Quite intriguing..
Revisado: 03-09-24
The early chapters were a bit slow-going, but the story picked up pace and interest significantly after Diesel ventured out to direct his own research and labs. The theory of his disappearance was certainly intriguing. A nice side story of historical interest was a view of life in the Gilded Age through the descriptions of his home life and frequent travels. Recommend!

Well-paced story. Like Harris’ use of the participant-bystander as narrator. Looking forward to the next book in the series.

Jess needs a fresh start. She’s broke and alone, and she’s just left her job under less than ideal circumstances. Her half-brother Ben didn’t sound thrilled when she asked if she could crash with him for a bit, but he didn’t say no, and surely everything will look better from Paris. Only when she shows up – to find a very nice apartment, could Ben really have afforded this? – he’s not there.

Avoid this one..
Revisado: 02-13-23
A few chapters into this, I thought this would be a nice diversion while on the treadmill or on a long drive. It soon turned into a tedious slog. It began to feel like the writer was being paid by the word, with heavy-handed descriptions that added no nuance or depth. Lots of unbelievable details, too: all the talk about Jess needing to save her limited cash, then having her drop a few euros in a beggar’s hat — really? Okay, the ending included a bit of a plot twist, but by then I had no sympathy for any of the primary characters. Avoid this one!

A good entertainment of spy and political intrigue, and a suitable companion for the treadmill or long walks. Suggest “reading” the series in order, or seeing the movie first before reading this next in the series.

Historia
It's difficult today to imagine how America survived the Great Depression. Only through the stories of the common people who struggled during that era can we really understand how the nation endured. In The Forgotten Man, Amity Shlaes offers a striking reinterpretation of the Great Depression. Rejecting the old emphasis on the New Deal, she turns to the neglected and moving stories of individual Americans, and shows how they helped establish the steadfast character we developed as a nation.

Very interesting to gain perspective by comparing events then to events today. At first thought I’d find this slow-going, but I was wrong. Very much worth your time and attention.

Historia
During World War II, in the middle of building an atomic bomb, the leaders of the Manhattan Project were alarmed to learn that Nazi Germany was far outpacing the Allies in nuclear weapons research; Hitler, with just a few pounds of uranium, would have the capability to reverse the entire D-Day operation and conquer Europe. So they assembled a rough and motley crew of geniuses—dubbed the Alsos Mission—and sent them careening into Axis territory to spy on, sabotage, and even assassinate members of Nazi Germany's feared Uranium Club.

Historia
From New York Times best-selling author Erik Larson comes his first venture into fiction, an otherworldly tale of intrigue and the impossible that marshals his trademark approach to nonfiction to create something new: a ghost story thoroughly grounded in history. Pioneering psychologist William James leads an expedition to a remote isle in search of answers after a family inexplicably vanishes. Was the cause rooted in the physical world...or were there forces more paranormal and sinister at work?

Absolutely riveting
Revisado: 10-15-21
We’ve enjoyed all of Mr. Larson’s work to-date, and cannot recommend his first work of fiction highly enough. This was absolutely riveting!
The performance, too, was quite well done. 5 Stars all around!
