A worth successor to Heinlein!
Revisado: 08-10-20
Cam Alvarez is a scrappy, young tough guy trying to scrape along in a sprawling megacity. When he gets into trouble with the local bad guys, the cops give him a choice of going to jail or joining the military.
I’m sure you can guess his choice.
The old story about a talented young soldier and his progression up the ranks is a time-honored trope. This story pulls off a fresh look at it that will have you asking for more.
This is finely crafted military science fiction. It probably helps the Partlow was an Army Infantry officer. The tactics and tech make perfect sense and the world itself is believable and immersive. He gives you just enough details to fill out the universe but doesn’t burden you with the math like RAH did.
The cast of characters is well drawn and you’ll care about them by the end of the book. I really cared about who lived and who died in battle, and I bet you will too.
I’m actually about to start the third book in this series. I’m looking forward to it! If my TBR (To Be Read) list wasn’t so long, I would’ve read this sooner! 😛

Solid Military Sci-Fi
Revisado: 06-09-18
This is a very fun and tactically accurate military science fiction book with active and colorful prose. J.R. uses his first personal knowledge of infantry tactics to weave a believable and action-packed tale. I loved the dialog and banter between the characters. If you're a veteran, you will recognize it immediately.
Scipio is a solid protagonist, his arc of an infantry NCO pushed to assume greater responsibility is engaging. But I think my favorite character is Basil. His arc is deeply satisfying.
The world of The Sleeping Legion is fascinating and very well thought out. Without giving too much away... It's interesting to see a sci-fi world where humans are subservient to alien races and are not the master of the universe...yet. I jumped into this series not knowing it was set in a universe written by another author. (Tim C. Taylor's The Human Legion series) So, of course, I'll have to check out that series now, once I finish this one.
Jeffery Kafer is an outstanding voice actor. His skill clearly adds to the written word.

Revisado: 06-05-18
Plot Gardening is clear, concise, and straight to the point. You won't find any new plotting formulas here, just a well packaged breakdown of a few existing plot systems. Chris has a way of taking this daunting subject and making it very accessible.
Just remember to do the exercises. ;)

Historia
Los Angeles of 2039 is a baffling and bifurcated place. After the Collapse of 2028, a vast section of LA, the Disincorporated Zone, was disowned by the civil authorities and became essentially a third world country within the borders of the city. Navigating the boundaries between DZ and LA proper is a tricky task, and there's no one better suited than eccentric private investigator Erasmus Keane.

Detective Noir meets Dystopian Future
Revisado: 07-22-16
I loved this book. It has compelling characters with their own quirks and idiosyncrasies. The plot is tight. No threads are left hanging, and they all tie together nicely. There are a few well-placed twists and turns that will surprise even the most experienced reader.
The world is well thought out and captivating. The suspension of disbelief is not really required.
Rob Kroese is a funny guy. There are many scenes where I laughed out loud! If you like his humor, you will want to check out his other books.
Fred Berman did an outstanding job bringing the various characters to life. His performance definitely added the prose.

Amazingly well done!
Revisado: 04-01-16
I was drawn to this book because of all the controversy surrounding it. Thank you HarperCollins for introducing me to a fine author I may have never heard of otherwise.
The social commentary is hilarious and thought provoking. The world building is very well thought out and highly plausible, based on current media and socioeconomic trends.
The story itself is pretty fast paced considering the shear amount of detail and commentary that help to flesh out a complex and immersive world. The story shifts between the VR world and IRL seamlessly, I was never left wondering where I was, or what was going on.
I care about these characters. They are nuanced and have clear motives and believable arcs.
Mare Trevathan’s narration is masterful. She has clear, crisp diction and a very pleasant voice to spend over ten hours with. She does many voices and excellent dialects. She also brings the emotion of the scene right to the surface without over doing it. This was no simple narration; this was truly voice acting. I’ll look for more of her work.
I listened to this book in one sitting and consider it time well spent. I look forward to more from Nick Cole. I sure hope he stays Indie…

Not necessarily just for actors.
Revisado: 08-23-15
In a word: comprehensive. All the nuts and bolts, and many valuable insider tips. There are many examples of what to do and what not to do, with at name of the movie and the time stamp. I figured this would just be about acting techniques. It manages to cover pretty much everything. Auditions, etiquette, pre and post production, and it’s done in a way that keeps your attention.
The narration was superb. It felt like David H. Lawrence XVII was giving me a personal seminar. Great pacing, and consistent volume. Never any breath or mouth noises. A real pleasure to listen to.
I’m a writer that is looking to narrate my own books. Not only did I glean plenty of great info for believable voice over work, but from a writer’s point of view, knowing the actor’s process is already changing how I write.

Historia
In the early 18th century, the Pirate Republic was home to some of the great pirate captains, including Blackbeard, "Black Sam" Bellamy, and Charles Vane. Along with their fellow pirates - former sailors, indentured servants, and runaway slaves - this "Flying Gang" established a crude but distinctive democracy in the Bahamas, carving out their own zone of freedom in which servants were free, Blacks could be equal citizens, and leaders were chosen or deposed by a vote.

The culture wars are over and the idiots have won. This is a veteran journalist’s caustically funny, righteously angry lament about the glorification of ignorance in the United States. The three Great Premises of Idiot America: · Any theory is valid if it sells books, soaks up ratings, or otherwise moves units; anything can be true if someone says it loudly enough; "fact" is that which enough people believe. And "truth" is determined by how fervently they believe it.

I don't disagree with the author's basic premise,.. unfortunately, this turns into a far-left 'hit piece' pretty quickly.
