One of the greatest sci-fi novels of all time
Revisado: 04-21-25
An epic and emotionally gripping listen. Some top notch detail and world building combined with some truly amazing characters. The narration is incredible and perfect for this far reaching sci-fi adventure. Already a Dan Simmons fan, but I knew nothing about the Hyperion series. it was truly a great surprise as an audiobook and novel in itself!

Historia
The time is World War II. The place is a brutal prison camp deep in Japanese-occupied territory. Here, within the seething mass of humanity, one man, an American corporal, seeks dominance over both captives and captors alike. His weapons are human courage, unblinking understanding of human weaknesses, and total willingness to exploit every opportunity to enlarge his power and corrupt or destroy anyone who stands in his path.

An outstanding historical fiction!! With great narration!
Revisado: 12-04-24
Realistic portrayal of camp survival and the moral and class conflicts that erupt between the prisoners. All the characters are wonderfully fleshed out and believable. The narration is excellent and the multiple storylines of both the prisoners and their loved ones outside the conflict adds to the drama of survivors ordeal.

Historia
A serial murderer known only by a grotesquely apt nickname—Buffalo Bill—is stalking women. He has a purpose, but no one can fathom it, for the bodies are discovered in different states. Clarice Starling, a young trainee at the FBI Academy, is surprised to be summoned by Jack Crawford, chief of the Bureau's Behavioral Science section. Her assignment: to interview Dr. Hannibal Lecter—Hannibal the Cannibal—who is kept under close watch in the Baltimore State Hospital for the Criminally Insane.

Classic thriller with great narration!
Revisado: 08-28-24
Thomas Harris’s classic follow up to Red Dragon that meets or exceeds its predecessor in every way. The narration is perfect for the story and given the high expectations of the equally famous movie representation, is more than adequate.

Historia
In the late nineteenth century, people were obsessed by one of the last unmapped areas of the globe: The North Pole. No one knew what existed beyond the fortress of ice rimming the northern oceans. On July 8, 1879, the USS Jeannette set sail from San Francisco to cheering crowds in the grip of "Arctic Fever." The ship sailed into uncharted seas, but soon was trapped in pack ice. Two years into the harrowing voyage, the hull was breached. Amid the rush of water and the shrieks of breaking wooden boards, the crew abandoned the ship.

An amazing story of hardship and survival largely forgotten by American history
Revisado: 08-20-24
The story takes great pains to explain the thinking of the time-period of the expedition that made possible its impetus and ultimate failure. It is written in an impactful, and humanistic way that makes this forgotten piece of American/arctic exploration much more interesting than a simple historical retelling. The narrative is clear and befitting of the story.

A dated but still relevant take on the Israel/ Palestine conflict
Revisado: 05-14-24
Great on the ground perspective of the seemingly endless conflict that is the Middle East. If you are looking for a take on the origins of the conflict over Palestine and Israel, this is the listen for you. Great first person narrative interspersed with real quotes from all the major players of the time. Sadly the optimism at the end has been disproven from the last 30+ years of recent history.

Historia
America’s chaotic retreat from Afghanistan in 2021 was nothing short of a horror show. Women and children were trampled to death outside the gates of the Kabul airfield. Desperate Afghans fell from the landing gear of departing planes. Taliban fighters mercilessly whipped and humiliated U.S. civilians. Countless Afghan interpreters were abandoned to the mercy of the Taliban after risking their lives alongside American troops for years. And thirteen U.S. service members were murdered in an ISIS suicide bombing. Still, the full story is worse than anyone imagined.

A tragic retelling of an underreported moment in US and Afghanistan’s recent history
Revisado: 04-28-24
A haunting examination of the recent debacle that was the Afghanistan pullout. This particular listen has obvious political leanings. That being said, the disastrous results of the decisions made by 2 administrations speak for themselves and the consequences continue to reverberate.
