Historia
At 36, Hope McKenna-Smith is no stranger to bad news. She lost her mother to cancer, her husband left her for a 22-year-old, and her bank account is nearly depleted. Now, Hope’s beloved French-born grandmother Mamie, who wowed the Cape with her fabulous pastries for more than 50 years, is drifting away into a haze of Alzheimer’s. But in a rare moment of clarity, Mamie realizes that unless she tells Hope about the past, the secrets she has held on to for so many years will soon be lost forever. Arming her with a scrawled list of names, she sends Hope to France.

Beautiful Story
Revisado: 01-16-24
I love Kristin Harmel’s writing and her female main characters who grow, no matter the age.
I wasn’t thrilled with the narrator when she tried to do foreign accents. They were inconsistent and incorrect e,g. a British accent for a French person? Otherwise Narrator did a nice job with the American accent, capturing the characters of Hope and Annie very well.

Slow and Ploddy

This version is really slow and hard to follow. I gave it 2 hours at 1.2 speed but am giving up.

Historia
From the New York Times best-selling authors of America's First Daughter comes the epic story of Eliza Schuyler Hamilton - a revolutionary woman who, like her new nation, struggled to define herself in the wake of war, betrayal, and tragedy. In this haunting, moving, and beautifully written book, Dray and Kamoie used thousands of letters and original sources to tell Eliza's story as it's never been told before - not just as the wronged wife at the center of a political sex scandal but also as a founding mother who shaped an American legacy in her own right.

I saw this title and thought it would be a good introduction to the historical character of Hamilton. Thoroughly enjoyed the story from Eliza’s viewpoint. Well worth the listen.

Wish I could have known Sara Tuvel
Revisado: 05-10-19
What a powerful story of survival and recovery. I was completely captivated by both the story and the performance. I’ve read and seen so much about Nazi Germany and the death camps, but had not been exposed to the plight of the Jews in Transylvania. I’m so glad Sara’s story was told for all of us to read and hear.

Historia
This work is a full blooded Victorian, sensationalistic melodrama! Murder, arson, blackmail, bigamy; not many ingredients are missing in this entertaining piece. The story is fast-paced and the main character, Lady Audley, is a refreshingly manipulative and resourceful villainess filled with passion and desires that threatened the male dominated Victorian era.

Great plot captures from beginning
Revisado: 03-28-19
I loved the story and slow build of characters and very satisfying ending. I should have listened to some of the performer options before buying. Book really needs a British accent for the narration. Reader pronounced “Don Juan” as “Don Jue-Ahn”, and a few other mispronunciations not quite as glaring. Still enjoyable over all.

Not a story of revenge, but self-discovery and generosity
Revisado: 09-29-17
I read this book for the first time over 30 years ago. Since then I've watched the movie adaptations. But after listening to this amazing unabridged version, I realize the films only address a small fraction of the complexity and depth of the story and characters of the "Count of Monte Cristo".
The Count's journey from fresh, honest and naive young man, to one who is mature, wise and self-aware, is powerful and moving.
An amazing story, and an incredible interpretation by the narrator.
