Historia
Three thousand years ago, humans were hunted by powerful races with wild magic until the treaty was formed. Now, for centuries, the elves have taken a young woman from Luella's village to be their Human Queen. To be chosen is seen as a mark of death by the townsfolk. A mark 19-year-old Luella is grateful to have escaped as a girl. Instead, she's dedicated her life to studying herbology and becoming the town's only healer. That is, until the Elf King unexpectedly arrives...for her.

Another Promising Story But Lacks Energy
Revisado: 08-09-23
The performance by the narrator was good, but it needed a little more energy and perhaps more characterization. Too much monotone.
The story is a bit incoherent in its logic. The vitriol that the protagonist had for her childhood friend whom she loved was illogical. Also, he was in the story for the plot to move forward in the beginning and then forgotten about for the rest of the story. From what I thought, he was trying to help her since it was thought that being the elf queen was tantamount to a death sentence.
The language in the story took me out right away. Try to remember that this is a story set in medieval times (at least I think it was), not Downtown Los Angeles 2023. Need to be consistent when world building and expecting the audience to believe it.
The plot is better than the last story I reviewed in terms of getting through it, but it does lack some energy and conflict. Characters always arguing grow very boring after a while.

Historia
Catalia "Cat" Fisa is a powerful clairvoyant known as the Kingmaker. This smart-mouthed soothsayer has no interest in her powers and would much rather fly under the radar, far from the clutches of her homicidal mother. But when an ambitious warlord captures her, she may not have a choice. Griffin is intent on bringing peace to his newly conquered realm in the magic-deprived south. When he discovers Cat is the Kingmaker, he abducts her.

Promising Headline But Couldn't Get Through It.
Revisado: 08-09-23
Overall, the story lacked any kind of real conflict. Griffin was an alfa-male, to be sure, but his contrast with the protagonist wasn't enough to keep me invested in the story.
Modern authors like this tend to place their characters in ancient time periods, but the modern California Valley-Girl language seeps in and takes the reader right out of the story.
The narrator is pleasing to listen to but has a good narration voice for documentaries, not novels. She has no change in emotion or acting, which would do better with a story written in the 1st person.

Another Edge of Your Seat Story
Revisado: 01-12-23
I'm invested to hear the last Ryan Drake story. I finally want to know what happens to Anya and Drake when it's over. This story was well worth listening to for the fine performance of the reader. His grasp of various accents helped to distinguish who was talking. If I had to choose an actor for a Ryan Drake film, I'd say he has it, at least through voice.

Entertaining But Missed Ryan Drake
Revisado: 11-16-22
The lack of Ryan Drake in this story was the only disappointing factor. As much as I like the character of Anya, she is better when she teams up with Ryan. They both are like meat and potatoes. They work much better together.
With that said, I enjoyed the pacing of the story. The reveal at the end was only surprising in some ways. I guessed that one of them would happen, and I was right.
As a stand-alone Anya story, I will recommend it.

Another Great Hit
Revisado: 10-19-22
The first Ryan Drake book made me want to hear this one right away. I love the story. Jordan does a great job creating characters that you want to root for. There's also this sense of urgency since he pulls no punches with the danger that his characters face. Anyone can be hurt or die. My only critique is the different voices of the characters. The narrator does an excellent job with the different accents, but one character is confusing. Is Cunningham Irish or Scottish? The accent changes throughout different scenes.

Awesome story!
Revisado: 10-15-22
Absolutely the best action thriller I've read so far. I only had a little trouble with the differences in the character voices. The voice actor did a superb job with the accents, but some of the characters were hard to pick out. Sometimes Drake sounded like Dietrich when he was angry.

I truly hope that this marks the beginning of a Cameron Becker series. This novel has awesome pacing, well researched, and believability. It sounds like a Clive Cussler or Chris Ryan novel (except the narration is better).

Alice Feeney crafts a good plot, but not a finish.
Revisado: 07-03-22
The voice narrators were superb at keeping the story going at a nice, understandable, and entertaining pace. Feeney's plot have lots of twists that, sometimes I struggle with because as she tells it 1st person with each chapter, the character lies to the reader in order to set up the twist. The narration is what's supposed to be what the characters are thinking, so lying to the reader, the characters are eccentially lying to themselves.
She sprinkles the narration with too many platitudes. These phrases are dandelions in the yard. Too many, and you have weeds.
Her plots are good with the surprises around every corner, keeping the reader hooked on the story. Some people like that. I do too, but I'm not thrilled with her endings. I still feel like the story is left with too many unanswered questions. Spoilers: The main characters end up being awful people, and sometimes, the victims are people who don't deserve what happened to them. Their endings were too brutal.
This is my 2nd novel of hers. I may not go for a 3rd.

Very Enjoyable
Revisado: 04-16-22
This is the 2nd LJ Ross book I've listened to and although the psychological terms and things tend to go over my head, the story itself is very engaging. I love the Alex Gregory protagonist and how he overcomes his own psych issues while continuing to do his job catching serial killers. I would recommend this book.

This Story Gives a Decent Backstory
Revisado: 03-19-22
After watching "The Batman", this story makes more sense without revisiting the overused Wayne family murder. It explains why Bruce Wayne's Bat Car looks like it was built out of a 1969 GTO. I was disappointed with the movie not featuring Alfred a little more and would like for the loyal butler and companion to be featured in this as well. That was my only critique.
