals by doctors/nurses and the rate of infections caused by those who don’t, most of the topics are those I had never given any thought to. I love that Dr. Gawande lays out some historical background on each topic and compares situations to how it is now. The section that I will ponder a long time is what it’s like to be a doctor in the poorer villages of India. Although he was truthful in what he saw, his writing had a way of focusing on how those doctors made do with what they had, and tried to do their best work.
I will continue to read Dr. Gawande’s books. As much as they give us his medical insights, his books are as much about the human condition.
