They called her Lady Stewart when she was married to a British aristocrat. They called her Miss Cora when she ran a brothel in Florida. But she called herself Mrs. Crane when she asked Sherlock Holmes to locate her common-law husband, writer Stephen Crane, who'd gone missing in Cuba during the Spanish-American War. In their attempt to fulfil the lady's request, Holmes and Watson encounter a world of celebrity authors, terrorist bombings, and haunted manor houses.

An entertaining story in the vein of Doyle
Revisado: 03-16-17
Where does Sherlock Holmes and the Baron of Brede Place rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
If you are a fan of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle you will find this book in the same style. It has a good pace and a familiar literary style. I was anxious for the story to continue and if anything was disappointed that it ended so soon.
The narration of the book was excellent. It definitely elevated the story with his ability to seamlessly transition between characters. I will be pleased to listen to Ben Carling read additional books.

Historia
When misadventure led a schoolboy in London to employment at Baker Street, few could have guessed where his introduction to Sherlock Holmes would lead. But as the lad matures and he finds himself caught in the middle of a murder investigation, his friendship with Holmes and Watson lures him into the role of detective. 'Billy' documents his experiences, and soon his sleuthing skills not only bring him to another murder, but also lay the foundation for his metamorphosis into a famous mystery writer.

An entertaining story, excellent new narrator!
Revisado: 01-12-17
What did you love best about The Final Page of Baker Street?
The story follows in the vein of Arthur Conan Doyle. You will become immersed in the story through the strength of the narration. The seamless transition from one character to the next draws you into the story. The combination of Daniel Victor's writing with Ben Carling's narration is a potent combination. Upon finishing this book I immediately searched for others by this combination.
Who was your favorite character and why?
The character of John Watson, as any reader of Conan Doyle will know, is the internal narrator of the story. I found Daniel Victor's version very entertaining.
Which character – as performed by Ben Carling – was your favorite?
This is a difficult choice because the narrator gave an excellent performance. I suppose the character of Sherlock Holmes, although not a constant or frequent character for dialog, was my favorite. Ben Carling's portrayal of the character was excellent. It was just as I imagined the character of Sherlock Holmes to be.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I found it difficult to stop listening to this book. Also, this is a relatively short book. I found myself wanting there to be more. As the book wrapped up I was surprised to find that 6 hours had passed by.
Any additional comments?
As an observation, there were 3 or 4 "re-reads" of sentences in the body of the story. These are places that a narrator re-reads the text and then they are normally edited out. I understand this excellent story is getting a quick re-edit to remove those. It is a minor observation and I expect by the time my rating is live it will be fixed. This is an excellent book that you will want to share with your family and friends. Based on the strength of author's words and the excellent narration I am sharing it with mine.

Historia
When Indonesia's Mount Tambora erupted in 1815, it unleashed the most destructive wave of extreme weather the world has witnessed in thousands of years. The volcano's massive sulfate dust cloud enveloped the Earth, cooling temperatures and disrupting major weather systems for more than three years. Amid devastating storms, drought, and floods, communities worldwide endured famine, disease, and civil unrest on a catastrophic scale.

It's not what you think
Revisado: 04-25-15
What did you like best about Tambora? What did you like least?
It is interesting to hear about this major volcanic eruption from 200 years ago and its startling affect on world events. The reader however sounds like he is reciting a zip code directory. That's not a bad thing overall because the book talks very little about the actual eruption and subsequent effects in the local area. The book becomes a depressing advertisement for the problems of current global warming.
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
The ending comes about in the first two chapters. The rest of the book is a long explanation of all the similar weather events that occurred the 3 years following the eruption. There were some interesting and probable inferences with world health conditions but again very little about the actual eruption and the local area. This is to be expected because it occurred at a time and place with little opportunity to record the event. I was hoping for more information that may have been discovered since the eruption. There was a little in one chapter.
What do you think the narrator could have done better?
It seemed to be a very monotone recitation. Perhaps a different narrator with more emotion would have made the book more enjoyable. As it was I had to force myself to continue to listen to it even though I was intellectually curious about the topic.
Did Tambora inspire you to do anything?
Yes, I won't erupt next time I'm in south east Asia.
Any additional comments?
I was hopeful about this book but ended up being a bit disappointed. I would encourage an interested person to listen to the whole preview and decide if you can handle listening to an entire book that sounds the same.

Agent Franks of the U.S. Monster Control Bureau is a man of many parts - parts from other people, that is. Franks is nearly seven feet tall and all muscle. He's nearly indestructible. Plus he’s animated by a powerful alchemical substance and inhabited by a super-intelligent spirit more ancient than humanity itself. Good thing he’s on our side. More or less.

