Johnny Cash was once asked what the best book for understanding the Country Music Industry was, and he suggested that this honor belonged to Tom T. Hall's "The Storyteller's Nashville" and it's tales of drunken poets, outlaws, and knife-fighters may certainly have presented an accurate image of the industry in the 60s and 70s. However, I believe this book may be the best for understanding the modern Country Music world as it describes how Nashville's Country has devolved into meaningless songs about trucks, flags, and girls while the true spirit of the genre has left Nashville to become Americana and Folk music in other parts of the world. In any case, it is a fantastically well written and intimate look at the life and career of Rosanne Cash.

Fans of Johnny Cash will not be disappointed as she spends the majority of the book discussing her and her father's relationship and the many ways he has influenced her. However, fans looking for stories about her collaborations and friendships with Bruce Springsteen, Stephen King, and others will certainly leave wanting more; and I- for one- really hope she does deliver a follow-up (something she hints at in this book).

She does an amazing job reading her book. 10/10 highly recommend.

In Which An Atheist Takes Issue With An Atheist

This book perfectly displays the good, the bad, and the ugly of atheist content.

The Good: The book is well articulated, presents reasonable evidence that religion is a by-product of evolution (the central idea of the text), and clearly explains why atheists are not bad people.

The Ugly: The title is extremely off-putting. This book is presented by Dawkins as an attempt to reach the theist and explain why he so passionately detests religion. That being the case, why give such a provocative title? He certainly never argues that the religious are deluded, so what gives? The title is basically click-bait before click-bait was a thing.

The Bad: There are two instances where Dawkins makes some extremely problematic remarks. First, in the introduction, he claims that atheists receive harsher treatment than members of the LGBTQIA+ Community. This would be an extremely unenlightened take today, but this book was published in the early 2000s- before President Obama legalized gay marriage in America. The idea that a group who is treated by the religious the same way all other religious apostates are treated is somehow worse off than a group that is villianized, harassed, and criminalized simply for existing is deeply disturbing. Second, in the chapter on children, he makes the claim- and trigger warning for anyone sensitive to the topic of violence against children- that the sexual misconduct of the Catholic Church against children is not as serious an offense as the catechism. He goes so far as to describe sexual assault as merely "embarrassing" and claims that we are getting too worked up about the issue. He even says that his sympathies lie with the pedophiles. Don't believe me? I wouldn't either, but feel free to fast forward to that chapter and listen for yourself.

He and the other narrator do a good job of reading the text, and- in many places- it is very engaging. However, the two upsetting sentiments listed above make it so that I cannot- in good conscious- recommend this book. For a better work on the same theme I highly recommend "God is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything" by Christopher Hitchens. It makes many of the same points, but recognizes that religion's mistreatment of minorities and children are far more serious crimes than it's mistreatment of atheists and apostates.

Great points- She's unequivocally correct in her argument.

Great Style- Great use of pathos.

Great Reading- Authors don't always do well reading their work, but I'm glad to report that this doesn't apply to her.

A fairly decent story that gets bogged down by cliches and an overtly preachy tone. If you want to know how much the author detests Black Metal and Paganism then this book is for you, but if you want a truly fantastic horror experience then watch the Netflix adaptation.

I found Sam Harris's "Letter to a Christian Nation" to be a decent and heartfelt approach to the often hard-to-discuss subject of religion. However, it is cynical of its opposition to the point of mockery. Thus, while claiming to want to reach across the aisle and invite rational theists to become rational atheists, it does so in a way that would only serve to repel most people who do not already agree with Harris's conclusion.

Furthermore, Harris claims to be addressing the failure of other books on atheism. He seems to think that he has presented new arguments and better tactics, but- simply put- Christopher Hitchens and Richard Dawkins both made the same or similar arguments in their books on atheism (Hitchens even did it better).

If you are already an atheist or a skeptic, and you want to read a well-reasoned essay on your position then this book is for you. However, if you want a truly heartfelt and good faith argument against religion read "God is Not Great" by Christopher Hitchens.
