Weekly reminder that art is worth the time.
Revisado: 03-11-23
With no art people left in my circles, I was looking for a podcast to supplement that. This fits the bill nicely. 2 guys having authentic conversations that reinforce the importance of taking in, thinking about, talking about and making art.
Bonus fun looking up all the works & creators referenced.

Historia
Three years after the epic adventure described in Around the World in 80 Days, Michael Palin was off again. Not circumnavigating the globe, but journeying from one end to the other: the North Pole to the South Pole. Following the 30 degree east line of longitude and using aircraft only as a last resort, Palin and his team endured extremes of heat and cold as they crossed 17 countries on trains, trucks, ships, rafts, ski-doos, buses, barges, bicycles, and balloons.

Historia
Packed with "compelling inside stories" (Chicago Tribune), Teammate is the inspiring memoir from "Grandpa Rossy", the veteran catcher who became the heart and soul of the 2016 Chicago Cubs championship team and was named manager in 2019. In 2016 the Cubs snapped a 108-year curse, winning the World Series in a history-making, seven-game series against the Cleveland Indians. Of the many storylines to Chicago's fairytale season, one stood out: The late-career renaissance of David Ross, the 39-year-old catcher who had played back-up for 13 of his 15 pro seasons.

Lots of unnecessary jokes in there that made it sound like it wasn't Ross' words. But the stories were great and I got to learn more about the inner workings of baseball.

Historia
Of all of John Irving's books, this is the one that lends itself best to audio. In print, Owen Meany's dialogue is set in capital letters; for this production, Irving himself selected Joe Barrett to deliver Meany's difficult voice as intended. In the summer of 1953, two 11-year-old boys – best friends – are playing in a Little League baseball game in Gravesend, New Hampshire. One of the boys hits a foul ball that kills the other boy's mother. The boy who hits the ball doesn't believe in accidents; Owen Meany believes he is God's instrument. What happens to Owen after that 1953 foul ball is extraordinary and terrifying.

Historia
A gargantuan, mind-altering comedy about the Pursuit of Happiness in America set in an addicts' halfway house and a tennis academy, and featuring the most endearingly screwed-up family to come along in recent fiction, Infinite Jest explores essential questions about what entertainment is and why it has come to so dominate our lives; about how our desire for entertainment affects our need to connect with other people; and about what the pleasures we choose say about who we are.

Best narration I've heard
Revisado: 06-22-21
Took me a few tries to finish this one. When I read it with the end in mind, I can't get through. But just enjoying it paragraph by paragraph made me want it to keep going for another couple years. Very funny, very descriptive, very interesting, and a writing style so unique I think I could pick it out of a lineup of a million. Such a good book, and the narration is better than any of the hundreds of audio books I've listened to.

Historia
In The H-Spot, Filipovic argues that the main obstacle standing in between women and happiness is a rigged system. In this world of unfinished feminism, men have long been able to "have it all" because of free female labor while the bar of achievement for women has only gotten higher. Never before have women at every economic level had to work so much (whether it's to be an accomplished white-collar employee or just make ends meet). Never before have the standards of feminine perfection been so high.

Bias Challenging and Interestingly Biased
Revisado: 01-14-20
Parts of this book forced me to question long held ideas, and others made me wish I could ask follow up questions if the author. I wonder if there were sources in the paper copy of the book. Lots of hearsay and small sample size, in addition to unsourced (in the audio book) research.

Great for coaches and players
Revisado: 01-10-20
As a fan, not a coach or player, this book wasn't written for me. But it's essentially a self-improvement book for players and coaches. With ideas that could be attributed to probably any stressful job - or just life.
Honestly, the only thing I wish this book had (besides juicy baseball gossip) is a stronger leaning towards applying the practices in it towards life. - Though there is a clear understanding that they would ask that too.

Historia
The 2018 season was a coronation for the Boston Red Sox. The best team in Major League Baseball - indeed, one of the best teams ever - the Sox won 108 regular season games and then romped through the postseason, going 11-3 against the three next-strongest teams baseball had to offer. As Alex Speier reveals, the Sox’ success wasn’t a fluke - nor was it guaranteed. It was the result of careful, patient planning and shrewd decision-making that allowed Boston to develop a golden generation of prospects - and then build upon that talented core to assemble a juggernaut.

Would probably be best for a Red Sox fan who is becoming a die hard fan 10+ years from now. For a 10 hour book, I heard very little that I hadn't heard in news coverage and in other books.

Historia
After twenty consecutive losing seasons for the Pittsburgh Pirates, team morale was low, the club’s payroll ranked near the bottom of the sport, game attendance was down, and the city was becoming increasingly disenchanted with its team. Big Data Baseball is the story of how the 2013 Pirates, mired in the longest losing streak in North American pro sports history, adopted drastic big-data strategies to end the drought, make the playoffs, and turn around the franchise’s fortunes.
