Last year I read Dorothy Day: Dissenting Voice of the American Century and got a lot out of it. This book by Coles was a next step, a deeper look into her thoughts and feelings. The way it was written in her voice, interview style, was very helpful and perfect for an audiobook. The narrator was excellent, portraying an old woman's voice when she read and Dorothy quotes. I would have liked to hear more analysis of the influence of personalism on her thinking and acting. The specific references to ideas taken from literature, for example Tolstoy or Dickens, were fascinating.

The narrators are awful, reading without normal feeling and inflection which makes it tough to listen, follow, and learn.

Great insights into Newman, personalism, religious liberty. There are a few times where the philosophical vocabulary bogged me down. But overall the ideas are well-explained. Professor Crosby's way is to present ideas, then present possible objections to the ideas, and then investigate those objections. Rigorous and helpful. A great introduction to the impact of Newman who, Crosby says: "stands at the threshold of the new age as a Christian Socrates, a pioneer of a new philosophy of the individual Person and Personal Life." The narrator has a little bit of Wallace Shawn in his energy and inflection. Quite helpful. Only problem is he read some words wrong (I'm following along in a paper copy so I can highlight and make notes. The font size in the print copy is so small as to be wearing to read without a narrator.) The word mistakes were grating where he repeatedly read causal as casual. Funny thing is at the end of the book the narrator seemed to me to correct a typo, changing "feeling and contemplating are capable of their own nationality" to "their own rationality."

Very helpful for a better understanding of Dorothy, particularly her Catholicism, and her personalism. Theories, ideas, and mystical longings put into practice in an interesting and challenging way.

I loved the movie. And I loved these stories of the making of the movie. It was as much fun to make as it was to watch. And its fun to hear how much fun it was to make in their own voices.

A great story of the development of a new form of leadership based on communication, commitment, and participation at all levels. I was able to read the story and start to glean some of the functional principles. This is in part due to the straight-forward nature of David Marquet. He is really trying to teach you.

Was completely unfamiliar with the subject. Learned a lot and feel like I have an overall picture that will allow for further learning. I had heard of Tolkien's great interest in the Norsemen and I read Magnus by George MacKay Brown. The Norsemen filled in the background for both of these. The only thing missing from the story is a final lecture describing the enduring influence of Norse culture on Western culture.

This is an engaging overview with ample readings from St. Augustine's work to give a sense of the expressiveness of the great saint and the broad range of topics he covered. The copious examples of Augustine's words are amazing, relevant, easy to understand. The author has a knack of picking out great quotes.

An understandable and lively presentation of ideas of rhetoric. He does teach the technical terms, for example petitio principii, and I was not able to remember them when he used them later in the presentation. But most of the time he does not rely on technical terminology. I wish this was available in book form so I could go back and study certain parts and create a new order of study to make new connections and really learn it. But the spoken form is a great way to present rhetoric because it allows the expressive quality to ring out.

Would you consider the audio edition of The Platonic Tradition to be better than the print version?

As far as I know the print version does not exist yet. But it was great to hear how it would be to have him teach it. For the same reason I enjoyed hearing Thomas Merton's recorded lectures. He did a great version of himself which is not true of all authors.

What about Professor Peter Kreeft’s performance did you like?

Its him in his unvarnished nerdy professor voice.

Any additional comments?

A great explanation of the historic flow of philosophy. Platonic Traditions made me think, "All my philosophy professors were terrible." Will listen to it again at some point.
