For five grand a month and a million-dollar chaser, Roger Mulligan didn't care how crazy the old geezer was. All he had to do was keep Joseph Perry Shackleford alive and keep him from squandering the estate for a year. But they didn't tell him about the pixies.

I love this book! In my 67 years, this the only book I have ever re-read, so was very eager to listen to the audio version on my walks. It didn’t disappoint.
The narrator was excellent and pretty close to the voice that already lived in my head.
The story itself is fantasy-like but well told and doesn’t bog down and annoy me. Roger is a great character who clues in to who the bad guys and the good guys are, and immediately becomes Shackleford’s protector and advocate. I like him immensely.

Poor Narrator
Revisado: 03-26-19
Be aware! The narrator for this novel is NOT the same as Mr Churchill's Secretary. For some reason, Duerden's interpretation of Maggie was to give her a high-pitched baby voice. Not sure why but it was annoying. Duerden also has an irritating habit of stringing out the last sound of sentence. Straight forward reading would have made this book much more enjoyable.

Worth the time
Revisado: 09-08-17
What did you like about this audiobook?
I liked the characters and the narrator.
How has the book increased your interest in the subject matter?
.
Does the author present information in a way that is interesting and insightful, and if so, how does he achieve this?
.
What did you find wrong about the narrator's performance?
I didn't like the gruff voice she used for the primary male character; he came across mean and rude. I'm not sure what she could have done differently.
Do you have any additional comments?
Once the lead female met up with the lead male, and with all the side-long glances and innuendo, I was concerned this would turn in to a bodice ripper, but it didn't, which I appreciated. Veronica is a logical, smart, strong woman who knows her own mind, which I also appreciated.

Historia
Renée Ballard works the night shift in Hollywood, beginning many investigations but finishing none, as each morning she turns her cases over to day shift detectives. A once up-and-coming detective, she's been given this beat as punishment after filing a sexual harassment complaint against a supervisor. But one night she catches two cases she doesn't want to part with: the brutal beating of a prostitute left for dead in a parking lot and the killing of a young woman in a nightclub shooting. Ballard is determined not to give up at dawn.

Good listen
Revisado: 09-08-17
What made the experience of listening to The Late Show the most enjoyable?
I enjoyed the plot and liked the lead character
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Late Show?
The ending. I'm listening to the book again to see if I can pick up clues.
What does Katherine Moennig bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
I thought she did a credible job, but I was initially put off by her no-nonsense delivery. I was intrigued enough by the story itself to push past that and so eventually it didn't bother me.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
I liked Ballard's relationship with her dog.
Any additional comments?
I am a huge Michael Connelly fan and was not disappointed. I am hoping he continues this character in a series.

…If a kickass middle-aged bookkeeper got sucked into a spy's life… Despite her penchant for weapons and ripe language, Aydan Kelly's resumé reads 'bookkeeper', not 'badass'. She's leaving the city to fulfill her dream of rural tranquility when she gets carjacked by a man who shouldn't exist. When RCMP officer John Kane kills her would-be abductor, Aydan thinks her troubles are over. But Kane's investigation implicates her in an international espionage plot, and criminal charges become the least of her worries when she's targeted by the very spies Kane suspects her of aiding.

Meh
Revisado: 05-30-17
What would have made Never Say Spy better?
Better narrator. The plot was OK, but the narrator didn't carry off the male characters well. The hero, Kane, came off sounding annoyed with everyone and everything, while Hellhound sounded like he was from the backwoods of Kentucky. Her inflections were out of place also. The main character's sarcastic or flippant remarks fell flat.I spent a lot of time listening to the main character whine about being hungry and demanding to be fed. She also spent a lot of time doing "yoga breathing." Based on what was happening to her, the freaks out seemed inappropriate, while at other times, the fact that she wasn't seemed odd.
I know that there are people who are totally prepared for every eventuality, but between her ubiquitus backpack and waist pouch, she had everything covered from clothes to food, to tools. If she needed a three-sided, hexagon-shaped buber tuber lancing tool, voila! She had one. It's no wonder Kane didn't believe she was a spy.
It's an interesting plot and the author unfolded it well. I'm not sure if I'm willing to force my way through the narrator to listen to more of this series.
Would you be willing to try another book from Diane Henders? Why or why not?
Yes, but only if someone else reads the book.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
She couldn't act. If she'd just read the book without changing her voice for the different characters, it might have been better. In several places, her attempt at being flippant didn't work. I'm not even sure that's what the author intended because it seemed out of place.
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
The plot was interesting.

