Historia
At the start of WWII, the U.S. found itself in desperate need of an intelligence agency. The Office of Strategic Services (OSS), a precursor to today’s CIA, was quickly formed—and, in an effort to fill its ranks with experts, the OSS turned to academia for recruits. Suddenly, literature professors, librarians, and historians were training to perform undercover operations and investigative work—and these surprising spies would go on to profoundly shape both the course of the war and our cultural institutions with their efforts.

Libraries!!! Winning!!!
Revisado: 03-06-25
As a lover of libraries, this is a great, and cautionary, tale about the importance of learning and libraries, especially during WWII. A fascinating take on the OSS, SOE, and the CIA. I am going to reread this book right now as it is so packed with information that I could only go down so many rabbit holes without interrupting the flow. I have been concentrating on WWII the last 9 months and have found this to be an excellent fit with a recent concentration on intelligence. Perhaps a second edition would have more on the Indo-Pacific theater and the contributions of more minorities (Coast watchers, etc.?).

Historia
In this gripping narrative, Ben Macintyre tackles one of the most famous prison stories in history and makes it utterly his own. During World War II, the German army used the towering Colditz Castle to hold the most defiant Allied prisoners. For four years, these prisoners of the castle tested its walls and its guards with ingenious escape attempts that would become legend. But as Macintyre shows, the story of Colditz was about much more than escape.

Better than the movie!
Revisado: 01-02-25
Thoroughly researched, many points of view, incredible sources. Interesting way to view the European Theater via the web of connections tying people and events together during the war. Ends with what happened to many of the main actors, good and bad. Connects Colditz to postwar Europe. An interesting microcosm of society at war. Deep diving into rabbit holes which I like. I rewatched the classic Colditz film before listening to this book. The book is better. Highly recommended.

Historia
Although most people associate the term D-day with the Normandy invasion on June 6, 1944, it is military code for the beginning of any offensive operation. In the Pacific theater during World War II there were more than one hundred D-days. The largest - and last - was the invasion of Okinawa on April 1, 1945, which brought together the biggest invasion fleet ever assembled, far larger than that engaged in the Normandy invasion. D-Days in the Pacific tells the epic story of the campaign waged by American forces to win back the Pacific islands from Japan.

Historia
Only days after the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, President Franklin D. Roosevelt tapped Chester W. Nimitz to assume command of the Pacific Fleet. Nimitz transformed the devastated and dispirited Pacific fleet into the most powerful and commanding naval force in history. Facing demands from Washington to mount an early offensive, he had first to revive the depressed morale of the thousands of sailors, soldiers, and Marines who served under him. And of course, he also confronted a formidable and implacable enemy in the Imperial Japanese Navy.

A Wild Ride!
Revisado: 02-16-24
Surprise ending, page turner, a solid “Sister” Jane home run. Interesting asides on natural history, fox hunting, current events, tobacco, and contraband support the narrative which continues to develop the Jefferson Hunt and surrounding community in the present and the past. On to the next in the series.

Historia
When the skeleton of Nola Bancroft, still wearing an exquisite sapphire ring on her finger, is unearthed, it brings back a 21-year-old mystery. Beautiful Nola was a girl who had more male admirers than her family had money, which was certainly quite a feat. In a world where a woman's ability to ride was considered one of her most important social graces, Nola was queen of the stable. She had a weakness for men, and her tastes often ventured toward the inappropriate, like the sheriff's striking son, Guy Ramy.

A fun rollick through hunt country
Revisado: 02-10-24
A beach read enjoyed by this former fox hunter. I just binge listened to two of Rita Mae Brown’s books on Audible and am about to start another. Ordinarily I read history and nonfiction books, but the winter doldrums made me turn to her welcome, fun, animal forward mysteries. I have read her Sister Jane and Sneaky Pie Brown mysteries for years, usually binging on 2 or 3 before returning to my usual reads. Entertaining, Recommended.

Through ancient art, evocative myth, exciting archaeological revelations and philosophical explorations Bettany Hughes shows why this immortal goddess endures through to the 21st century and what her journey through time reveals about what matters to us as humans. Charting Venus' origins in powerful ancient deities, Bettany demonstrates that Venus is far more complex than first meets the eye.

I will think about Greek and Roman gods and myths differently now, not as static things. I am not a historian, but I love to learn about history. Love the long looks back through a topic connected to a wider world that also bring one up to the present. I have enjoyed every show, book and now narration of hers. You had me at “Bettany Hughes.”
