Warning: Spoilers in the last paragraph.

As the pre-penultimate book in the series, a lot of setup was done, while filling the gaps with large and small battles, after the buildup in the last book it felt a bit deflated. A necessary evil in a tale being told in 10 volumes.

Having read them as they were released originally (rapidly released, Chatfield produced a book a month I think) it is good to see an editors work in the audiobook... 'tis but a scratch :). The narration is the same excellence I expect.

I just enjoyed the book overall less than I wanted.

Love the OP crafter taking on all challenges. Knowing the ending, i would have loved to see the last three volumes of the series told over at least five.

Consider the pacing. A full book for becoming a dwarven master smith. This book works through all but two major enemies of M&L, birth, expanding operations to two more planets, firehosed Ashal Kingdoms introduction and status with 3-5 more major allies to the alliance, forging a new WoP, then Daves full circle to Rockbreaking comets. Heh, complaining Id like more is it's own endorsement.

Topic spoilers

The story ended suddenly again, and it felt a bit cheap. The status of digitisation felt resolved with the sisters speech and commitment to surgery at the end of the last book.

Not my favourite Culture story, but usually the first one I recomend to friends (Player of Games, no defence for my choice) as it plays well as an intro to Culture, then supllies significant reread value once theyve absorbed the rest of his work, plus a Zakalwe tease to give it another perspective on read 3.

Banks' "Easy read" for me. An audio book im happy pick up and listen to from any point

Considering it after a re-read in 2017, i cant believe this isnt multiply explored in LitRPG. many Veppers like companies and characters spatter the genre, but no literal vrmmo hells from fundamentalists.

Enjoyed the story and the narration immensely, particularly with no familiarity to tech RPGs

Character skills development and pacing in LitRPG is fun. It can be greatly accelerated or explained by 'level up' avoiding the some-months-later gaps in other stories.

That said, I think LitRPG is already in a rut regarding the link between real and virtual worlds. Every author has a major plot element involving a magic link and eventual merge of real and virtual worlds, and the level of interaction between the two is the only variable. A trope I'm not sure LitRPG can avoid.

I'd like to see other commenters list Authors in the genre
