Historia
Behind the stage lights and word-perfect soliloquies, sinister secrets are lurking in the wings. The mysteries in this collection reveal the dark side to theatre and performing arts: a world of backstage dealings, where unscrupulous actors risk everything to land a starring role, costumed figures lead to mistaken identities, and on-stage deaths begin to look a little too convincing. This expertly curated thespian anthology features 14 stories from giants of the classic crime genre.

A Mix Bag
Revisado: 11-19-23
A real collection of hits and misses in this collection, I didn't pausing to rate each story individually so decided to round it off at 3 stars overall.
I'm not sure I'll be listening right through this one again, but I was pleased to discovered new, to me, short stories from Ngaio Marsh, Dorothy Sayers, and, Christiana Brand this listen through.

World and Character building book
Revisado: 06-19-23
This first book is definitely required, lures you in too, before listening to other titles in the series.
I downloaded this to try as Gildart Jackson is one of my favourite narrators, and, it was a free listen.
Extra details for others who like to know:
A medieval based, dark fantasy, wrapping around a demon or two, who are obviously anti God, and the humans they control or inhabit.
Lots of cursing and swearing, no F.bombs.
Quite violent in parts.
Child abuse.

A mystery that isn’t resolved
Revisado: 02-07-23
I was enjoying this mystery until I got to the end.
I guess the author wants readers to purchase their next book to find out the resolution to who is the person that has the cross.
Odd ending.

Life from an emotional abuser's viewpoint
Revisado: 09-12-21
Not sure if Joan is a narcissistic manipulator or delusional and manipulative.
The "perfect book" (sarcasm intended) when you what to view life from an emotional abuser's viewpoint and listen to lies she tells herself.
I wished that Christie could have gifted us with a different outcome..... can't add more without adding spoilers.

Historia
Beautiful young Elinor Carlisle stands serenely in the dock, accused of the murder of Mary Gerrard, her rival in love. The evidence is damning: only Elinor had the motive, the opportunity, and the means to administer the fatal poison. Yet, inside the hostile courtroom, one man still presumes Elinor is innocent until proven guilty: Hercule Poirot, who is all that stands between Elinor and the gallows.

Hercule Poirot reads!
Revisado: 07-31-21
The story is a repeat-listen, the narrator is new. David Suchet makes this an absolute pleasure to listen to… well, apart from his attempt at a Kiwi accent (:D he sounded more like an Aussie).
The mystery is good, I couldn’t remember whodunit and didn’t manage to figure it out until a good chunk of the way through the book. As an aside, what on earth attracted Elinor to Roddy beats me, no wonder Mary didn’t want him.

Gentle reading from an era long gone
Revisado: 04-21-21
"Bel Lamington" - that is the girl's name and has nothing to do with sponge cake cut into squares dipped in chocolate icing and rolled in coconut - helped make a mundane task I was needing to complete so much more enjoyable.
While Bel is not my favourite D.E. Stevenson character, she's not too sappy and has moments of spunk. I liked Bel more than her bossy, knows-what-is-best-for-everyone, friend Louise. I'm so thankful that the Aunt that raised her was loving and loved by Bel in return.
This book is a perfect follow on after book three, "Winter and Rough Weather", in the Drumberley/Dering series. I enjoyed catching up with Mamie and Jock Johnstone, and, James and Rhoda Dering.

Historia
The remarkable double life of an American-turned-British spy, Virginia Hall, a 'bolshie' woman from Maryland who, determined to overcome a physical disability that threatened to define her life, successfully infiltrated Vichy France for England's SOE before America's entry into WWII and then, three years later, for the SOS, providing crucial intelligence and logistics for the mounting French Resistance and, later, Allied troops.

Perfect narration
Revisado: 04-21-21
I was familiar with Virginia Hall ( & Noor Kahn) having read Sarah Helm's book "A Life in Secrets: Vera Atkins and the Missing Agents of WWII" in 2016.
I enjoyed getting to hear a much fuller account of her courage during WW11, and then her life after the war. To have given so much during the war and then to be side-lined afterwards must have been so hard .... and to have your mother not give her O.K. for you to marry the man you've been living together with off-and-on for years, until you're in your fifties.
This is the kind of book that encourages me to want to do more study about the character.

It’s so nice to see Maisie finally getting a break in her personal life, for the good...... though how long it’s going to last with an ending like that, only the author knows.
Extra: alcoholism, domestic violence, Down’s syndrome discussed (favourably).

(increasing the speed to 1.4X made for better listening).
I definitely want to hear more in this series: easy listening, with an interesting mystery; and, thankfully no women are subjected to brutal misconduct after they are kidnapped. (Lillie is a liberated woman in her era, which I thought would have attracted more animosity. )
I wonder if Daniel will show up again, somewhere, in a later story?
Extra: Some cursing and using God's name as an expletive. No f-bombs. Abandoned children, orphans, a policeman has O.C.D.

I managed to listen to half of the story thanks to the gifted narrator. The story is overdramatic, like a Barbara Cartland, so I ditched it.
