Shock Value Depravity
Revisado: 04-17-20
This book was probably edgy for its time when it first came out decades ago, but it has little value beyond the depravity.
My biggest problem with this book is that the author didn't convince me that children were capable of performing these horrific acts and either not turning on each other and going to the authorities or getting caught. The only character whose psychology fits his actions is the psychopathic Paul. The other children seem far too normal to be kidnappers, torturers, and murderers.
Performance wise Matt Godfrey is at his weakest here given the source material. I usually like this narrator in the other books he has done. However his impression of distressed/complaining/whiney female character is grating and almost unbearable. There is a lot of that in this book considering its about the kidnapping/torture of a young woman

Historia
In a bleak corner of the city of Valgaast, the House of Malveil awaits. A place of darkness, its halls throb with a sinister history. Its rooms are filled with malice. Its walls echo with pain. Now it stirs eagerly with the approach of an old heir - Colonel Maeson Strock of the Astra Militarum has returned home to his ancestral mansion. He is a man broken, both by the horrors of war and by personal loss, and he has come home to take up the mantle of Planetary Governor.

Disappointing, lost potential
Revisado: 03-15-20
I do realize this book was labeled as "Warhammer Horror", however I think there was the potential for a better political thriller set in the war-hammer universe that was never realized.
I was drawn into the initial plot of a soldier who inherits the Governorship of his home planet and has to return home to root out corruption. The world is no longer sending its supplies to the empire because greedy local oligarchs are diverting the industrial output to the black market for personal profit. The main character is tasked with restoring his planet's production output or risk having his throne seized by Imperial authorities. The effort to restore honesty to the planet's industry is opposed by a powerful councilor and her other political allies. The governor must press forward with his plan to end the black market while facing assassination attempts on himself and his supporters.
Unfortunately the horror element had to rear its ugly head and abort the promising early plot. The governors mansion is haunted because of past dark family secret. While the political machinations were interesting, the "haunted house" was tedious and dull. It works on the main character through a series of mind-altering dream sequences. I hate dream sequences in books! Although I finished the book, I barely payed attention while listening to the ending. I wasn't particularly willing to try to figure out if what was happening was real (in the context of the book) or another part of a dream sequence.

Historia
What really happened to the billions of dollars worth of gold seized by Nazi Germany? What role did the Swiss government play and what are the implications of neutrality during wartime? The author addresses these questions, presents the case for and against Switzerland, and applies the lessons learned from World War II to the broader issue of companies - and countries - profiting during wartime.

Unbearable Narration
Revisado: 07-12-13
This is not a review of the book, as I was unable to get far into the book.
The narration is absolutely awful. It was done by a real woman, but has the sound and flow of a robotic synthesized voice.
I have listened to hundreds of audiobooks and this bar far is the worst narrated one of them all.
It was like someone just took the text and put it through one of those voice-synthesizer programs.

Historia
From the preeminent Hitler biographer, a fascinating and original exploration of how the Third Reich was willing and able to fight to the bitter end of World War II. Countless books have been written about why Nazi Germany lost World War II, yet remarkably little attention has been paid to the equally vital question of how and why it was able to hold out as long as it did.

Bloated and Repetitive
Revisado: 12-14-11
Would you recommend The End to your friends? Why or why not?
No
I have read many world war 2 histories and I usually don't purchase the new ones anymore as most of what can be written has already been said many times by other authors. With that in mind, I purchased The End as this book does focus on the final end of the third Reich and looks at that aspect of the war with a new angle.
The problem is that there just isn't enough new insight to justify the huge length of this book. The author repeats his central thesis over and over again into tedium. I was very pleased when the book was finally over so that I could go on to listen to something else. Everything that was needed to be said in the book could have been done effectively with half the length or less.
Have you listened to any of Sean Pratt’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
The narrator is not the issue here
Was The End worth the listening time?
No, far too long

Filled with unforgettable stories of emperors, generals, and religious patriarchs, as well as fascinating glimpses into the life of the ordinary citizen, Lost to the West reveals how much we owe to the Byzantine Empire that was the equal of any in its achievements, appetites, and enduring legacy. For more than a millennium, Byzantium reigned as the glittering seat of Christian civilization.

Essentially the same as the podcast
Revisado: 09-05-10
Lars Brownworth's work is a fine piece of popularized history. However he has already given this work away for free as a podcast, and thus I cannot recommend spending money on this audiobook.

Historia
Throughout history - from the bone-crushing age of antiquity to the sack-tearing modern era - there have been larger-than-life ass-kickers with a natural talent for unleashing their epic bloodlust on anyone who crossed them. They built empires, smashed armies, and ravaged civilizations for wealth, glory, and ultimate supremacy. Sometimes villains, sometimes heroes, sometimes criminally insane, they had one thing in common: They were all Badass!

A Book for People who Hate Books
Revisado: 11-26-09
Initially I was highly suspicious of this book's title. However, a recommendation and reviews on another site convinced me to burn a credit on this recording.
From the Moniker "Badass" I figured it could go either one of two ways: it was going to be a lowbrow treatment of history, or a history with wit and a more sophisticated sense of crude humor (like George MacDonald Fraser).
Sadly, It turns out the credit was wasted and it lived up to my worst fears.
If you are looking for history or humor and don't want to cringe at the constant "dudespeak" look elsewhere.
If you are a teenage male who needs to find an easy book to report on so you can maintain a C- average in history class to avoid getting your playstation taken away, then you have found your title.
