I loved the stories my grandpa use to tell about his childhood, his service in WWII, and just the general things he'd done and experienced. Listening to this audiobook is just like that, except your grandpa is Mel Brooks. Fans of Brooks will love the stories he tells, but for those who grew up hearing stories from grandparents who lived through the Great Depression and WWII, Brooks's storytelling will bring you right back to those experiences, and that makes this audiobook truly special.

Maberry's Fantasy Foray Does Not Dissapoint

Fans of Maberry will be rewarded with the action-packed plot and compelling characters they've come to expect; lovers of fantasy will find plenty of good old fashioned sword and sorcery wrapped in a story that yet manages to be an engaging and fresh addition to the genre; fans of cosmic horror will find familiar figures depicted in new and interesting ways; and, as always, Ray Porter demonstrates why he's the GOAT of audiobook narrators.

Just Wonderfully Meta

Many of us have played RPG video games in which you can level up quickly by doing silly tasks. Admit it, you've probably smithed thousands of iron daggers or walked around repeatedly casting Muffle in Skyrim or done something similar in a multitude of games. Now imagine a fantasy world where that really is a way for you to level up your skills. It's a compelling and entertaining story that simultaneously satirizes both paper-and-pencil RPGs and video game RPGS.

Do You Remember the 1980s D&D Cartoon?

Do You Remember the 1980s D&D Cartoon? It’s like that, but the DM is an evil dork from our world who can send players into the game where they become trapped as their characters. Oh, and there’s way more swearing, dick jokes, and blasphemy. Rarely have I laughed so hard or been so thoroughly entertained by an audiobook.

Still Not Sure

I've listened to this three times, and I'm still not sure. I've given SEAL Team 666 this much deliberation because Maberry mentions SEAL Team 666 (via the character Mr. Church) multiple times in the Joe Ledger series. Sometimes the novel feels a bit like an armed forces recruiting ad, but that's not the problem; I think what strains my suspension of disbelief is how blase all the characters are about the supernatural, including the new guy who had absolutely no idea anything like SEAL Team 666 existed before being assigned to it. There's a good deal to like about this book: the major characters are decently fleshed out, the details of the protagonist's childhood are properly chilling, and the motivation of the villain and the overall set up of the major conflict are logical and interesting. The story has good bones; I think it would have benefited from an "everyman" character who found the supernatural evil they confront as freaky and terrifying as the reader is intended to.

A Satisfying Entry in the Joe Ledger Ledger

If you're a fan of the Joe Ledger series, this is a very satisfying addition, albeit a bleaker one. A creative writing professor once told me the key to a decent story is to create a character the reader will like, then make bad stuff happen to them; Maberry seems to be taking that advice to heart.