Revisado: 11-28-14
What made the experience of listening to Monster Hunter Nemesis the most enjoyable?
If you've never listened to any of the "monster hunter" books, stop everything, go back to the beginning and start there. You'll thank me later. I've enjoyed all of Larry's books. This is a series that will make you laugh, cry, ooh, and ahhh. It is a different kind of story but that makes it all the more enjoyable.
What about Oliver Wyman’s performance did you like?
Oliver has got reading this story down pat. He has an excellent ability to read and narrate the story. I can't imagine any other reader doing it justice. Good job!
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The ending of this book, no spoiler here, was very memorable. It did make you think. It also made you glad for the way things turned out.
Any additional comments?
I'm completely ready for Larry's next book in any of his series. I can imagine him out in the desert with his rifle coyote hunting. So, hurry up and finish your next book. We're all anxious for it!

There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s.

Revisado: 11-28-14
What did you love best about 14?
This story would make a great movie. I'd love to see this whole thing play out on screen. The characters in this story were just like people I know which made it all the more enjoyable. I can't think of a single moment in the book that dropped me out of the story. Some books run along great until they hit a snag that drops you out of the plot. This book was great right out to the end.
What was one of the most memorable moments of 14?
The first moment on the roof of the building was great. I've had that same moment before myself which made me laugh!
Any additional comments?
I found myself looking for moments to restart the audiobook because I didn't want to put the story down. I sat for extra minutes in my driveway when I got home. A good read.

You are now entering "the VOID"
Revisado: 11-28-14
Would you try another book from Peter F. Hamilton and/or John Lee?
I am a fan of Peter F. Hamilton. I think he is a great author and I very much enjoy his work. In the whole it is very thought provoking and expressive. The story is enjoyable and I found myself constantly wanting to find out what was going on with the characters. This story was kind of a re-boot to the VOID trilogy. Peter, if you're listening, you've got to get better and writing endings to your books. He's a great author that can spin a wonderful story. The closing process however is clunky. The ending is a little weak.
What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?
I have enjoyed all of Peter F. Hamilton's books. The universe that he created for the VOID series is interesting and compelling. I am interested in all of the technology that he writes about and would love to see it in our world.
Have you listened to any of John Lee’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
John Lee is an excellent reader. Some people search for author's to read. I do too but I also find myself looking for books read by John Lee. He is that good.
Any additional comments?
If you haven't read any of the VOID trilogy books you probably want to do that before you read this book. You don't have to read them to understand the plot or the story but it will put things into much better perspective if you do.

This thrilling exploration of some of the greatest breakthroughs in science reveals the extreme lengths some scientists go to in order to make their theories public. Fraud, suppressing evidence, and unethical or reckless PR games are sometimes necessary to bring the best and most brilliant discoveries to the world's attention. Inspiration can come from the most unorthodox of places, and Brooks introduces us to Nobel laureates who get their ideas through drugs, dreams, and hallucinations. .

A 10 hour advertisement for taking drugs
Revisado: 11-28-14
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
This book is an explanation for why people don't trust scientists and why they are the butt of jokes in movies. They're human, they make mistakes, they take drugs. If this was your only view of scientists you'd think they were all a bunch of pot smoking, acid dropping, drug addicts. I wish Michael Brooks would have given more examples of scientists that were novel and innovative that weren't tied to "bad" behavior. Otherwise, I enjoyed the book.

Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he's alive - and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plainold "human error" are much more likely to kill him first.

A book I could hardly put down
Revisado: 11-28-14
Would you listen to The Martian again? Why?
I will listen to this book again just to hear all of the pithy commentary.
What did you like best about this story?
This book was amazingly plausible and I enjoyed the realism. It made for a very compelling book.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I have to admit I did laugh out loud at many points through this book. The NASA officials and scientists were spot on. No offense NASA but you know who you are.
Any additional comments?
You'll have to listen to a few "F" bombs to get through this book but at least they were well placed. I recommended this book to my wife I liked it so much.

Revisado: 10-13-13
What made the experience of listening to Ready Player One the most enjoyable?
I grew up in the 1980's and understood all the of the references. It was great. The author did a great job of getting the era right.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Parzival
Which scene was your favorite?
The blade runner chapter. It is my favorite movie.

Enjoyed the story. Hated the reader
Revisado: 12-05-12
Is there anything you would change about this book?
Re-record this book series with the first reader Oliver whyman.
What was most disappointing about David Weber’s story?
David sometimes gets a bit wordy in the details of the politics, the ships, the weapons, the minutia of the story. It gets tedious sometimes and I wish for a fast forward button. Also there are times the "expressions" used are needlessly modified. I think a week could have stayed a "week" instead of becoming a "five day". Little things like that get a bit irritating when they really aren't necessary in this story.
Otherwise, I like the book and series up to this point. Just re-record it please.
How could the performance have been better?
As I said above, change the reader to the original, Whyman.
Did By Heresies Distressed inspire you to do anything?
I'm ready for a completion to some more storylines. David is great for a serial story but honestly David could you please just get to the point in one of these books and wrap up the whole story? Will there ever be an end?
