Historia
Simon Serrailler is faced with that most complicated of investigations - a cold case. Freak weather and flash floods have hit southern England. The small cathedral town of Lafferton is underwater, and a landslip on the moor has closed the roads. As the rain slowly drains away, a shallow grave - and a skeleton - is exposed; 20 years have passed, and the remains of missing teenager Joanne Lowther have finally been uncovered. Joanne, an only child, had been on her way home from a friend's house that night.

Had to stop myself to sleep - this is a good one
Revisado: 06-11-20
This is my favorite in the series so far. The mystery and the characters! Simon's story advances quite a bit here, and the way the characters intertwine kept me intrigued in such a way that I had to force myself to stop and sleep. Could have gone thru this one in one go!

Historia
Happily retired in the village of Three Pines, Armand Gamache, former Chief Inspector of Homicide with the Sûreté du Québec, has found a peace he'd only imagined possible. On warm summer mornings he sits on a bench holding a small book, The Balm in Gilead, in his large hands. "There is a balm in Gilead," his neighbor Clara Morrow reads from the dust jacket, "to make the wounded whole." While Gamache doesn't talk about his wounds and his balm, Clara tells him about hers. Peter, her artist husband, has failed to come home. Failed to show up as promised on the first anniversary of their separation. She wants Gamache's help to find him. Having finally found sanctuary, Gamache feels a near revulsion at the thought of leaving Three Pines. "There’s power enough in Heaven," he finishes the quote as he contemplates the quiet village, "to cure a sin-sick soul." And then he gets up. And joins her.

Beautiful, painful, wonderful
Revisado: 06-08-20
This is our last Gamache book with Ralph Cosham, and it's truly wonderful. Really good mystery, change-up in roles characters usually play, and a number of new locations. It's beautiful and heartbreaking on several levels -- pls don't let anyone spoil this ending for you. I remember where I was standing when I got there, and how it made me feel.

Historia
Chief Inspector Armand Gamache is on break from duty in Three Pines to attend the famed Winter Carnival up north. He has arrived in this beautiful, freezing city not to join the revels but to recover from an investigation gone hauntingly wrong. Still, violent death is inescapable—even here, in the apparent sanctuary of the Literary and Historical Society, where one obsessive academic’s quest for answers will lead Gamache down a dark path.

Addicted, going thru the Gamache books too quickly
Revisado: 06-08-20
I love living inside the world of these gooks and this one is a change of pace. We spend most of the time outside of Three Pines in a compelling mystery. And it's important to savor every minute of Ralph Cosham's narration.

Better and better
Revisado: 06-08-20
This one furthers the story of the Serailler family quite a bit, and I found that storyline much more compelling than the murder plot.

Historia
On holiday on the Cornish Riviera, Hercule Poirot is alarmed to hear pretty Nick Buckley describe her recent "accidental brushes with death". First, on a treacherous Cornish hillside, the brakes on her car failed. Then, on a coastal path, a falling boulder missed her by inches. Later, an oil painting fell and almost crushed her in bed. So when Poirot finds a bullet hole in Nick's sun hat, he decides that this girl needs his help. Can he find the would-be killer before he hits his target?

Good performance saves the story
Revisado: 06-08-20
This is not one of the most entertaining stories but Hugh Fraser, as always, keeps us listening with his characterizations. Worth it for Christie completists, but for dabblers might want to try another title.

Historia
Simon Serrailler has just wrapped up a difficult case for SIFT--Special Incident Flying Taskforce--and is on a sabbatical on a far-flung Scottish island when he is called back to Lafferton. Two local prostitutes have gone missing and are subsequently found strangled. By the time he gets back, another girl has disappeared. Is this a vendetta against prostitutes by someone with a warped mind? Or a series of killings by an angry punter?

Getting better and better
Revisado: 06-08-20
I'm working my way through the Serailler stories in order, and they keep getting better. This one had just the right amount of characters so that I could keep track of who is who. The story was great, very engaging.

Historia
When Lord Edgware is found murdered the police are baffled. His estranged actress wife was seen visiting him just before his death and Hercule Poirot himself heard her brag of her plan to "get rid" of him. But how could she have stabbed Lord Edgware in his library at exactly the same time she was seen dining with friends? It's a case that almost proves to be too much for the great Poirot.

It's so delightful to hear Hugh Fraser speak as Hercule Poirot, and his narration really makes the story come alive for me. Once you get to Orient Express, you'll wonder how Dan Stevens switches so quickly between all the characters -- it's remarkable.

Historia
Sheila Webb expected to find a respectable blind lady waiting for her at 19 Wilbraham Crescent - not the body of a middle-aged man sprawled across the living room floor. But when old Miss Pebmarsh denies sending for her in the first place, or of owning all the clocks that surround the body, it's clear that they are going to need a very good detective. "This crime is so complicated that it must be quite simple," declares Hercule Poirot. But there's a murderer on the loose, and time is ticking away.

Revisado: 03-30-20
Clocks is hard to figure out in advance, which makes it a fun re-read and re-listen. But having Hugh Fraser, our beloved TV Hastings, reading Poirot's parts... Divine.
