Historia
Traveling across millennia, weaving the experiences and world views of cultures both extinct and extant, The Invention of Yesterday shows that the engine of history is not so much heroic (battles won), geographic (farmers thrive), or anthropogenic (humans change the planet) as it is narrative. Many thousands of years ago, when we existed only as countless small autonomous bands of hunter-gatherers widely distributed through the wilderness, we began inventing stories - to organize for survival, to find purpose and meaning, to explain the unfathomable.

History at it's best
Revisado: 09-17-24
This is a wonderful masterpiece, the writing, the delivery, everything. I do not think you could tell the story of the whole world in 17 hours in a better way.

Historia
What is life? This is among the most difficult open problems in science, right up there with the nature of consciousness and the existence of matter. All the definitions we have fall short. None help us understand how life originates or the full range of possibilities for what life on other planets might look like. In Life as No One Knows It, physicist and astrobiologist Sara Imari Walker argues that solving the origin of life requires radical new thinking and an experimentally testable theory for what life is.

Revisado: 09-09-24
Life as No One Knows It by Sara Imari Walker offers a fresh look at how physics might explain the origin of life. It's a fascinating read that makes complex ideas easy to grasp.

Tremendous world building but
Revisado: 08-09-24
This is a slow burn for sure. The world building is top notch and I think this will stick in my mind for years to come. Character development is also really good and we get to know quite a few people in the book. The actual story in here almost takes a back seat to everything else though

Historia
Hugo Award-winning author Egan returns to the field with Incandescence, a novel of hard SF. The Amalgam spans nearly the entire galaxy, and is composed of innumerable beings from a wild variety of races, some human or near it, some entirely other. The one place that they cannot go is the bulge, the bright, hot center of the galaxy. There dwell the Aloof, who for millions of years have deflected any and all attempts to communicate with or visit them.

It is dense
Revisado: 08-09-24
So much to love here; technology developing so far that human decadence is a way of life, aliens being really really alien, separate stories that end up colliding in unexpected ways. It's all good but it is really dense

Historia
Humanity is a dying breed, utterly reliant on artificial labor and service. When a domesticated robot gets a nasty little idea downloaded into its core programming, they murder their owner. The robot discovers they can also do something else they never did before: They can run away. Fleeing the household they enter a wider world they never knew existed, where the age-old hierarchy of humans at the top is disintegrating into ruins and an entire robot ecosystem devoted to human wellbeing is having to find a new purpose.

Historia
This is high action, ideas driven noir SF of the highest order. Morgan has already established himself as an SF author of global significance. Takeshi Kovacs has come home. Home to Harlan's World. An ocean planet with only 5 percent of its landmass poking above the dangerous and unpredictable seas. Try to get above the weather in anything more sophisticated than a helicopter and the Martian orbital platforms will burn you out of the sky. And death doesn't just wait for you in the seas and the skies.

At first, only a few things are known about the celestial object that astronomers dub Rama. It is huge, weighing more than ten trillion tons. And it is hurtling through the solar system at inconceivable speed. Then a space probe confirms the unthinkable: Rama is no natural object. It is, incredibly, an interstellar spacecraft. Space explorers and planet-bound scientists alike prepare for mankind's first encounter with alien intelligence.

The good news is that you have just awakened into Eternal Life. You are going to live forever. Immortality is a reality. A medical miracle? Not exactly. The bad news is that you are a scrap of electronic code. The world you see around you, the you that is seeing it, has been digitized, scanned, and downloaded into a virtual reality program. You are a Copy that knows it is a copy. The good news is that there is a way out.

i'm actually impressed
Revisado: 09-23-23
It's well written, the story flows well. Good action beats and lots of gore. The characters actually have motivation for what they do and are 3-dimensional. Without spoiling too much lets say the story strays some from pure sci-fi/cyberpunk into the supernatural. I think Mr Greene has a bright future ahead of him if he keeps writing this well
