Historia
When retired math teacher Grace Winters is left a run-down house on a Mediterranean island by a long-lost friend, curiosity gets the better of her. She arrives in Ibiza with a one-way ticket, no guidebook and no plan. Among the rugged hills and golden beaches of the island, Grace searches for answers about her friend’s life, and how it ended. What she uncovers is stranger than she could have dreamed. But to dive into this impossible truth, Grace must first come to terms with her past.

The above would be a more apt title. Only the last chapter really talks about the vanishing which was the main reason I bought the book. Perhaps this is the publishers fault. My understanding is they are largely responsible for titles. Now maybe this is just personal preference. If you’re a detail person, the kind of person who liked memorizing sports statistics as a kid, for example, this might be the perfect book for you.

Lots of mispronounced words
Revisado: 09-26-24
Perhaps I’m too harsh. I might’ve liked this book better if I hadn’t already been familiar with many of the concepts. I continue to be puzzled by audiobooks with lots of mispronunciations. Doesn’t anybody listen to these things before they put them out for the public?

Historia
The 2016 election was a watershed for the United States. But, as Tim Alberta explains in American Carnage, to understand Trump’s victory is to view him not as the creator of this era of polarization and bruising partisanship, but rather as its most manifest consequence. American Carnage is the story of a president’s rise based on a country’s evolution and a party’s collapse. As George W. Bush left office with record-low approval ratings and Barack Obama led a Democratic takeover of Washington, Republicans faced a moment of reckoning.

Too much detail not enough big picture
Revisado: 07-13-24
If you love details this book is for you. It’s basically a blow by blow description of recent political machinations in Washington . I tend to be a big picture person rather than a detail person so maybe my review is unfair for those who are detail people. it’s probably good from the standpoint of providing historical record.

Historia
Historic levels of polarization, a disaffected and frustrated electorate, and widespread distrust of government, the news media, and traditional political leadership set the stage in 2016 for an unexpected, unlikely, and unprecedented presidential contest. Donald Trump’s campaign speeches and other rhetoric seemed on the surface to be simplistic, repetitive, and disorganized to many. As Demagogue for President shows, Trump’s campaign strategy was anything but simple.

Only partly about rhetoric
Revisado: 04-03-24
The non-rhetorical parts of the book I could do without. It would’ve been nice, for example, if there was more about rhetorical techniques the Democrats could employ. Concerning the non-rhetorical parts, I wish I were smart enough to figure out how to fix the problems the author addresses but if her solution is everybody getting better at critical thinking, we’re probably all in trouble. While Trump moved things along considerably, years of divisive tactics employed by minions of the ultrawealthy for their own gain made Trump possible. Ditto, for those in power who ignored the interests and concerns of what became Trump’s base.

All while prosecutors and regulators stand idly by.

This book is necessary in a similar way to the way exercise or medicine is necessary. The country would be better off if everyone knew about the information in here; however, it is probably too complicated for many and won’t keep even more people’s interest.

The protagonist lived in a very different world than most people. If it’s true that truth is stranger than fiction, then maybe we get some insight into the different parts of reality that other people inhabit. I don’t rave about everything. I only give a couple of five stars per year.

Historia
Why Jazz Happened is the first comprehensive social history of jazz. It provides an intimate and compelling look at the many forces that shaped this most American of art forms and the many influences that gave rise to jazz’s post-war styles. Rich with the voices of musicians, producers, promoters, and others on the scene during the decades following World War II, this book views jazz’s evolution through the prism of technological advances, social transformations, changes in the law, economic trends, and much more.

Good book, misleading title
Revisado: 02-05-24
It’s an interesting book and contains material I have not come across elsewhere. it could perhaps more accurately be described as: The commercial aspects of jazz from swing to fusion. For example, there is extensive treatment of the recording industry and the musicians union but early jazz such as New Orleans, stride and ragtime are not really discussed; except that the first jazz recording is discussed in some detail. Bob Dylan is discussed a bit but I don’t recall him ever mentioning Buddy Bolden.

Historia
In Tom Wolfe's hands, the strange saga of American architecture in the 20th century makes for both high comedy and intellectual excitement. This is his sequel to The Painted Word, the book that caused such a furor in the art world five years before. Once again Wolfe shows how social and intellectual fashions have determined aesthetic form in our time and how willingly the creators have abandoned personal vision and originality in order to work a la mode.

Bad narration good book
Revisado: 01-24-24
Tim Wolfe is always a good antidote to dogmatic thinking and paying too much attention to “experts“ in non-objective fields. While the nuts and bolts of architecture is certainly objective, the aesthetics are not. Many mispronounced words. don’t publishers ever check this stuff?

Historia
Two decades into the twenty-first century, the stagnation of living standards has become the defining trend of American life. Life expectancy has declined, economic inequality has soared, and, after some progress, the Black-white wage gap is once again as large as it was in the 1950s. How did this happen in the world’s most powerful country? And what happened to the “American dream”—the promise of a happier, healthier, more prosperous future—which was once such an inextricable part of our national identity?

I give very few five stars
Revisado: 01-22-24
Superior book, I give maybe one five star rating every two or three years. Bad narration though. The reader mispronounces a number of words I assumed all educated people were familiar with. Doesn’t anybody ever check these things?
Here’s a gross oversimplification of the book. The far left has become obsessed with identity politics and virtue signaling at the expense of economic issues and winning elections. Economics is not unimportant to those the identity politics warriors profess to be in favor of helping. So if they really believed the things they claim, they wouldn’t ignore the issues in this book. it’s not a page turner but the ideas are extremely important.
