Historia
Who is Audrey Hoedemaker? It's a question her sister Maureen has heard more times than she can count, and she doesn't know what the short answer would be. Little sister, troubled teen, backpacker, musical theatre coach, con artist, childcare worker. Murderer. A tragic, traumatic childhood casts a long shadow on the Hoedemaker sisters. Maureen has worked hard to move beyond the violence of the past and build a good, honest life for herself. Audrey, however, just can't seem to do the same, careening from one state of chaos to another.

Trigger Warning
Revisado: 01-03-25
I didn't know that there would be so many triggers in this book (child abuse, sexual violence), but I thought these topics were handled so well, and with so much compassion, that I was able to continue listening. All the way to the surprising end, that I did not see coming! Loved it!

Many mind blown moments
Revisado: 05-27-24
I've listened to so many suspense novels that I almost always can guess the entire plot from 1/4 way through the book. This one was different. It was smart, it was funny, it had so many twists and turns, and ultimately, it was about love. Highly recommend!

The first half was great, the second half was blah
Revisado: 12-26-23
I found the book really repetitive. The descriptions used to describe the characters and events, and the thoughts the characters had all seemed to be doubled and tripled, sometimes in the same chapter. I feel like 2 hours could have been shaved off from just that. Also, the narrator's voice was irritating as all of her sentences ended in up tone.
I guessed who the criminal was pretty early on, but it didn't detract from the story. I liked the bond between the sisters and the part the dog played in the story.
Overall, it was a decent book. An easy, quick listen.

Robotic Narrator, but Great Information
Revisado: 12-28-22
I learned most of this in school, but this was a great refresher course! Unfortunately, the voice of the Narrator was dull and robotic. The sheer amount of quotes used in the writing was frustrating as well. But the information was concise and hard-hitting. More people need to read this, regardless of their political leanings.

Funny, Tragic, Raw
Revisado: 12-28-22
I had to listen on 1.25 and at that speed, Matthew Perry sounded like Chandler Bing.
It was an honest look at his life and his addiction. I truly appreciated his insight, self-reflection, and self-acceptance of his addiction, as well as how he portrayed 12-step fellowships.
I could have done without the multiple references to how Friends was the greatest show on earth. It was a great show and its ratings were great, but it became tiresome after the 400th time he said it. Other than that, I appreciated the book.
It just goes to show, no matter how much money and fame you have, addiction affects everyone the same. You can't pull a "geographic" to get out of it. You have to work through it.

Historia
Experience a bold take on this classic autobiography as it’s performed by Oscar-nominated Laurence Fishburne. In this searing classic autobiography, originally published in 1965, Malcolm X, the Muslim leader, firebrand, and Black empowerment activist, tells the extraordinary story of his life and the growth of the Human Rights movement. His fascinating perspective on the lies and limitations of the American dream and the inherent racism in a society that denies its non-White citizens the opportunity to dream, gives extraordinary insight into the most urgent issues of our own time.

A Must Read
Revisado: 09-28-22
Laurence Fishburne was excellent as Malcolm X.
The beginning of his story was engaging and I listened through it very quickly. I had to keep reminding myself that it happened almost 100 years ago.
Then came his prison years and conversion to Islam. It was harder to listen to as the overwhelming theme was how white people are the devil. But it helped make sense of why so many Black men find Islam through hard times and jail times and why they are attracted to that message. And a part of me wonders if Narcotics Anonymous might be partially influenced by the beliefs and traditions of Islam.
The third part of the book was about his falling out with the organization he helped build, and his spiritual movement towards the Islamic religion of the rest of the world. His views evolved throughout the book.
A common thread throughout his life story was his hatred of conservatives (wolves) AND liberals (foxes). This could apply to politics today!!!
I had heard so many characterizations of Malcolm X and I wanted to learn and understand for myself. I'm glad I did! This one book gave me insight into the mindset of African Americans today and how to be a true ally. This should be a required read in high schools across America!

I didn't want it to end.
Revisado: 03-05-22
Though I enjoyed the music of RHCP as a teenager, I knew nothing about Flea. I now feel like I have a personal relationship with him. His telling of his story was so poignant, so HUMAN, so beautiful. He made me laugh out loud and sob uncontrollably.
It's obvious how well-read he is by his poetic description of his experiences, and his passion for music shines through. When he remembered friends he lost, and got choked up in the memory, I could feel his pain. When he talked about the madness of drug use, I could feel that too.
Though this book had its dark moments, like every memoir does, it was ultimately a book about finding yourself and loving yourself; it was a story of hope. I highly recommend it.

This story was daring, provocative, and dramatic. I loved it so much! If you're into serious literature, this isn't it. But if you love a good scandal, a juicy story, and a surprise that's believable, this is the book for you. The last line of the book had me cheering. I highly recommend it!
