A Very Good Listen
Revisado: 04-17-25
Maberry and Porter are always a winning combination. I enjoyed every minute.
My only complaint is I thought this was the third book of a trilogy, and expected it to take up where the last book left off. It didn’t. Book two kind of left the reader hanging. This book takes up several months after. It sort of gives you ideas of what happened, but I wish there had been a proper book 3, and then this book as an addition to those. This is a very good book though.

Historia
Tucked away in the foothills, surrounded by pine forests, loaded with kids who still play outside, Millwood is the small town everyone knows. For Heather Bradley, it's a place that keeps her family safe; her biggest worries are the daily grind of her job and the kids coming home late. She doesn't know that unfathomable forces are set to converge on her town and thrust their neat lives into darkness, but when her oldest son Stuart opens a one-sided door in the woods and a black cloud pours out, the Bradleys and their whole town find themselves locked in a desperate struggle for survival.

Hard to follow
Revisado: 02-13-25
I did not enjoy this book. I felt the majority of scenes in the book went on far too long and got to be very rambling. There were a few good parts toward the end. The narrator often put pauses in the wrong place, making it even harder to follow.
I think the premise of the story is very good, it was just not executed well.

Wasn’t sure what to expect but was pleasantly surprised once done. Both the story and the narration were well done. I wonder if Pink Floyd’s The Wall was influenced by this book.

Historia
Ashley Perrin is fresh out of college and starting a job as a community liaison for the Third District–the city’s only sector with more alien residents than humans. Ashley’s barely found where the paper clips are kept when she’s beset with constituent complaints–from too much noise at the Annual Lupidian Celebration Parade to a trip-and-fall chicken to a very particular type of alien hornet that threatens the very city itself. And if that’s not terrifying enough, Ashley is next up at the office karaoke night.

Historia
Springerville is famous for the legend of the Mongolian Monster. Of course nobody really believes it. It’s just a good campfire story, something to attract gullible tourists until an excavation team unearths the figurine of a screaming woman, the jawbone of a deformed animal, and a child’s toy. How odd that they were buried together. Odd, too, is the foul odor lingering in the air, the strange noises at night, and the man’s face found hanging from a tree. Now the locals are locking their doors. Because after sundown, campfire stories can seem very, very real.

Not my fav from this author
Revisado: 10-10-24
I found the book rambling and often hard to follow.
I also didn’t like a lot of the pure gore, on animals and children.
I think this will be my last purchase from this author.

Historia
In the year 2243, the Moon belongs to the dead. The largest graveyard in the solar system, it was the perfect solution to the overcrowding and environmental problems that had plagued mankind for centuries. And the perfect place for Cali Washington to run away from her past. But when a mysterious meteor crashes into one of the Moon’s cemeteries, Cali and her fellow Caretakers find themselves surrounded by a terrifying enemy force that outnumbers them more than a thousand to one. Not as good as expected
Revisado: 08-26-24
I’m a fan of Peter Clines and have enjoyed many of his books.
I’ve listened to all the other books in this series and therefore had a level of expectation going in.
I had trouble with the first half of the book. I just couldn’t seem to connect with the main characters, or figure out the plot, and kept having to rewind as my mind was wandering.
The second half was better, but seemed like about the time I really started liking the main characters, the book was over.
IMO not his best work, but worth a listen if you find it on sale.

Historia
In the middle of the night, in a house on a quiet street in suburban Minneapolis, intruders silently murder Luke Ellis' parents and load him into a black SUV. The operation takes less than two minutes. Luke will wake up at The Institute, in a room that looks just like his own, except there's no window. And outside his door are other doors, behind which are other kids with special talents - telekinesis and telepathy - who got to this place the same way Luke did: Kalisha, Nick, George, Iris, and 10-year-old Avery Dixon.

Endurance Test
Revisado: 08-17-24
This book was like walking through quicksand. At one point I decided to finish the book, out of pure determination.
Sure, there were some good parts, but the road to those tidbits is long and straight through a desert of repetitive description.
The ending was disappointing and reminded me of a movie I saw back in the 90’s.
Everything was wrapped up and tied with a bow at the end, not long after SK managed to work in a couple political jabs… Apparently that’s important to him, but as a reader it seems pretty self serving and will date the book later on.
I had this book on my wish list for over a year. I should have left it there.
