Historia
Two-thirds of us have experienced at least one adverse childhood experience, or ACE, such as abuse, neglect, parental substance dependence, or mental illness. Even though these events may have occurred long ago, they have the power to haunt us long into adulthood, and now we have found that they may even contribute to lifelong illness. Dr. Nadine Burke Harris, the founder/CEO of the Center for Youth Wellness and recipient of the Arnold P. Gold Foundation Humanism in Medicine Award, expands on similar topics as in her popular TED talk.

Excellent Thought Experiment - With politics.
Revisado: 04-22-25
Interesting hypothesis and presentation of evidence. Unfortunately, it’s diluted by “girl power,” identity politics, and fawning for Kamala Harris. That clouds the otherwise engaging material and presentation.

Historia
Talking about death and dying is considered taboo in polite company, and even in the medical field. Our ideas about dying are confusing at best: Will our memories flash before our eyes? Regrets consume our thoughts? Does a bright light appear at the end of a tunnel? For most people, it will be a slower process, one eased with preparedness, good humor, and a bit of faith. At the forefront of changing attitudes around palliative care is hospice nurse Hadley Vlahos, who shows that end-of-life care can teach us just as much about how to live as it does about how we die.

A single mother’s autobiography
Revisado: 09-17-23
This book was 10% about the patients and 90% about the author. The majority of this book is about the author’s struggle with being a single mom with an eating disorder. Overall, great performance, but seriously lacking substance.

Overall Useful Advice
Revisado: 09-10-23
Some very good nuggets of info broken down into easy to remember phrases. On par with other similar books. The inter-chapter music is distracting and much louder than the spoken words.

Historia
The father of three sons, a journalist, and a Brookings Institution scholar, Richard V. Reeves has spent twenty-five years worrying about boys both at home and work. His new book, Of Boys and Men, tackles the complex and urgent crisis of boyhood and manhood. Reeves looks at the structural challenges that face boys and men and offers fresh and innovative solutions that turn the page on the corrosive narrative that plagues this issue. Of Boys and Men argues that helping the other half of society does not mean giving up on the ideal of gender equality.

Misguided attempt to expand on Warren Ferrell
Revisado: 06-01-23
There’s nothing interesting or novel about this take. The author rehashes the points better expressed by Warren Ferrell in “The Boy Crisis.”
As a self-described “policy wonk,” the author wishes to socially experiment with men’s outcomes by spending billions of dollars and tinkering with policy levers. Chapters are wasted on the author’s social engineering fantasies.
There’s no discussion of the collapse of culture or the possibility that men are making rational choices by abstaining from schools, professions, and groups that castigate or villainize them.
There’s also a heavy emphasis on class, race, and group identity. It’s superfluous and an unnecessary distraction.
Overall, despite the presentation of accurate information, this is an underwhelming attempt to address cultural rot with political fiddling.

Historia
What is the boy crisis? It's a crisis of education. For the first time in American history, our sons will have less education than their dads. It's a crisis of mental health. As boys become young men, their suicide rates go from equal to girls to six times that of young women. It's a crisis of sexuality. Sex is a minefield for our sons. They're bombarded with mixed messages, afraid of being either too sensitive or not sensitive enough.

Great points and a discussion worth having. There’s a lot of liberalism and SJW nonsense sprinkled in throughout that diminishes the impact of the material.

Interesting, but misses the point.
Revisado: 08-30-22
The last two years has shown us why we should doubt the authenticity of medical experts and why we should challenge the medical narrative. The author presents fascinating studies, but as an an Atheist, he misses the importance of spirituality. He instead offers a collectivist narrative.
Hard to set aside his collectivism, political jabs, and identity politics. So many excellent points ruined by economic and spiritual illiteracy.

Revisado: 07-28-21
The story itself is gripping and exceptionally well-written. That said, the book stalls in the middle and the ending leaves a lot to be desired. There's no finality or resolution. The end is underwhelming, but the book is well worth the read.

The Founding Fathers tried to protect us from the threat they knew, the tyranny that overcame ancient democracy. Today, our political order faces new threats, not unlike the totalitarianism of the twentieth century. We are no wiser than the Europeans who saw democracy yield to fascism, Nazism, or communism. Our one advantage is that we might learn from their experience.

Historia
There are stacks upon stacks of self-help books that will promise you love, happiness, and a fabulous life. But how can you pinpoint the exact behaviors that cause you to be miserable in the first place? Sometimes when we're depressed, or just sad or unhappy, our instincts tell us to do the opposite of what we should - such as focusing on the negative, dwelling on what we can't change, isolating ourselves from friends and loved ones, eating junk food, or overindulging in alcohol. Sound familiar?
