I wasn't really expecting to like this as much as I ended up enjoying it. Small caveat, if you are looking for a more dystopia kind of book, that's not at all what this is. The entire thing is a deconstruction of the main characters indoctrination. I would highly recommend for someone looking for something a little different.

I read a lot, and with that sometimes I figure out whodunit halfway through the book, which is kind of annoying. So when I am so completely surprised by an ending, I give it five stars. I didn't realize who the baddie was until I was supposed to know.

I can’t believe all this happened, my god. It’s kind of terrifying that that dude is still out there.

The ending didn't make much sense, but the twist at the end was well formed and interesting.

I wish I would have waited a couple of days to purchase this, because it really wasn't what I expected. I love horror movies, and loved most Gillian Flynn books, and I really do not get the comparison between this book and Gone Girl. This book does not have the suspense and twists that Gone Girl had. Quincy doesn't seem to be an active participant in her life or the story. In some cases she's overly judgemental and ignorant. The book as a whole, takes way too long to get to the climax and the climax isn't even that great.

It's really your run of the mill YA fantasy, which is not to say it is awful, just kind of generic. Poor and unassuming girl loves her best friend, ends up having powers, saving said boy, and gets whisked away from said boy to train. Some love triangle stuff, betrayal, and beating the bad guy because she is so good. Other books have done it before, and frankly they did it better.

This book is suprisingly engaging. I found myself really enjoying it immediately. It is witty and fun, and does not take itself seriously at all. It is a nice change from all of the dystopian fantasies and melodramatic love stories that seem to be prevalent in the genre right now.

The character names are HORRENDOUS, but once you get past that the storyline is pretty interesting. It is your normal run of the mill fantasy YA novel, so if you aren't into that then choose something else. But I really enjoy YA fiction, because sometimes you just don't want a book to challenge you. So if you are an adult looking specifically for a book that is solely for fun, this is a good one.

This phrase is so short and seems too simple to be true, but it is so incredibly true, and something I really needed to hear. I think it is the most important idea to take away from this book, I need to stop treating myself like I am a garbage person, because depression puts those lies in my head.

This book was so weird, but really great at the same time. This was my second John Scalzi book (I read Lock In first and liked it so much I got this), and I have got to say that he is such an interesting storyteller. You really don't even need to be a fan of science fiction to enjoy this book.
