Historia
In virtually every way that can be measured, Gen Z’s mental health is worse than that of previous generations. Youth suicide rates are climbing, antidepressant prescriptions for children are common, and the proliferation of mental health diagnoses has not helped the staggering number of kids who are lonely, lost, sad and fearful of growing up. What’s gone wrong with America’s youth? In Bad Therapy, bestselling investigative journalist Abigail Shrier argues that the problem isn’t the kids—it’s the mental health experts.

Look like a good book, but not as good
Revisado: 03-05-25
I read Shrierer's first book called Irreversible Damage, which I thought was very good, with anecdotes but also some data and scientific basis. This new book was a complete disappointment, I found it to be an extremely reductionist version, completely anecdotal, basically dismissing all therapists based on her own experience. It makes a mockery of authors who have been very important in the development of humanistic therapy, such as Carl Rogers, and ridicules authors who have made important contributions from a scientific point of view, such as Dan Sieguel.
What I found most acceptable was her call for parents to encourage independence and resilience in children, but this has been done better by other authors. I don't think the book is worth reading.

Historia
Teenage girls are taking courses of testosterone and disfiguring their bodies. Parents are undermined; experts are over-relied upon; dissenters in science and medicine are intimidated; free speech truckles under renewed attack; socialized medicine bears hidden consequences; and an intersectional era has arisen in which the desire to escape a dominant identity encourages individuals to take cover in victim groups. Every person who has ever had a skeptical thought about the sudden rush toward a non-binary future but been afraid to express it - this book is for you.

Definetively a good, worth to read book!
Revisado: 02-04-25
Irreversible Damage examines the sharp rise in the number of adolescent girls identifying as transgender. Abigail Shrier argues that this phenomenon is not always the result of genuine gender dysphoria but is influenced by social, cultural, and digital factors. She explores the role of social media, peer influence, and school policies in shaping young girls' perceptions of gender identity. I decided to read this book, because there where some things regarding the transgender movement (specially with kids and adolescents) that seem a little bit off to me, and this book confirms, with evidence and insights some of my personal perceptions on the topic.
Key Themes
Social Contagion: Shrier suggests that the increase in female-to-male transgender identification among teenage girls resembles a social trend rather than a biological or psychological condition.
The Role of the Internet: Platforms like YouTube, TikTok, and Tumblr are highlighted as key influences in encouraging young people to explore gender transition.
Medical Concerns: The book raises concerns about the ease with which teenagers are prescribed puberty blockers, hormones, and even surgeries, sometimes without thorough psychological evaluation.
Parental Struggles: Many parents feel conflicted, caught between wanting to support their child’s well-being and questioning whether transition is the right choice.
Voices of Detransitioners: Shrier includes accounts from individuals who transitioned as teenagers but later regretted their decision, emphasizing the long-term impact of medical interventions.
Thought-provoking and deeply researched, Irreversible Damage sheds light on a controversial topic that is rarely discussed from a critical perspective.
Incorporates real-life stories from parents, doctors, and young people who have undergone gender transition.
Challenges mainstream narratives and raises ethical questions about medical practices related to transgender minors.

Compassionate and illuminating exploration of ADD
Revisado: 01-14-25
In Scattered Minds, Gabor Maté offers a deeply compassionate and illuminating exploration of Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), drawing from his personal experiences with the condition as well as his extensive work as a physician. Unlike many books that focus solely on symptom management or behavioral strategies, Maté delves into the roots of ADD, emphasizing its connection to early childhood experiences, brain development, and the broader cultural context.
Maté challenges the conventional medical perspective that views ADD as purely a genetic or neurological disorder. Instead, he presents a nuanced argument that ADD arises from the interplay of biology and environment, particularly during the critical early years of a child’s life. He explains how stress, unmet emotional needs, and trauma during formative years can disrupt brain development, leading to the characteristic symptoms of ADD, such as inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity.
One of the most striking aspects of the book is Maté’s empathetic tone. He addresses the shame and guilt that often accompany an ADD diagnosis, especially for parents who may blame themselves or for individuals who struggle with feelings of inadequacy. Maté’s personal anecdotes, both as someone with ADD and as a parent of children with the condition, add authenticity and relatability to his insights.
The book also emphasizes healing and growth. Maté advocates for a holistic approach to managing ADD, urging readers to see ADD not as a flaw but as a different way of being that, with the right support, can flourish.

Revisado: 01-14-25
I wish I read this book earlier in my life!!. The Menopause Brain by Dr. Lisa Mosconi is a groundbreaking exploration of the intersection between menopause and brain health, offering women science-based insights and practical guidance to navigate this transformative life stage with clarity and confidence. As a neuroscientist and women's health expert, Dr. Mosconi sheds light on the often-overlooked cognitive and emotional changes that accompany menopause, while empowering readers to take charge of their health.

Historia
In this revolutionary book, renowned physician Gabor Maté eloquently dissects how in Western countries that pride themselves on their healthcare systems, chronic illness and general ill health are on the rise. Nearly 70 percent of Americans are on at least one prescription drug; more than half take two. In Canada, every fifth person has high blood pressure. In Europe, hypertension is diagnosed in more than 30 percent of the population. And everywhere, adolescent mental illness is on the rise. So what is really “normal” when it comes to health?

Great reading
Revisado: 01-14-25
In The Myth of Normal: Trauma, Illness, and Healing in a Toxic Culture, Gabor Maté, delivers a profound exploration of how modern society contributes to chronic illness, mental health issues, and overall disconnection from well-being.
The book argues that many aspects of contemporary life—our relentless pursuit of productivity, societal pressures, and detachment from meaningful relationships—contribute to widespread physical and emotional ailments. He connects these issues to a broader culture that prioritizes superficial success over genuine human needs, resulting in a landscape where suffering is normalized and health is compromised.
Dr. Maté´s writing mixes scientific research findings, with personal anecdotes and insghts, and patient stories to illustrate how deeply trauma and stress are embedded in the human experience. He explains how unresolved trauma manifests in physical illness, highlighting the inseparable link between mind and body. His writing is compassionate and insightful, urging readers to reconsider their understanding of health and wellness.
Another great aspect of the book is its emphasis on healing. Maté doesn’t just critique the system but offers practical pathways to self-awareness, connection, and recovery. He emphasizes the importance of self-compassion and fostering environments where healing can flourish, whether within families, workplaces, or broader communities.

Historia

Historia
In Different, world-renowned primatologist Frans de Waal draws on decades of observation and studies of both human and animal behavior to argue that despite the linkage between gender and biological sex, biology does not automatically support the traditional gender roles in human societies. While humans and other primates do share some behavioral differences, biology offers no justification for existing gender inequalities.

Historia
