Historia
During the third week of February 1944, the combined Allied air forces based in Britain and Italy launched their first round-the-clock bomber offensive against Germany. Their goal: to smash the main factories and production centers of the Luftwaffe while also drawing German planes into an aerial battle of attrition to neutralize the Luftwaffe as a fighting force prior to the cross-channel invasion, planned for a few months later. Officially called Operation ARGUMENT, this aerial offensive quickly became known as “Big Week,” and it was one of the turning-points of World War II.

Historia
May 1940. Britain is at war, Winston Churchill has unexpectedly been promoted to prime minister, and the horrors of Blitzkrieg witness one Western European democracy fall after another in rapid succession. Facing this horror, with pen in hand and typist-secretary at the ready, Churchill wonders what words could capture the public mood when the invasion of Britain seems mere hours away. It is this fascinating period that Anthony McCarten captures in this deeply researched and wonderfully written new book, The Darkest Hour.

Historia
From July 10, 1943, the date of the Allied landing in Sicily, to May 8, 1945, when victory in Europe was declared - the entire time it took to liberate Europe - no regiment saw more action, and no single platoon, company, or battalion endured worse, than the ones commanded by Felix Sparks, who had entered the war as a greenhorn second lieutenant of the 157th "Eager for Duty" Infantry Regiment of the 45th "Thunderbird" Division. Sparks and his fellow Thunderbirds fought longest and hardest to defeat Hitler.

Revisado: 02-18-18
D-Day received all of the attention but... Sicily, Rome, southern France then northward to Dachau was a compelling tale and lead by a great human being and leader. No regrets about buying this excellent book. Well told by the narrator as well.

Historia
In Dead Presidents, NPR host Brady Carlson takes listeners to presidential gravesites, monuments, and memorials to tell the death stories of our greatest leaders. Mixing biography and travelogue, Carlson explores whether William Henry Harrison really died of a cold, why Zachary Taylor's remains were exhumed 140 years after his death, and how what killed James A. Garfield wasn't an assassin's bullet.

Takes a humorous and very factual look
Revisado: 07-23-16
Takes a humorous and very factual look at what one might assume is a morose topic. It is not. Nothing is overly critical nor glossed over. The delivery is "Just the facts, ma'am" but with a wink and a smile. A good choice for the narrator as well.
Very well researched by Brady Carlson and well worth the read.

If you like sub stories this is worth the read
Revisado: 06-29-08
Well paced, well written. Shocking... the way that in 1968 the Russians gave the US the deliberate combination of a sucker punch and a sniper's "head shot" to a fully crewed US NAVY nuclear sub that was simply going home after it's cruise. Perhaps that clear act of war was silenced because it might have caused the real thing to expand. Maybe the right decision, maybe not. You read and figure it out for yourself. A great read!