Everything starts somewhere. For elite military cop Jack Reacher, that somewhere was Carter Crossing, Mississippi, way back in 1997. A young woman is dead, and solid evidence points to a soldier at a nearby military base. But that soldier has powerful friends in Washington. Reacher is ordered undercover - to find out everything he can, to control the local police, and then to vanish. Reacher is a good soldier. But when he gets to Carter Crossing, he finds layers no one saw coming, and the investigation spins out of control.

A bit Windy
Revisado: 12-13-16
Is there anything you would change about this book?
Shorten the sex scenes. The first one was interminable. At a certain point, I hit +30 until it and the subsequent ones ended. Yeah, yeah, it was nice that Reacher got laid, but let's leave sex out in the future. Lee Child was also a bit long-winded in his description, and seemed to go on for minutes (or pages if I was reading a book) about nothing. I felt like he promised x number of words, but fell short and had to pad.
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
Surprising and typical. Reacher wins in the end.
Have you listened to any of Dick Hill’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
I am a huge Dick Hill fan. In this book, he seemed a bit flamboyant--probably because he had to read a lot of extraneous words...
Do you think The Affair needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
No

Surprisingly good
Revisado: 10-31-16
If you could sum up Ghostly Paws in three words, what would they be?
I was pleasantly surprised.
What other book might you compare Ghostly Paws to and why?
I rarely read cozy mysteries, so I can't say.
What does Elisabeth Rodgers bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Rodgers did a good job of narrating. She sounded like she'd already read the book and so made the appropriate choices. She sounded believable.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
No. It's a mystery novel. What's there to move?
Any additional comments?
Work was stressing me out and I wanted a brainless, simple book that required no thinking. I tried another cozy mystery and was sorely disappointed. (I returned it within an hour of buying it; I love audible's no fuss return policy btw.) Because of my previous experience that day, I started this with some trepidation but was pleasantly surprised by the narration and main character. The author revealed what I needed to know when I needed to know it and didn't stoop to ending every chapter with the cheap "she thought everything would be alright but did she turn out to be wrong" trick.
When Dobbs exposed Chance to the romantic "lead" she did so in ways that I found unexpected and entertaining. There was no bodice thrusting or breath heaving. It was so normal. I truly appreciated it.
Frankly, I was surprised I like this book because I tend toward more serious police procedurals. I will certainly listen to the next book in the series.

Good book; good narrator
Revisado: 10-31-16
Would you consider the audio edition of Memory Man to be better than the print version?
Wouldn't know; have not read the book nor do I intend to.
Have you listened to any of Ron McLarty and Orlagh Cassidy ’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
There were pieces of dialog that I felt Cassidy didn't capture well. Her tone and inflection were completely out of place. A few times, I felt her acting--especially when reading the female reporter. Cassidy did not do her well at all. There were numerous, numerous places where McLarty either misread a line or flubbed it, and it had to be re-recorded and edited in. Sadly, this was not done well. These jumps were a bit jarring and caused me to focus on it and miss what was read next. There were also times when I thought McLarty would run completely out of breath or would stop and gasp for air.
Overall, though, I like both of these narrators and their work made the listen entertaining.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
No.
Any additional comments?
I liked this book. I thought the plot was very interesting and it was a good story in which to introduce what I presume will be another series. I look forward to listening to more.

Excellent story, not no excellent narrator
Revisado: 06-23-16
I'm a huge fan, and have read Michaels'a books for years. I read this long ago and was eager to listen to the audio version. Unfortunately, the narration was difficult. I stopped and started several times before pushing through. The narration was flat and lifeless. Some lines were delivered so lifelessly that they sounded idiotic. Other parts were read so fast that I checked to see whether I had inadvertently increased the listening speed. Michael's writing is awesome and I will continue to listen to more of his books, but I will steer clear of this narrator.

This is NOT a Fairy Tale
Revisado: 11-02-15
What did you like best about Separation of Power? What did you like least?
The narrator is abysmal! I'm less than half-way and had to write a warning to future listeners. I should have checked the reviews before buying the book. I'm sure the plot is good, but geez!
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
Haven't finished the book yet.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
100%!!!! It's a huge struggle to listen. I may wind up reading the book rather than finish listening. It's almost as if he's trying to be whimsical. His pacing is terrible. He raising his voice at the end of statements. Irene Kennedy sounds like a cackling crone. Mitch engenders no sympathy at all. And the girlfriend comes across so much as a b**** that Mitch would be better to dump her. (Although, on this point the author carries some blame. I cannot believe that what's her name--Anna?--would be so naive to think that she has a right to know national security secrets just because she's the girlfriend. The scene where she's cajoling him after his initial interview with Irene was VERY irritating.)
Any additional comments?
Again, the narrator is completely unworthy.
