Three Sweet Stories

Written so long ago, I was delighted that they held my interest and surprised that I enjoyed them so much. They were the perfect stories to listen to while falling asleep, or if I couldn't sleep. No wars, no politics, nothing complicated. Perfect for what I needed at the time.

I got this CD set probably 20 years ago and listened to it over and over again. This audiobook version is a bit different than that original CD set, it seems, I but I still love everything about it. Great mix of live and non-live essays. This was my introduction to David Sedaris oh so long ago and I have never looked back.

If it’s navel-gazing you’re after, you’ve come to the wrong place; ditto treacly self-examination. Rather, his observations turn outward: a fight between two men on a bus, a fight between two men on the street, pedestrians being whacked over the head or gathering to watch as a man considers leaping to his death. There’s a dirty joke shared at a book signing, then a dirtier one told at a dinner party - lots of jokes here. Plenty of laughs.

As with others, it's the narration

I love me some Tracey Ullman, but it was so strange to hear stories about David and his family (for example, Hugh, his dad, Tiffany) in Tracy's voice. I find her accents distracting. Maybe there was some other reason for her to take on half of the narration … maybe some health or scheduling problems with David. But it just doesn't work for me. I wish I had read the reviews before I had purchased; will try to return it now after listening to a couple hours of it. Sorry, David!!
