Detailed, excellent

Occasionally too much detail but where it matters, truly excellent. Passages such as that covering the advance and retreat into / from Russia were covered very well. I was left moved by this story of Napoleon’s life.

Music, rape and murder, tripping the light fantastic…

The back ground music is very distracting. I had thought it would be periodic and emphasize key dramatic events. But it’s constant and takes a lot to get over. I would not buy this version again.

The narrator continues to do an excellent job.

The story line is really weird though. These books (and I’ve read or listened to all of them now) started off great. The latter ones (especially this one) have a ton of dark references to rape mixed in with hard to follow trips across the worlds as Ciri discovers her powers.
One could argue that the author does a great job of portraying the worst aspects of war but some just seems unnecessary.


And on the subject of Ciri’s power. This seemed strangely undeveloped.

Overall i was disappointed in these last two books having loved the first several.

The last chapter…

..what an amazing, moving story of risk and life and what it means to be human.
The last chapter is the best of all. A reflective, moving episode, i was left sleepless, motivated, saddened. All at once.
A brilliant piece of work. Well written and well performed.

Coming back to Culture

Read the 9 culture books about 3 decades ago. Coming back to them again. Thoroughly enjoyed this. Well written of course and perfectly executed by the reader.

Seemed less focused than other Hastings’

First: narration and production was really bad. The reader has a triggering accent that you have to get over to enjoy this book. Additionally his artificial accents for Chinese or Korean subjects were really not great.

Having said all that, i know a lot more about this period of time than i did before and found the story telling compelling, albeit a bit less focused than, say, Bomber Command or Abyss.

Stunningly great. Exhaustingly emotional when you put your head into the minds of the young men flying into harms way. Not that much different to the Somme.

Stephen Fry kills it!

The amount of content here, the delivery by Fry and the stories themselves make this a must have collection.
I loved the backstories provided through Fry’s own forewords and they helped really set the stage.
Thank you, Stephen Fry. Well done.

Well researched, well written, startling story

Comprehensive and a fast pace. Very credible and stunning narrative. Ok delivery is a bit ‘breathless’ at times.
